Story Title: My dream of seeing the circus

Hey guys! This was requested by BestIrishTwat quite a while ago so sorry it took so long! Yeah having a 9-5 really does take up all your time 😅 I have missed writing tho ya know.

Since the last time I updated, I turned 19, Halloween happened, Last night in Soho came out and I'm telling you all to watch it now! It's so fucking good oh my god! There's a reason Edgar Wright is my favourite writer and director! I also burnt my thigh whilst making noodles which was definitely really fun and not horrific. Don't worry it was just a superficial burn but fuck did it hurt BAD.

Anyway let's get on with this 😂

Everyone wants to go to the circus as a child. It's supposedly a magical place filled with wonder and excitement but I never got to experience that. I never had the money for such pleasures when I was younger which is why I now find myself approaching a big circus tent as a fully grown adult.

I had some money to spare this month and decided to fulfil my childhood dream whilst the circus was in town. I approached the front and saw the man selling the tickets look down at me with an overly cheerful smile. "One ticket for you then sweetheart?" He pointed his finger to the sign next to him, my eyebrows furrowing slightly when I saw him pointing at the child's price of entry.

I was short. Incredibly short for someone at my age. My face had a young appearance and I was often mistaken for a 12-year-old when I was in fact an adult. My parents were on the shorter side as well so it was no surprise that I didn't grow to be tall but my height was frustrating, to say the least.

I guess it will save me some money.

"Yes mister." I smiled wide and handed him the money for a child ticket. I entered the tent and took my seat, swinging my feet back and forth with slight excitement as the main circus performers came into the middle of the tent. Just as they were about to start with the fire breathing act, an incredibly tall man sat in the seat in front of me, blocking my view. I groaned and tried to peer over him, finding some success but at the loss of my comfort.

I was about to poke the man and ask him to move when something in the air caught my attention. I looked up and my mouth dropped open wide when I saw two short people flying through the air. The trapeze artists! I sat back down and kept my eyes glued to the wonderful sight before me, my childhood self inside me squealing in delight. I was enthralled by their beautiful performance.

I wonder how they got two kids to do that? I could never.

The trapeze show ended and they moved on to the knife throwing. I sighed, feeling annoyed that I once again could not see a thing. Stupid tall people and their tall bodies!  I felt the need for a ciggie grow and eventually stood up to leave the tent. I stepped out into the cold air and looked around for an out of sight place to smoke. I spotted one just around the side of the tent near some other smaller tents and trees. I trudged my way over to that area, took out a cigarette and a box of matches. I lit it and stood there shivering, sucking in the nicotine and blowing it out into the air. I could still hear the cheers and laughter in the tent as I looked up at the dark sky.

"Oi kid. What are you doin out---Wait are you smoking?!" I looked over and saw a blond-haired guy, the same height as me dressed in a circus uniform. I sighed, once again annoyed by being seen as a child. "Look mate I'm an adult I'm just a short arse. I can smoke as much as I--" My voice faded out as I realised who I was talking to.

"Ay wait you're the Trapeze artist! You and that other girl are amazing I couldn't do that!" I complimented him, noting in my mind that he was kinda cute. "Y-You're not a kid?" The guy stuttered and I nodded. "I'm guessing you're just a short arse too judging by the use of 'kid' and the way you speak." I muttered as I took another drag of my cig. He scowled before nodding in defeat. I introduced myself and he muttered out his name. "Peter..."

We stood in silence for a few seconds, myself noticing that he was looking me up and down. I shook my cigarette box at him, asking him if he wanted one in gestures. He shook his head and we were once again stood in silence. He looked back at the tent and from what I could tell, he was considering whether to go back inside.

"You came to watch the show? How come you're out here?" He suddenly asked me, moving so he was stood next to me. "I couldn't see cause some tall guy sat in front of me. In fact, the only act I could see properly was yours and after that, I don't think any of the others could beat that." I let out a short laugh as I threw my cig on the floor, crushing it with my foot. I looked up and saw he was grinning slightly. "Ay well at least you definitely have good taste."

His grin somehow made my own lips curve into a smile. He saw this and quickly turned his face back to the serious one he had when he first came out here. Peter seemed a bit hesitant to say anything else to me yet didn't leave, instead choosing to stare at me from the corner of his eye. I could tell this wasn't going to go anywhere unless I initiated so I plonked myself on the floor and patted the ground next to me. "Come on let's chat! I don't really feel like going back in there. Unless you got things to do?" He gave me a bemused look and turned around to stare at the tent yet again.

"You trying to make me jealous of a tent or what? Plonk your arse down now!" He seemed taken aback by my words but at least it got his eyes off that fuckin tent. He opened his mouth, about to give me a rebuttal but finally gave in and took a seat next to me.

We ended up chatting about ourselves and just enjoying each others company for a while. I found his sarcastic, brash way of speaking both hilarious and kind of cute at the same time, though he was incredibly reluctant to talk about his family, only saying the circus was his family. I didn't pry any further. After all, it wasn't my business.

"Wait so where's your girlfriend? Ya know the one who was trapezing with you?" I asked with a sly smile appearing on my face as he began shaking his head profusely.  "N-NO! SHE AIN'T ME GIRLFRIEND! Fuckin hell she's like a sister to me!"

I laughed out loud at his blushed face. "That's nice to hear."

He calmed himself for a second before he realised what I just said. "Ya what?" I let out a snort again and spoke quickly before he could sputter anymore.

"I was just asking cause if she was, surely she wouldn't have appreciated ya being out here with me instead of with her." I wasn't about to be that one girl who flirted with taken men. No thank you.

"Yeah well she ain't so don't worry bout it!" He grumbled, though that only made my smirk widen.

"I didn't realise you were so eager to be with me." I wiggled my eyebrows and he began to sputter yet again. Clearly, he'd never dealt with flirting before and it was great to watch. I giggled and he stopped trying to explain himself, his face bright red.

"I don't remember the last time I had a conversation like this with a stranger..." Peter muttered with a calm smile on his face. I lifted my hand and placed it on top of his, the warmth from his hand making my heart jump. I'd never really hit it off with someone this well. Peter's hand flinched and his face went bright red though he never made an attempt to move, leaving us to sit like that for a while.

The sound of the crowd suddenly grew closer and they began to filter out of the front. "Damn the show's already over?!" Peter sprung to his feet and I slowly got up as well. We were far enough out of the way so people couldn't see us yet I could tell he probably needed to go. "I guess you need to get back?" I said and he nodded, a slightly disappointed look on his face.

I turned around and started to walk away for a few seconds before turning to look back at his now confused face.

"I'll be back tomorrow. Same time?" He smirked and gave me a short nod.

Hope you enjoyed that! I'd say I'll try and update more but honestly, I'm so busy with other things in my life and until I get myself sorted out so I can fit things like this in my free time away from work, updates will be slow. I hope you all understand.

Until next time bye- Jude
