Gentoo Penguin

Pygoscelis Papua

Gentoo penguins lay eggs to reproduce. The female bird deposits to extend the nest, usually a small depression in the ground line of pebbles our grass. Then the female in her mate take turns keeping the clutch warm. One penguin spends 8 to 12 days incubating the eggs while the other goes in search of food. This continues until the eggs hatch, up to 37 days.
This Species is endangered, meaning they are at the risk of going extinct. They live in cold regions like the Antarctic peninsula and sub Antarctic islands especially Falkland islands. When it comes to size they get to around 29 inches tall. The diet includes fish crustaceans and cephalopods. Gentoo penguin chicks look like their parents, except for the white patch above the eye and bright orange beak -features that appear when they become adults. These penguins swim faster than any other bird underwater- up to 18.6 mph.
Like most penguins, little Gentoos are awkward on land. But get them in the water and watch out: these pint-sized Penguins are diving machines! Standing about 30 inches tall and wing only 12 pounds, going to penguins easily dive in the water at speeds of up to 22 miles an hour, this is about the same speed as a bottlenose dolphin. And the impressive stats don't end there. Foraging for food and avoiding predators, Gentoo penguins can dive 655 feet deep as many as 450 times a day, staying underwater for up to seven minutes!
