Apollo and Daphne

So fun story: the very first course on mythology I ever took was in the sixth grade. And by that, I mean we focused on it for like a week and then did nothing with it ever again. Fun times. Anyways, I was in a mini-play about this story and I got to be Apollo. ...You will soon understand how awkward it was to play Apollo.

So one day, Eros is doing Eros things. I now realize how wildly out of context that is. Anyway, he's making people fall in love with his arrows and shnoz when Apollo shows up. This is basically what happens:

Eros: "Yo! Apollo! Aren't my bow and arrows cool?"

Apollo: "Pfft, yeah. For a baby! My bow and arrows are sooooo much cooler! And I'm the god of archery!"

Eros: "Hey, man. That's not nice."

Apollo: "Oh yeah? What's a baby gonna so about it?"

One major rule of mythology: don't piss off Eros.

Many of the gods fear him because he is a love god and can play with their love life like a fiddle. Apollo is about to find this out the hard way.

Also, I thought that I would make a quick note. Eros is better known by his Roman equivalent, Cupid. I just thought that I'd point that out. It's not really important.

Anyways, Eros is mad at Apollo. Bad stuff is gonna happen. Yay!

So Eros finds this nymph by the name of Daphne who is the daughter of a sea god and gets an idea. He shoots her with a lead arrow so any love she could have for Apollo is gone, and then he shoots Apollo with a golden arrow to make him desire Daphne.

So Apollo starts chasing her around. Daphne wants nothing to with him because of the lead arrow (and I'm pretty sure she wanted to remain a virgin even before all of this even started). So after endless amounts of chasing, Daphne begs to her father for freedom. She doesn't care what he does, just make it so she is never chased by Apollo again.

And naturally, he turns her into a laurel tree. You're going to hear about a lot of stories where someone is turned into a plant, just a heads up.

Apollo is distraught about that. He vows to love Daphne forever and he uses his magical god powers to make her forever youthful. And that's why laurel trees never decay. Also, laurels are used to represent victory so that's pretty cool. And it's also one of Apollo's symbols.

Moral of the story: don't piss off a love god, you will regret it.

You see why I felt so awkward to play that part?! XD Anyways, this was one of the very first Greek Mythology stories I've ever heard, so it was really fun to tell it! Next week, I will be telling the very first story I've ever heard, and I'm sure many of you have heard of it as well. Try and guess what it is. Thank you so much for reading and look forward to the next story!
