Chapter 3~Shadows

When John awoke, he ate some breakfast bars, then he went back to the woods.

"Anna?" he called out a few times before giving up.

He took down his tent, packed everything up, took one final glance back at the tree line, then continued his hike. He heard a cough. He turned around to find no one in sight.

A couple of times, he could've sworn there was a shadow or something behind him, but his mind must of been playing tricks on him. Around 3, John stopped for a short nap. He only took out his sleeping bag and crawled into it. He was soon fast asleep.

A curious face peeked from behind a bush. Anna spied the sleeping John. Deciding she was also tired, she crept towards him. She scaned his face for any telltale signs he was awake. Seeing none, she curled up inside the sleeping bag with John.

Eventually, something tickled John's nose. He looked down, and saw light brown hair. He almost screamed for a second, then he realised it was Anna. So this was the shadow he saw following him. He let out a sigh of relief.

He felt responsible for the girl, considering he found her, and that she had no mum. He pulled a couple of sandwiches out of his bag. He shook the girl awake.

She rubbed her eyes groggily, then took notice that John was there. "Oh, hi."

"Hi. Want a sandwich? " John asked, although he wanted to scream Why did you run?!? You had no idea how worried I was!

She took the sandwich, and stared at him, seeing if this was some cruel joke. Seeing it wasn't, she started to eat the sandwich, but never taking her eyes off of John. John found it sort of unsettling.

"Thank you," Anna said as soon as she finished.

"You aren't going to go running off again, are you?"John asked skeptically.

"No. You're nice. I think I like you."

John had the urge to bundle the little girl up in a hug, but the state of her clothes stopped the urge in its tracks.

"Hey, Anna, do you want to clean up a bit?"

Anna looked down at her filthy clothes. "Yeah."

John took her and a tee shirt down to a nearby stream. She stood, looking at the water, holding John's hand.

"Now what?" she asked, peering up at him.

"Take off your clothes and get in," John replied, "I won't look."

Anna made John sit about 10 feet away, with the shirt over his eyes before she was satisfied. She took off her ratty clothes and stepped in the stream.

"Brr," she shivered, but she got in anyways.

Soon, John felt a tap on his shoulder, and he held up the tee shirt, covering his eyes with his other hand. The shirt was taken from him.

"Ok, I'm done now."

John looked to see a little girl in a tee shirt so big on her, it was like a dress, with dripping hair.

"Much better," he decided.

Anna and John walked back to the camp. Or rather, John walked, and Anna rode piggy back.
