3- Being Known

-2 months later-

"Bye have a good one!" The bell rang from the coffee shop, another customer leaving.

'Nice job today Jamie, you didn't mess up this time.'

I rolled my eyes and wiped my sweaty hands on the apron. Alan walked up next to me and patted my back with a slight smile.

"Good job today bud! Mind closing up tonight?" Of course, he needed me to close up. It just meant a couple hours less with Anne.

This past couple of months, she has been absolutely amazing and her beauty seemed to increase every day.

The thought of her made me feel all tingly inside, it makes my heart flutter and drops to the pit of my stomach.

I grabbed the rag off the counter, making my way to one of the many now empty tables, wiping off the leftover crumbs that seemed to cover the top.

The shining water glistened as it hit the tables and the wet ragged swept swiftly against the wood. The feeling was satisfying. It was like I was cleaning all the bad from the good.

'Sounds like you talking about yourself Jamie.'

I continued to wipe the tables, humming a tune quietly. Alan gave me a small wave goodbye before slamming the fragile door on his way out.

Alone again. I decided to turn on the small television that hung from the ceiling wanting to watch all the terrible things happening in the world. The small remote fits nicely in the palm of my sweaty hand as I clicked the big red button. A woman's voice began to speak loudly in the echoing shop.

'Turn the volume down Jamie!'

'My goodness, you can't do anything right.'

My heart pounded and my body shook as I tried to turn the volume down. I clicked the small arrow that pointed downward. The T.V. channel flipped to another, then another... and another. I stared down at the remote and found a couple more arrows, finally turning the volume down to a reasonable setting.

I glanced up and saw a photo of myself as a man pointed to the left. His voice sounded so scared, so deep.

"Patient James Stock escaped the Martha Illness Rehabilitation Institution two months ago and is still on the run. Police say he is here in New York, hiding away and made a new identity to avoid any contact with anyone except a few folks. Was there manipulation used? Find out tonight on NYC news."

My vision blurred with tears as fear entered my body. I shook when lightning struck outside and soon the lights went out. I whimpered and dropped the remote afraid. The batteries falling out of it and sliding under a couple booths.

A loud knock on the glass door made my head jolt back. I backed away as I saw him standing there, The Devil himself. A gasp left my chapped lips and I sprinted to the back door while Devil broke down the glass door and ran in the shop.

'Jamie RUN!'

'Come on Jamie, just give it up. Go home.'

'Don't give up! Go get Anne, keep her safe! What if they found her!?'

No. Not Anne. Don't worry, I'm coming.

My rubbish shoes squeaked loudly in the rain as I sprinted back home.

My breath was heavy and was seen, white clouds leaving my mouth. I was drenched. After a few more minutes of running, I made it to the stained door or our old home. My hand slammed onto the door, knocking quickly as I prayed for Anne to open the door.

Locks clicked and her toffee skin shone brightly from the moonlight. I stared into her curious eyes as she glared into my bright red, and tear-filled ones. Without thinking I pulled her into a warm embrace and kissed her.

'DAMN IT JAMIE! YOU DON'T FOLLOW RULES AT ALL!'

'Oh calm down, let him express his love.'

'He really loves her.'

I pulled my lips away from her and noticed her shocked state.

"We need to leave. Now." My hand grasped into hers and I pulled her out of the door. She forced her herself to stop and she let go of my hand.

"Jamie! What was that? What is going on, did something happen at the coffee shop?"

"Anne, we need to go. D-Devil, he found me. If we do not leave right now, I can get hurt and so can you. I need to keep you safe. I-I love you." She raised her hands and closed her eyes as she tried to process everything that was happening.

"Wait...what?"

"Long time no see Jamie!" I turned my head to see Devil making his way to us.

"Okay Anne, I'm serious. We really have to go." My voice was shaky while I spoke. I gripped her waist and carried her bridal style, running away from Devil.

"JAMIE! PUT ME DOWN!" Her fists hit my chest, small grunts leaving my mouth.

"I-I can't Anne, p-please just trust me," I spoke out of breath. She huffed out some air and crossed her arms around her chest, keeping quiet. A bright light blinded me and I slipped. A loud thud was sounded and annoying barks of multiple dogs.

"We've got you now!" My eyes squinted open and I dragged Anne away from all of the harm. The blaring freight train flashed its lights near us, and that is where we both ran.

"JAMIE WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?!" Anne screamed through all of the chaos.

We made it near a boxcar and I shoved Anne inside of it. The train began moving and I couldn't catch up to it.

I sprinted as fast as I could and got a good grip onto the handle. My feet and legs were getting cut as the train dragged me, ripping the pants I was wearing.

"OW!"

"JAMIE HOLD ON!" Anne left and was soon hidden in the dark boxcar.

'You're going to die Jamie.'

'Goodbye...Jamie."

'We love you.'

"NO NO DON'T LEAVE ME!" Anne showed her beautiful face once more, a rope in her hand. She tied and knot and threw it toward me. I quickly clung on and with a struggle, Anne pulled me up.

My bleeding legs traced behind me as I dragged my own body next to her, holding onto her as if she was going to disappear.

"P-Please don't let me go! Don't let Devil g-get me!" Anne sat stiff and kept her arms wrapped around me.

"Shh, Jamie. You're losing to much blood. H-hold on I need to wrap your wounds." I started to blink very slowly and my grip on her loosened.

"Help me." My vision was now starting to getting very fuzzy, black dots surrounding everything. Anne's muffled voice was the last thing I heard before going into a deep sleep.

"Jamie! Stay awake!"

The darkness took over.

*****

A cold splash of water caused a gasp to leave my mouth and my eyes nearly popped out of my head. A gnarly cough left my lungs and I started to panic, looking at the green trees surrounding me.

"A-Anne?" My head turned from left to right, looking for her. I wiped my nose, smelling the soil that stuck on my hands. She was nowhere and I was alone.

"Anne?" I questioned once again. I groaned as a large amount of weight tackled me to the ground.

"Jamie! Oh my goodness, you're okay!" She squished my cheeks and connected our lips, letting them linger for quite a while. She pulled apart and I felt myself turning bright red. Anne also blushed and became red like a tomato.

She scratched the back of her neck and avoided my eyes.

"I'm sorry, I was just worried." I breathed out a laugh and pecked her cheek.

'She likes you too!'

'Score!'

"Don't be."

Her body cuddled into mine and she questioned everything that happened.

"Jamie now is the time to tell me what to freak is going on."

'She's right.'

'It's now or never bud.'

"Anne. I'm a b-bad p-p-person, I did something b-bad. Please d-don't leave me alone after what I tell you."

Anne kept quiet.

I continued.

"I-I escaped Hell and now The Devil is after me. He has all the bad people after me so they can all kill me. W-what they did in Hell was very inhumane. They would e-experiment on us and use us to find a new way to figure out medicines and increasing life spans. They even tried to find ways to clone us!"

"Jamie-"

"You have to believe me!"

Her eyes switched from one of my eyes to the other.

'She's not going to believe you.'

'Idiot.'

"Yes, she will," I mumbled. Anne stood up and wiped her pajamas from the leaves and dirt that seemed to stick onto her.

"Y-you don't believe me?" She lends me a hand and helped me up, wrapping her arms around my torso. Her small figure kept me warm from the cool breezes that passed by.

"I...believe you." I sighed in relief and hugged her.

"Thank you. We need to find a place to stay, a place to hide from Devil and his D-demons!" Anne agreed and raised her wrist to use as a sunblock, allowing her to see our surroundings more clearly.

Our hands intertwined and we started pacing deeper into a forest. Crickets chirping and real-life bunnies running. I watched everything in awe.

Anne giggled and swung our arms slightly back and forth.

'She really is beautiful.'

'She seems to like breaking her own rules also. I think she's falling in love with you Jamie.'

"I think so too."

"What?"

"N-nothing."

"Jamie?" Oh no. Did I do something bad? Did she find out that we aren't alone?

"Y-yes?" We stopped walking.

"Don't worry, I'm going to take you someplace safe. We are going to do this together. We are going to find a place where there is no Devil and no Hell. Instead, there will be God and Heaven with Angels and good people. I promise."

Heaven. Oh, how I dreamed of living there. The bright lights came from the sun and moon instead of all of the medical equipment or ceiling fans. There would be no Devil, just God. God who will love me a-and help me.

"Okay," I whispered. Anne grinned and we started walking once again.

'Heaven doesn't seem so bad.'

'Jamie there is no way you are getting into Heaven if that's what you're thinking'

I rolled my eyes and ignored them. Of course, I am getting in.

"Oh shit! Jamie get down!" I fell to my knees, cowering away from the others.

"Ruthie, did you hear that?" The little girl turned her tiny body to us and pointed with fear.

"Papa! Papa, there is someone here!" The bulky man made his way to us and within a second Anne and I were separated. He held her by the collar but immediately put her down realizing she was an innocent woman.

"Who are you and what are you doing here?" The man's voice was deep, it sent shivers down my spine just hearing it.

"We're lost! Please, you have to help us!" I stood behind Anne, resting a hand on her waist.

"P-please," I spoke quietly. The man checked us out, looking for any weapons or illegal stuff. He cleared his throat and motioned his daughter to come near him before kneeling down next to her.

"Ruthie, go home and tell Mama that we have some guests coming over. I'll be home in a second." The little girl left and the man folded his arms.

"Come." Anne followed in an instant while I stayed behind for a moment. She noticed I was not behind her and stopped.

"Jamie, Come on."

'Listen to her.'

'She is literally the only reason why you are alive.'

I scoffed at that comment. That wasn't true.

Okay fine, that was partially true. We began our journey to the man's house. The entire area was fenced off and only a small gate allowed entrance to the entire place.

"Beautiful farm," Anne commented.

The man grumbled in response.

This is going to be good.
