Chapter 6
Since Annie had arrived, she had been attacked by goblins, orcs, vampires and her own Grandmother, who was queen of the vampires. After her first day she had already seen a couple from a neighboring castle get poisoned and a crossbow bolt shot at her. Kaleb, whom Annie had originally believed to be an evil sorcerer, had gained her trust. Once Annie, Kaleb and four other guards left to go orc hunting, Annie had a rare glance at the evils of this new world. The next morning two of the guards had been slaughtered while keeping watch. The remainder of the group set off to hunt the vampire clan, the Nightstalkers, to eliminate them being a problem. Unfortunately, one of the two remaining guards was a spy and called some of Nightstalkers to capture the three and imprison them.
Once Queen Vivi left their cell, Kaleb reached deep inside himself, tapping into his magical reservoir and pulled out enough energy to send a missive to Erik. He was also known as the Longhaired King, king of the werewolves. The tersely worded message he sent was, "King Erik, I was wondering if you could help me out of the Nightstalkers lair. If you could send a war party over to just scare the vampires that would be great. Thank you."
As Sammi and Annie were sitting there, waiting for something to happen, Sammi decided to distract herself pulled out a poetry book from her sea bag. Annie said with an elongated face, "Sammi, sorry for not telling you who my grandma was, but I wasn't supposed to tell anyone. Can we be friends again?" Sammi replied, "Sure. I was a little freaked out after last night's events. Your grandmother's clan killed two of my brothers-in-arms. I'm sorry." Suddenly, Kaleb sighed heavily. Both girls looked to him as he said, "I sent out a message to an old acquaintance of mine. We may be getting out soon." With that, the party settled in for the vigil as they waited.
Seeing that Kaleb wouldn't be saying anything more, Sammi went back to reading the rhymes in her Nisei-like, epic poetry book, which had a wonderful medley and meter to them. It was a very cultivated book of wisdom. Annie was looking at Sammi's throat, which was now showing serious bruising from her earlier, harrowing attack by Zac, the wrathful spy. While Annie was wishing she could help her friend, a strange palled voice interrupted her train of thought. In a rhythmic, mystical tone, it said, "Don't dismay, you have magic in your blood, my dear. If you follow my path, and become one with me, I can teach you how to heal others. Kickstart your magic...."
Annie was quite intrigued by this point and ecstatically said, "Yes!" "Good," the voice said laconically. "My name is Mystique. We start now." Immediately, Annie felt as if she were trying to breathe underwater – a glutinous feeling in her lungs. On impulse, she reached out a hand to touch Sammi's throat and felt magic course down her arm and into her fingertips. Her gaze was riveted as she slowly healed her friend's bruises. Sammi's breathing became easier and she looked up in surprise, and indignantly asked, "How?" That was the only word she was able to speak.
Kaleb suddenly looked up and said, "We need to go. Our diversion is here. Annie, please take the wolf charm from your necklace and place it under the door." Annie did so, with a questioning look. Suddenly, with an onomatopoeia "BOOM!!" the sound of the door belaboring and splintering apart, a magical, silver haired wolf stood where the strong oak door had been breached just moments ago. The former prisoners grabbed their gear and made ready to leave Queen Vivi's lair.
