2- To The Shelter

"Alan! Did you see that!?" I was falling for her every time my mind wandered. I sighed dreamily, my legs feeling all jittery.

It was quiet for a moment.

"Jamie, I think it's time for you to get to the shelter." The mood shifted quickly as Alan said it straightforward.

'Good for nothing piece of shit.'

'You really aren't worth it.'

'Hope you come to realize you are pretty useless.'

"No no no shut up. I am good enough. What about Anne? S-she she liked me!" I pressed my fingers to my temples, pushing hard.

"Jamie? What are you talking about?'

'Nah, she just used you, she felt bad for you.'

'I'm sure she never wants to see you again.'

"No that's not true. She said she would meet me again. Anne isn't like that, I-I can feel it."

"Jamie, bud. I can hardly keep myself on my feet. I did what I could but now it's time for you to head to the shelter." I kept quiet, listening to his lecture.

I really thought Alan was my best friend. That he was finally someone who could understand me.

'Idiot! No one understands you!'

That's wrong. Anne understands me. I'm gonna find her, and, and prove everyone wrong. I will go to that shelter.

I sprinted to the door hearing Alan calling out to me. My shoulder slammed into the glass door, busting it open with strong force. Raindrops fell out of my eyes, I wiped them off quickly, running away from Alan.

"Jamie! Please! I'm sorry!"

'We can trust him no more. He is a traitor, just like the devil.'

The sun soon disappeared and the moon shone brightly. I continued to jog through the heavy crowd, trying to find this stupid 'shelter'. I saw a sweet woman with a child in her arms, cooing lightly.

"E-excuse me?" She looked up and her face dropped in an instant.

"Sorry I don't have change." She replied. I tried to reach out to her, begging for her assistance.

"Please! I-I don't know where the shelter is, or what it is!"

"Don't touch me!" She shoved me and walked away. I tried to find someone else who would help me, failing miserably.

"Excuse me? I-I need to find the shelter do you-"

"F*ck off." The man spoke shoving a shoulder into mine, walking the same direction as the woman.

'Just give up Jamie. Go back to the devil.'

'At least you had a place to stay, now you're a homeless bum.'

"No, I will find it. I can do this." I choked on my spit trying to prevent any more tears to run down my already damped and puffy cheeks.

"Ow!" I looked down to see my foot bleeding a tiny bit. A rough boot stomped on it, then another... and another.

My foot slid closer to my other leg, rubbing the top of it with my calf. The friction caused the pain the increase and I gasped at the sudden reaction.

I limped with the crowd as the rush hour had just started to begin. My shoulder became sore and my leg was starting to swell.

"Need a hand?" I turned around and saw the gorgeous beauty stare into my glossy eyes. Anne grabbed my hand without my consent, which I didn't mind, and pulled me away from the harsh crowd.

"Folks can be mean around here..." I kept quiet. Her warm hand made me forget about all the pain I had just been put through.

'You're lucky she showed up when she did.'

That was very true. As I began limping and following Anne, she stopped for a moment and stared into my eyes sadness engulfing them.

"What's wrong?" My heart hurt seeing her sad. Without thinking I put my hand on her cheek. She ignored me and started to pull me further away from everyone. I gulped loudly thinking I had done something wrong.

"Jamie, I only left for five minutes. What happened?" What did happen? I seemed to had forgotten everything once her angelic voice began speaking to me. I couldn't find the right words to answer her question.

'Tell her you got lost.'

'She can help you get to this stupid shelter, Jamie!'

"I-I need to get to a thing, a place called the shelter? Do you know w-what it is by any chance?" She let out a scoff and rolled her eyes.

"There is no way I am letting you stay at the shelter. Why don't you come back to my place? I'm sure you've had a pretty long day." I felt my breath hitch in my throat. Anne just asked me to go with her, to be with her at her...place.

'Idiot! Say yes!'

'You can finally prove everyone wrong!'

I nodded quickly and grasped her hand in mine once again.

"Th-that would be nice. Thank you." She gave me a toothless smile before walking with my hand in her hand back to her home.

*****

"Make yourself at home! Let me check if I have any clothes from an ex-boyfriend or something lying around." Anne threw some sort of metal chain on the wooden table, leaving me all alone.

Her home was small, really small. It seemed to remind me of hell's rooms, the ones we would have to share with each other. The floorboards creaked as I started to move forward to the small chair in the corner of the room. My leg was numb from the pain with every step I took, causing me to limp.

'Are you sure we can trust her?'

'What if she is just like Devil?'

No way!

"Nope, she's different...I can feel it." I rubbed my hands together trying to warm myself up a bit more. My bum soon met the wooden chair and I sat stiff, waiting patiently for Anne to come back.

A couple minutes later, she showed up. A large shirt was in her hands along with some sort of baggy pants.

"Sorry Jamie, I know this isn't making much of a fashion statement but a hoodie and sweats will have to do. They were Max's." I tilted my head with confusion and grabbed the clothes away from her.

I stood up and released the strings from the gown, causing it to fall onto the ground. Anne screamed and covered her eyes, turning her body away from me.

"JAMIE! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!" I flinched harshly at her tone, standing bare in front of her.

'Put some clothes on you idiot!'

'Dude you are such a pervert!'

My legs slid into the soft fabric that I have never felt before, and right after so did my entire upper body. Anne turned her head a little to the side, peaking from between her fingers.

"What the HELL was that Jamie?" My head dropped down in shame, still confused as to what it was that I had done wrong.

"What?" She tugged the sleeve of my new 'hoodie' and pushed me lightly onto the soft couch. Anne put a hand on her hip while most of her weight was on one leg.

"Listen, Jamie, I've only ever met you tonight. It's very rare for me to help out strangers, but I have a feeling we are going to get to know each other pretty well, but you CANNOT take your clothes off in front of me! If I am going to help you, we need to set some ground rules."

Huh, rules. I never liked them, yet they still seem to come my way. My heart pounded once she said those words, I felt as if I was in hell all over again.

"Rule number one," She raised her finger, puckering her lips for a second. "You need to speak to me! If you have a question ask away! I won't be able to get to know you if you don't talk."

I understood that rule. How was I supposed to have Anne like me if she knew nothing about me? The poor lady is letting me stay at her place. Anne put another finger up, making two fingers clear in sight this time. I sighed lowly, hoping the rule would be more...simple.

"Rule number two. If you are planning on staying here for a while, we have to figure out a way you can find a job. Maybe tomorrow we can apply to some places."

Why was she being so nice? Again, she did say we've only met a little while ago. I nodded to everything she said, resting my back more into her couch.

'You really love her'

'Jamie, falling in Love this quick isn't good!'

I shook my head and waved my hands in front of me.

"No, no it's not that!" I denied any part of me being in love with her, it had only been a couple hours.

"What?" Anne questioned.

"Nothing." She gave me a weird look before continuing her lecture. I saw her face become red as a blush rose to her cheeks. She fiddled with her fingers and licked her lips, my mouth opened in awe, watching her intently.

"Rule number 3...N-no no falling in love." I literally heard my heart drop onto the floor and shatter. My head begun to hurt as many thoughts started to roam my head.

Did she know that I was in love with her?

'So you admit it! You do love her!'

'Ha! what a stupid thought Jamie, you don't know what love is.'

They were right. I don't know what love is, how do I know what it feels like? The only love I felt was from the devil and even he was hard to love back. I stared in Anne's dark chocolate eyes, seeing guilt and sadness in them, the same way Alan's eyes were.

"Okay." The word left my lips so easily, so smooth. I stood up from the couch and walked past Anne, heading outside. The cold air nipped at some of my excess skin, causing goosebumps to grow. I looked out into the city, watching lights flashing once in a while.

Anne. She was just all that I could think about.

I heard the door slam from behind me, causing my head to turn quickly. Anne walked out with a throw blanket wrapped around her, she wrapped me in the blanket with her and looked up to stare at me.

"You okay?" I gave her a quick nod and continued to stare at the busy city.

"How about we go back to that coffee shop tomorrow morning and apply you there? I'm sure the manager won't mind. He seemed to like you." Alan didn't like me. He just used me for the night, to get to know me and make me weak. For all I know, he was probably working for the devil.

'Finally making some sense Jamie!'

'Spend the night here but then we gotta move on. Don't forget, we still aren't safe.'

'He's right Jamie if we stay...Anne could get in trouble.'

I gulped down all of my fear, thinking of ways to prevent Anne to become involved. A car pulled up in front of her house, and I backed up slightly grabbing a hold of Anne's hand.

The black Subaru was definitely suspicious. It was Devil.

"Jamie, what's wrong?"

"W-we need to get inside now! lock all your doors and windows!" I opened the door and shoved Anne inside, slamming the door behind both of us. The lock clicked between my fingers and I released the breath that was held in my throat.

"What was that?!?" Her loud voice caused me to cower a tiny bit. I went to the window and ushered Anne to come and follow me.

'Jamie, you need to tell her what is going on!'

'Don't do it dumbass!'

"Anne, you see that c-car out there?" I pointed to the car outside parked by the curb. She cleared her throat and crossed her arms.

"What about it?"

Alright, Jamie, it's time to tell her what is happening.

"That's the devil, he is trying to find me! I ran away and escaped from hell and he is trying to kill me. T-the police are also trying to find me!" She stared at me blankly before busting out a loud laugh.

I gave her a look of confusion.

"What?" I questioned. Anne held her stomach as she tried to calm down from her beautiful laugh, she wiped a tear from her eye and pointed to the car alongside me.

"That's my neighbor Kathy."
