7- Saving Spoon

Jamie's POV

They separated Anne and me.

I stare blankly at the wall. The white wall that had paint peeling off of it. I glanced up at the flickering lights, getting irritated.

'Bro, you're so screwed now.'

"Stop telling me that!"

That's all they told me, over and over again that I was somehow "screwed"... I mean I had a plan.

Did I?

I was stuck back in hell but this time, Anne was here. I needed to find her and make sure she was safe from the devil.

Okay here's the plan.

Step 1: I wait until lunch, this way both the male and female wards will be together.

Step 2: Find Anne.

Step 3: Talk to Anne about how we are going to escape- I haven't figured that part out yet- but that's what I was going to do next.

'Ha! of course, you were!'

"I am! Why don't we do it right now?" I challenged them.

They were quiet and I smirked victoriously. Perfect, now it's time for the escape plan.

Alright, so, we were back on a schedule except for this time...I was in solitary confinement... all alone compared to everyone else.

The only time I was able to see anyone was during group or lunch...which is where Anne comes in play. Or so I thought,

Anne and I would sit together and we can talk through all the possible escape routes I've had from the first time I've escaped.

Maybe this time I wouldn't make too much of a commotion.

'Ugh.'

'You better not! If you don't, we might make it out alive.'

"You all worry too much."

A loud banging on the metal door caused me to flinch. I look down at my chained hands trying to avoid any contact.

"Morning Mr. Stock, are you ready to eat?"

Her voice was familiar, the fake tone she always used. You could hear the forced smile all over again.

"Mr. Stock?" She asked.

I ignored her.

She sighed softly and put something aside for me. I glanced down at the metal tray that lay on the bed next to me.

"Today's lunch is meatloaf and rice. Hope you enjoy Mr. Stock."

Wait...I'm not eating with anyone else?

The lunch lady began to leave until I stopped her.

"Wait!"

Her heels stopped clicking and everything became silent. I could sense the smirk she had.

"Yes, Mr. Stock?"

'Tell her!'

'We need to know why!'

'Maybe she will be nice enough to let us eat with them.'

'Your plan is ruined kid, better luck next time.'

Ugh, my plan was not ruined! Maybe if I play nice, she would let me eat with everyone else.

"I-I uh, M-Ms...."

"Call me Jane,"

"Jane," her name rolled off my tongue, "It sucks being alone in here...is there any way I can eat with everyone else?"

Sympathy filled her eyes. Jane blinked quickly and shook her head.

"I'm sorry Mr. Stock but I can not do that."

'Ha!'

I questioned her more, probing for answers.

"I really hate being alone, it's my biggest fear."

She furrowed her eyebrows and walked out the metal door.

"Sorry, Mr. Stock."

The metal door slammed shut and I was once again stuck in the small space.

'Well, your so-called plan is ruined. Now what Jamie?'

I look around the small room, trying to find a way to escape. My eyes soon fell onto something above me. Something impossible.

An air vent.

I stood erect from the bed and went onto the tip of my toes, trying to reach it...but it was no use.

There were screws in it also. Screws that would have prevented me from opening my freedom.

I sat back down on the bed in defeat, grabbing the plate with food on it. The steel spoon glared from the flickering lights.

With a strong amount of force, I stabbed the meatloaf, cutting it into small pieces.

'Violent much?'

'Geez reminds me of a few days ago with that poor family you killed with cold hands.'

I ignore them. My thumb rubbed the edge of the spoon, feeling the sharp yet thin metal.

It seemed like I could taste it...-the metal I mean- that's how bad the meatloaf was here. I had finally gotten used to 'normal' food.

'I have an idea.'

'Keep the spoon.'

'Don't let the spoon go.'

'Finish lunch.'

What were they going on about? What the hell would I need the spoon for?

I licked it clean glancing quickly at the door before shoving it under the bed spring.

The lunch lady showed up again with great force.

"Are you finished with your food, Mr. Stock?"

There was still quite some food left, but I had lost my appetite soon after my first bite.

A quick nod was all I needed. Jane took the tray in her hand and checked on top and under the tray.

"What happened to your spoon?"

'Tell her you never got one.'

'Lie.'

'It's for Anne.'

'Pfft, it's for your freedom!'

For m-my freedom? What the hell is a spoon going to do?

Huh, I guess we will find out.

"I-I never got one."

Jane raised her eyebrow and cleared her throat.

"How did you cut the meatloaf? It seems to have been cut neatly,"

Wow, she was good at this game.

'Yeah, but we're better.'

Hm, let's see if that is true.

"I, Uh used the fork!"

Jane rolled her eyes at my answer and put her hand on the bone of her hip.

It gave me a moment to actually see how she looked.

Her pale skin and scrawny figure are quite...creepy.

"Jamie, there is no fork, tell me the truth."

Shit, she used my first name! I'm really screwed now.

"I didn't get a spoon I promise!" My voice cracked as if I was hitting puberty once again.

Jane looked quite shocked at the squeaking noise I had created.

"Alright, alright. I hope you aren't lying. Dr. Burrell wouldn't like the sound of that,"

Of course, the devil wouldn't, he is meant to hate everything good AND bad.

"I'll see you in a few hours," she added.

In a swift movement and she was gone. I raised a finger to my mouth, biting my nails with anxiety.

Once she was completely out of my sight, they began speaking to me again.

'Alright, Jamie now is your chance!'

'Grab the spoon! And look up!'

What were they planning? What was I planning?

I squinted my eyes and shifted my eyes all over the place until they finally reached the air vent.

The screws shined brightly from the yellow toned lights. I slowly tightened the spoon in my hand and let out a breathless chuckle.

"You guys really are something!"

'We know you are.'

'This is all because we love you, Jamie!'

I could use the spoon to unscrew the vent open. This problem was solved, but another one took it's place.

How was I supposed to climb up it? It was literally in the ceiling-I'm not a tree- so I would not be able to reach it!

I jerked myself off of the bed grabbing the cold and rusted bed posts, dragging the bed so it would be under the vent. Within a couple seconds, I was up on the hard mattress. My arms desperately reached for the vent, successfully grabbing a hold of it.

"I need to get to Anne as soon as possible." I mumbled.

Who knows what they could be doing to her right this second. Hell is ruthless and they won't stop until you wished you were dead. Devil knows how much I love her, and that isn't good.

'Aww,'

'Go save your girl Jamie!'

'Woohoo!'

Don't worry Anne. I'm coming.

The end of the spoon fit well and unscrewed almost immediately. After a few slips here and there, I finally got it open! Yes!

I coughed in my shoulder, waving my hand in front of me, trying to avoid the mounts of piling dust falling. My hands clamped onto the sharp edge as I pulled myself up into the dark and tiny vent.

A loud banging made me hit my head and groan in pain. I could hear the door handle jiggling along with loud yelling,

"JAMIE! OPEN UP!" Jane screamed.

My eyes widened when the creaking of the door opening slammed into the bed. Jane's continuous efforts allowed her to realize what was going on. I had begun crawling through the ducts, feeling sharp edges pierce through parts of my skin.

'Operation Air Vent was a success!'

'Okay, Stock, it's up to you to save Anne.'

'She's waiting for you.'

A dim light rose a few feet away from where I was. My feet pushed forcefully toward it, hoping to see some sort of escape from this...darkness.

I came across another vent opening. A gasp left my cracked lips causing me to quickly cover my mouth. Devil was speaking to Jane, who ranted about the situation.

"Hey! Woah, calm down Jane! Tell me what happened."

He held onto her shoulders pulling her closer. I rolled my eyes, watching everything play out.

"Dr. B-Burrell, I think Jamie escaped," She spoke breathless.

Devil's eyebrows furrowed and he sighed angrily. His nose was flared, ears turning a bright red. My heart started to thud hard in my chest when Jane pushed herself closer to him.

"Doctor?"

"How do you know?" He snapped.

Jane paused for a bit, breathing deeply.

"H-his bed was blocking the door. He may have found a way to leave."

The devil shoved his shoulder into her, rushing quickly out of the room. As soon as they left, I pushed the vent open quietly. I tumbled out of the vent, falling onto a wooden desk with papers stacked everywhere.

A shaky sigh left me while I squeezed my eyes shut. The pads of my feet touched the cement floor-it was very cold by the way- cringing at the feeling.

'Jamie! We are in Devil's office!'

'Leave! NOW!'

Crap. I sprint to the door shoving it open and run.

I don't know where I was running, but hopefully it was away from the Devil's wrath.

The small hallways caused my throat tighten from fear of them swallowing me whole. I turn my head around to see no one following me. A smile reaches my lips at my success of escaping solitary confinement.

I start to slow down, trying to catch my breath. The blaring alarms go off, alerting every damn security guard in hell. My pointer fingers plug themselves into my ears and I try to find some place to hide.

'You better hurry. I can hear them coming.'

'Anne is going to have to wait a little longer.'

'Protect yourself first.'

Protect myself first. There were a few doors near me giving me some sort of hope on escaping. The first door was locked, so was the second one, and the third. Shit. I'm so screwed.

'That's what we've been telling you!'

"Find him! Make sure he does not leave again!" I heard Devil.

The palm of my hand reached for the last door, pushing and pulling on the handle, hoping that it would somehow budge open. I ram my shoulder into the door a couple times causing the old wooden door to open magically.

I close the door slightly before turning to see where I was. Tears filled my eyes to the brim as I choked on my spit a tiny bit.

So. This was the room.

"SIR! This door is open!" A guard yells.

I shift my head seeing multiple shadows.

'Jamie! Hide behind the curtains!'

'No hide in the tub!'

'Are you crazy?!? Hide under the bloody table!'

I dropped down onto my hands and knees crawling away from the door. It opens instantly and I whimper with fear. My body thrusts to the floor, rolling under the table. My knees touch my chest as I hide in a fetal position.

"Come on Jamie! I know you're in here."

'Shh, don't. Say. Anything.'

Sweat dripped down my forehead while goosebumps consume my body. Devil's feet thumped next to my head as he searched the room. He walked to where I hid, halting.

"He's not in here."

'Nice job Jamie!'

'Now, wait for Devil to leave, and let's find Anne.'

I nod slowly, wiping my dripping eyes.
