Chapter 2

After the startling encounter with the goblins, Kaleb ushered Annie towards a giant, evil looking castle, that one could only assume was his. Once they passed through the magical barrier surrounding the perimeter, Annie noticed the structure was actually breathtakingly beautiful as it was constructed of pink granite. There was a sort of symmetry about its façade. However, there seemed to be a shadowy mass hovering over one of the wings that seemed dark and out of place.

Much to her surprise, as she walked under the portcullis, Annie saw mops and buckets cleaning the courtyard, with no sign of anyone present. Kaleb saw her look of confusion and told her of the multitude of air spirits he had at his command to perform a substantial amount of services for him. She followed him into the main castle, Annie noticed the lanterns, mounted high on the walls, were equidistant from each other in such a way they did not allow for any shadows to be cast. A slight movement caught her eye. Trying to monitor the lights, she saw the pink walls had copious veins of gold flowing in streams throughout. She thought the lights were actually fairies, but it was hard to judge from their altitude. As they turned a corner in the hall, she could have sworn a partition behind her had shifted.

As Annie is about to question Kaleb as to the extent of the magic in the castle, he chuckled at her confusion. He told her it was difficult to forecast the arrangements the castle made. Occasionally, Castle Clonmel would disproportionately allocate the space needed for the kitchens and public rooms and the Great Hall could dwindle to the size of a broom closet when it was least convenient. But, other than that, he noted, the private rooms were moderate, though with scanty storage space. Suddenly, the quiet of the halls were interrupted by an extremely loud growl from Annie's stomach. They both burst into a fit of laughter.

"Statistics show that if I don't feed you immediately, life could be difficult," Kaleb jokingly told Annie, as he escorted her directly to the Great Hall. When they got to the great hall, she noticed many lords, ladies, and knights were also arriving. Once everyone finished trickling in, the food was whisked onto the table by the helpful air spirits. The table groaned under an entire roasted boar, multiple savory meat pies, at least four turkeys, and many other fabulous dishes. As was standard, Kaleb took his seat at the head of the table, placing Annie at his side, in the place of honor. Knives and forks were wielded appropriately, and the feast was beginning to be decimated. Suddenly, Lord and Lady Delain of Goblinwatch Keep began choking, sputtering, and clawing at their throats.

All of the voices immediately went silent as the other guests stared horrified at the dying couple. "Twang!" Suddenly, a crossbow bolt embedded itself in the chair back only an inch away from Annie's neck. Gauging the angle of the bolt, Kaleb followed the trajectory to the stone balcony on the opposite side of the Great Hall. An orc was silently slipping away into the shifting recesses of the castle.
