Warning! This anime is rated mature and has a lot of themes that aren't suitable for young viewers. So if you are a petty eight-year-old reading this, you can skip this chapter. BAI BAI. :)
Rating - 8/10
Summary -
Hyakkaou Private Academy is a school where usually only the rich dwell, (damn those rich people, XD), but the school itself isn't focused on academics or sports. In fact, the only thing the school cares about is your ability to read your opponent, or in other words, your gambling skills. The students play different betting games with each other with real money and those who lose are at the bottom of the hierarchy and are called "housepets" and are treated poorly, while the people on top control everything. The student council is an elite group of students that are at the top, and the control everything at the school.
Ryota Suzui knows about the horrors of being a housepet firsthand, as he's currently Mary Saotome's little doggy. But when Yumeko Jabami, a transfer student with a surprising knack for gambling appears at the school, she starts to prove everyone wrong. One by one, student council members witness and fall to the compulsive gambler Jabami is, and we start to see how far she'll go for just a little bit of excitement.
What I liked -
- The animation, the emotion, EVERYTHING. I especially like how they make Yumeko super scary looking whenever she goes into phycho mode. It's true art.
- THE THEME SONG - Okay, I know I say this for pretty much all of the anime I have reviewed so far, BUT I SWEAR THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT. Honestly, the theme for Kakegurui is jazzy and super catchy. It reminds me of the Cowboy Bebop opening, except this one has more pizzaz. Honestly, just listen to it. It might sound weird the first time you hear it, but after you listen to it a few times, I'm sure you'll love it.
- Listen, I know a lot of people don't like Kakegurui because they say that the gambling is "unrealistic" and that "the gambling has no meaning because it's done by a bunch of rich kids." To be honest, the only reason I actually liked this anime was because of the unrealistic gambling. In most gambling anime, or even novels/ movies that have gambling in them have the same cliche theme - "A poor person is trying to get himself to the top by gambling, but they face many challenges and drawbacks along the way." At this point, people pretty much diss any form of media that isn't "inspiring" or "touching."
Call me weird, but all I really want is a story that isn't all cute and inspiring and is super NOT CLICHE.
What I didn't like -
- Some of the scenes were really predictable, there were no real surprises.
- The main character is pretty much useless.
- They made a live action for it - as you should already know, the anime is ALWAYS better than the live action, (coughcoughDeathNotecoughcough), still, the live action for Kakegurui still keeps the main points intact, even though the acting is not the best. Not really worth the watch.
Note - I've been waiting forever to meet another Kakegurui fan, so if you like the anime, then leave a comment below. If you don't like the anime, I totally understand. Most people I know don't like it, even though it's one of my favorites.
Note -Kakegurui is a fairly new anime, so many people don't know it exists. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure it was adapted into an anime sometime in 2017. Season two is supposed to come out this year, so I'm excited!
Note - This really isn't about Kakegurui, but I just wanted to know if any of you guys are into smuts and yaoi/ yuri stuff. I was planning on adding some lemon fanfic's in this book club, so please tell me what you think! Thanks, Y'all!
