Chapter 4// You Don't Know Me
At 6:45 a.m. the miniature alarm clock began blaring its usual wake-up call, but was drowned by the even louder snoring coming from my 40 year old dad.
Somebody shook me awake, while they yelled, "Get up!"
I replied by groaning and rolling over to the unslept part of my bed. As I blinked, my slanted, blue eyes began to water. I lazily dragged my body out of bed to begin preparing myself for school.
I carried myself across the dimly lit hall towards the bathroom. As I flicked on the light switch, I first noticed the enormous untamable thing which is also known as my hair.
I rapidly pressed down the comb on to my brown and wavy hair trying to get it to look normal.
As I stood in front of the mirror staring back a his own reflection, I grabbed my toothbrush and began to a white and sparkling perfection.
I honestly could not care less of my appearance, as I reached for my tattered skater shoes. It was as if an elephant had trampled on them and they had somehow survived. As I pulled on my loose-fitting black T-Shirt and torn up jeans, I began mumbling a few words of prayer.
I prayed that one day my dad would stop being the idiot he is today and quit drinking. He knows it's not going to be help him in any way, it's not going to solve his problems for him, but why he does it anyway, I will never know.
I just hope he'll come back to his senses one day.
A simple glance at the clock and I began to quicken my pace.
The clock read 7:20 and anytime soon I know that my dad would wake up and start yelling for everyone to start leave.
I don't even know who he's on about when he says 'everyone'. I mean apart from him, I am the only person who lives in the house. I think he just misses Mom. I do too, all the time. But I don't go swallow my pain and grief by turning into a alcoholic, do I?
It's like sometimes he forgets that he's supposed to be the adult and not me.
I pulled on my black Nike backpack, heavy with all of the new books, and heaved myself out of the door; right after picking up an apple and a pack of crisps for school.
Not wanting to be late for school, I walked fast.
Arriving at school, I stepped inside the halls that were black and white. The whole building sends a chill down my spine and reminds me of something out of my nightmares.
I really do not want to be here.
I mean, life at home is already pretty bad, but school- that just makes it even worse.
Unfortunately I know that I have to be here. I need good education so that I can get a proper job, working in McDonalds and at Debenhams do not count as proper jobs. I mean, the salary is so low and I know I can't keep relying on dad who keeps wasting his, sorry I mean my money on stupid, worthless things. Like alcohol.
Hesitantly I walk up to the door with the small twenty-one nailed above it, checking the paper in my hand as I do. Although I've been in this school for almost a year now, I still have trouble getting to the right classes sometimes. I slowly open the door, which lets out a tired old groan as the hinges protest.
Laughter sounds along the class, joined with excited conversations and shouts. There are some model worthy girls perch on the tables like exotic birds gossiping and giggling, a football fly's above their heads between two jocks in varsity jackets parading their toned muscles.
How the hell did they get a football in here?
Groups of high schoolers sit around the room laughing and causing all kinds of chaos.
All except one person that is sitting silently staring at his desk. How he manages to ignore all this noise, I seriously do not know.
I decided that he was actually the only sane person, as well as me, in the class, so I went and took a seat next to him.
"Hey"
He gave me a confused look and then looked back at his desk.
Ok then. Rude much?
But I didn't mind though. I'm usually the one who's ignored by everyone.
You know in every book there's always that nerd who everyone ignores and doesn't care about. The one who has no friends and is hated by everyone for no real reason, yeah?
That's me.
"Ok then just ignore me"
The boy looked at me again and soon he made a face, you know the one you make when you've just realised something.
"Y-you're talking to me?" He asked.
"No I'm talking to that guy in China" I rolled my eyes. "Of course I'm talking to you"
"Oh, sorry. It's just that no one ever speaks to me" He apologised.
I feel you man.
"Are you new or something?"
"Yeah my mum and I just moved here" He said then looked away. He sounded sad when he mentioned his mother. I ignored the fact that he didn't mention his dad and nodded politely.
He's probably got some family issues, I mean who doesn't? No family's ever perfect.
Luckily the teacher came in a few minutes later, saving me from the awkward silence I was having with the boy. I should probably ask for his name sometime, but he'd probably just start ignoring me by tomorrow, just like everyone else.
But I don't care, to be honest. I like living the alone, single life.
I don't have to worry about anyone.
"You have till the end of this lesson to complete these equations, if you finish before, raise your hand and I will come and collect them. And if any of you get stuck, well you're on your own. You are all over sixteen now and should be able to solve these independently. If you are not able to do this, then I strongly recommend you go back to Elementary School and learn how to do maths"
Wow. This teacher is savage.
She gave the sheet out to everyone and returned to her desk.
I looked at the paper once and nearly died.
Nah, I'm just kidding. It was all really easy stuff. I'm sure everyone in this class could do all the questions in under a minute.
Q1. 3(x+4) + 2(x-3)
Q2. 5(2x+3) + 3(x-2)
Q3. 4(2x+6) + 3(4x-5)
Q4. 6(5x+9) - 2(10x-1)
I was halfway through question 3 when I heard one of the popular girls shout "This is so hard" What the hell is wrong with her? How can she not understand this? Then Kyle, who is also popular answers with "Shut up. This is easy" And then they start arguing.
For goodness sake. They're sixteen not six.
"Well then Kyle, if it's so easy, why don't you show me how to do it"
"Fine I will. See the numbers in the brackets, you just have to take them away from the numbers outside the brackets" What the actual hell. Is this guy for real?
"But for number one, x is inside the bracket" She whines.
"So just go on to the next number then, innit?"
"So 4 then?"
"Yes" By now he sounded really frustrated.
"Actually that's not how you do it" The teacher shouted from her desk.
Thank you, at least there's one sane person in this room.
"Sky, could you please come up and show how to do it on the board"
Ugh. FML.
I faked a smile and nodded then made my way towards the whiteboard. Once I had done the question the right way, the teacher congratulated me is then I went back to my seat.
As soon as I sat down, Allison (the popular girl who has confused) looks good at me and then says "Of course the nerd would know how to do it. I mean, look at her. She has no life, she probably just studies at home all day"
I rolled my eyes and ignored her. But unfortunately it didn't stop there, since she was on the most popular girls in the school, everyone agreed with her. They all started giving their own opinions and saying mean things. But I didn't care, for I am used to this nonsense.
The end of the day couldn't come quicker. As soon as I heard the bell, I ran out of class, before the teacher could dismiss us. Oops. Oh well, who cares.
Once I had reached the house, I chucked my school bag on the floor then got changed into my work clothes. Since work starts straight after school, I didn't have time to have lunch. But that's ok, I'll probably have it when I get home.
"Is that it?" I asked the customer in front of me.
"Well actually, my mothers birthday is coming up soon and I don't really know what to get her. Is there anything you recommend?"
Ok. What the hell am I supposed to say now. I know nothing about gifts for mums.
"I'm sorry, but you should ask someone else. I don't really know about these things" I smiled apologetically.
"Oh that's ok" She shrugged but she looked disappointed. Sorry fam, can't help you there. She handed me a twenty dollar note, muttered a 'keep the change' then walked away.
I shrugged and shouted 'NEXT' and waited for the next customer. Without looking at them, I scanned all the things then placed them together.
"That would be 33.57 dollars in total"
"33.57? I don't have that much"
I looked at the person then got really angry. Once again, I am face to face with Mr.Jerk.
"I don't care, you either pay this much or you could leave"
"Wow. That's so rude. Isn't there any way we could work this out?"
"No. Pay or leave"
I really needed this job and I am not going to let a hot but stupid, idiotic, bipolar idiot take it away from me.
"Fine whatever. I'll just go then"
"Yeah you do that" I don't care that I sounded really mean right now. Like I said, I'm not going to let him get in the way of my job.
"You are so mean"
I rolled my eyes at his childish behaviour and pointed my finger at the direction of the exit, motioning for him to leave.
"Time is money so don't f**k with mine"
"Honestly, you're such a bitch. Why do you only care about yourself? I'm kindly asking you to do me a favour, I promise next time I will pay the rest of the money"
I looked at him then said "Leave"
"Just because you've got the whole world at your feet, doesn't mean everyone else has as well. Ok, not everyone has their mommy and daddy spending their money and spoiling them. Some people, unlike you, actually have to work for everything. We don't just get everything handed to us on a gold plate"
"Please, just hold your tongue, don't say a damn thing"
I hated how he judged me so fast. He doesn't even know me. I hated how he decides for himself that I have a 'mommy and daddy' who spoil me. I hate how judgmental he is. I hate how mean and heartless he is. I hate him.
"Listen here idiot, don't go judging people ok? Just do the whole world a favour and shut that big fat mouth of yours. Don't act like you know me, I am not your homie nor am I person you have known for a long time, so don't act like you know me, ok? If you want to steal, then go ahead. Just don't do it my shop. Go away and take that stupid mouth of yours with you as well" I spat angrily at him.
What I failed to realise was that my boss was standing right behind me and was listening to everything I had said. Unfortunately, he only got here when I started shouting so he doesn't know the full story and I have a feeling this is going to end in a horrible way.
"Sir, before you get angry, just know that he was trying to ste-"
"I don't want any excuses, this is unacceptable behaviour. HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO A CUSTOMER LIKE THIS?"
And by now everyone was watching us,some people even had their phones out and they were filming this.
SMH. People these days.
"But sir, you should know that it was actually his fau-"
"Shut up. Don't speak"
"Sir please-"
And what he said next made my heart drop.
"You're fired"
No it can't be.
I looked at Mr.Jerk once then looked away, I brought my head down because I did not want anyone to see the tears that are threating to spill. I took my apron off and placed it on the counter.
I ran out the shop and that's when the tears fell out. I ran and ran and ran until I reached my favourite place. The park. It was quiet and peaceful, just like it always has been. This park is placed in a scary neighbourhood that no one dares sending their child here. Drug dealers and gangsters live here.
But that doesn't bother me, because once when I was little, a scary man was running after me and I got horrified. So I ran away from him and saw a secret path that nobody, until this day, knows about except from me.
I sat on the old swing and started swinging myself very gently with only one thought on my mind.
I hate him.
