10- The End of the Road
Jamie's POV
The Chapel was very quiet. I looked down at Anne watching her sleep under the pew I was seated on. Her hands were covered with my blood.
I sit up a bit off of the pew, groaning in pain as more pressure was put onto my stab wound...which I knew was going to become infected if it stayed like this any longer. My arm hovers over my stomach and I stand up after countless efforts.
"We really need to get you out of here,"
A grunt leaves my lips and I shift my head quickly to Anne in shock. She stands up without hesitation, rushing to me.
Her hand is placed softly on my wound and she grabs my arm, resting it over her shoulders.
Anne limps to the large doors, opening them.
'Devil is out there!'
'Go outside!'
'No don't!'
I looked both ways to see nothing but a few lights flickering in the plain hallway of hell. Anne pushes herself out of the Chapel then drags me with her.
"Jamie, where is the nearest exit?"
Nearest exit? There was no way we would be able to just walk out of here!
"Anne, it is impossible to leave with just the nearest exit! Devil probably there already!"
'How do you know?'
'Jamie, she is doing the right thing!'
'Idiot,'
"Well, we best try. You are bleeding out and staying here will do us no good Jamie."
I sighed and looked down at my wet shirt watching the blood stain spread more and more. I look up and see black dots taking over my vision, everything was getting spotty. It might be from the amount of blood loss.
"O-okay, we have to hurry because I am losing sight of everything."
Anne starts to jog a tiny bit trying to pick up the pace and I could tell it was taking a toll on her too. She soon sees a green exit sign glowing above our heads indicating that we were near.
"There it is!"
'She's good.'
'We can do this!'
'Devil will just catch you again,'
'Will you ever learn when to stop?'
"No, I don't w-want to stop! This is my-our moment to get to heaven and you are not taking that away from me!"
"Jamie! What the heck are you talking about?"
"N-nothing!"
"You're losing so much blood you aren't even speaking right," Anne whispers in my ear.
I coughed and gagged on my own blood that had the taste of pennies. The sour metallic taste caused me to gag even more and puke all over Anne. She gave me a look of disgust but ignored it as much as she could.
"I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean it!"
'Can you stop humiliating yourself?!'
'Keep this up and Anne is leaving your ass.'
'No! Keep going! You are so close to heaven!'
Anne tripped over her feet and fell onto the ground. I tumble on top of her while having a hard time getting up. Anne shoves me off of her frail body.
I groan at the stinging sensation that was occurring on my wound. Anne stood up as quickly as possible and dragged me slowly across the floor. I watched as I left a trail of blood on the floor and it smeared all over the place.
"I have you, you're okay! I promise I have you! You are going to be just fine!" Anne screeched.
She continues dragging me out of hell while screaming in anger at everything. I coughed up more of my blood which seemed to fill up my lungs. Anne stops for a moment trying to catch her breath. At this point, I knew I had to get up and help her.
I let my hand out which she grabbed onto right away as she pulled me up with every drop of strength she had left in her. Anne kissed my stained cheek and continued to help me, she slammed the door open and ran outside with me.
'Jamie! You did it!'
'I can not believe this is really happening!'
'Jamie.'
'Jamie!'
"Jamie!" Anne screams with utter shock.
"A-Anne, y-you have to l-leave me here!" I scream back.
She shook her head no and tears were running down her face. The grey skies rumbled with anger and I knew that it was about to rain soon. I felt tiny raindrops trickle their way onto my skin leaving wet patches all over my body.
"Hey! Stop them!"
I watched as more guards chased us away from hell. Anne picked up the pace and made her way to some sort of vehicle. She tried to open it but the doors were locked.
"Jamie, rest on the side one second."
A moan left my cracked lips as I rested most of my weight on the black van. Anne holds one of her forearms and lines the car window with her elbow before banging on it with such force. She takes a few steps back from her pain but quickly goes back in the same stance.
"Anne! D-don't hurt yourself!" I screeched.
She ignores me and elbows the van window again and this time it shattered all over the place. I felt some shards go onto my feet and leave small cuts but I could care less at this point.
Anne unlocked the door and shoved me inside the car before climbing over me into the driver's seat.
"Get him, I'll take the other side!" One guard yelled.
'Yes! No keys! Just click that button and it will turn on!'
'Tell Anne!'
"A-Anne just click the button. C-click the button."
"What button?" She shuttered.
I lean forward and lightly push the button before forcing my way back onto the seat. Anne quickly pushes the gas and drives away.
We continued to drive away and I stared in the side mirror watching our car being chased by three others.
"Where do I go?!" Anne screamed while pushing harder on the gas pedal.
There was only one person I knew who would be able to help us. Alan.
He was my best friend and it had been so long since I had seen him. He must have been worried about my well-being.
"A-Alan. Go to the coffee shop."
Anne nodded and continued to drive to the coffee shop. It was only a few minutes away from hell and with the speed Anne was driving at we would probably make it there sooner. The window next to Anne shattered along with the front window. They were shooting at us.
I cover my head with my hands and hover over my stab wound, causing more blood to gush out. Anne swerves the wheel and crashes the car into a few trees. I fly out of my seat and out of the car, dropping onto the cement road.
"JAMIE!" Anne screams.
She jumps out of the car and helps me up as we continue to the coffee shop. It was so close.
'Almost there, Jamie!'
'Just a few more feet!'
I felt something pierce my skin and I gasp in shock. The same feeling came back again, and again. My ears were ringing and I fell to the ground.
I was shot.
Alan ran out of his coffee shop to see the commotion that was occurring. I slowly raise my head up and watch Anne next to me laying lifeless as a bullet hole was engraved between her eyes.
"No. No no no no no! Anne!"
I threw up and coughed up more of my insides as I sobbed for her. My eyes met Alan's as he tried to help me out. There was a crowd forming all around me as police sirens were being heard.
"A-Alan help her! Somebody help my Anne please!!!" I begged.
Alan looks at me sadly and I watched as tears rushed out of his eyes. His shaky hand wipes them off and he stares at me.
"Jamie, there is no one bud. There is no Anne."
What?
I look back to where Anne was and he was right. There was no one there. Where did she go?
"W-where did she go?"
"She was never real Jamie. She was never here." Alan cried out.
'Don't listen to him! She is real!'
'You really thought she was real?'
'She was just a figure of your imagination haha!'
The guards rush toward me and watch as my whole body slowly became stiff. I saw one of the guards talk in the walkie talkie,
"We got him. Patient Jamie Stock is shot and has been caught."
My vision was slowly becoming blurry and Alan soon became just a blob. I closed my eyes and blinked slower than usual.
I closed my eyes again, except this time they didn't open. All I saw was me. My life was flashing before my eyes and there was no one but...me. There was no Anne.
I was in the coffee shop and it was just Alan and I. There was nothing but a coffee cup in front of me. No Anne.
There I was in the streets of New York waiting for Anne to come and help me into her apartment. She never showed up. I walked into an abandoned building and found a pair of ripped sweats and a stained sweatshirt. I slept on the cold floor. No Anne.
I rushed back to the apartment to get Anne. Instead, I am running on my own to the train. No Anne.
We run into the family. He never touched Anne. He grabbed my hoodie and shoved me in front of Ruthie. I killed them all. Not Anne and me. Only me.
I was all alone in the cave. I had gone outside to find the rock by myself.
I was all alone in the thrift store.
There is was. Hell. I killed Devil and escaped by myself and drove into the town by myself. I ran here myself. I was shot by myself.
There was no Anne. My Anne.
She was fake! She was only a figure of my imagination and I made her up because I was alone. I didn't want to be alone anymore. I-I loved her dark hair, toffee skin, brown eyes. She wasn't real and I fell in love with her.
Everything was all a lie. I wasn't perfect.
"Jamie? Jamie!" I could hear Alan's muffled voice as my life was draining out of my body.
"Hang in there Jamie! I called 911 they are on their way bud!" Alan spoke once again.
'Jamie. You did it.'
'We are so proud of you Stock,'
'Heaven is so close! Anne would have loved it!'
'Shut up! Do not talk about Anne!'
'She never loved us.'
'What do you mean?'
"Why did you shoot him!?!" Alan screamed.
"Sir, I request you to back away before we shoot you too." The guard spoke.
"First, answer me. W-why?"
"Jamie Stock is schizophrenic."
I wasn't perfect at all. I was broken and damaged. The real question was why Devil really wanted...me. Was I really the cure to ageless beauty or was that a lie this whole time? Who knows.
I could see the darkness consuming me and it slowly drained into me. I finally could see it and suddenly I could feel it.
There it was.
I was finally in Heaven.
