CHAPTER THREE
Not a single word was spoken. No one dared to open his or her mouth, breaking the silence. Jason wanted to close his eyes, to be focused on her and her only, but she was so beautiful. If he closed his eyes, he wouldn't be able to look at her wonderful cheekbones, her magical eyes and her harmonizing lips. He wanted to remember her like this; not like the younger Alexia he knew.
The younger Alexia was yes, amazingly pretty. However, grown up Alexia was a whole different story. He was lucky to have dated someone like her.
There was one problem; she was crying. Tears were flooding out of her eyes with her head buried into his chest, holding him tight. She'd say 'Don't let me go' a couple of times, but no one but him could hear that. And it broke him. Was she really, really that heartbroken that only seeing him would make her sob?
Jason licked his lips and trailed his fingers along her bare arms, trying to calm her down. His other arm was wrapped around her waist tightly and he wasn't planning on letting her go either.
This was his girl, he had to cheer her up, right?
No, she's not your girl Jason!
He sighed and furrowed his eyebrows, pushing her away gently. "Alexia?" he murmured, ignoring Ryan, Chaz and the random blonde girl they had brought. He only had attention for Alexia. She looked up, her brown eyes big and quite red.
"Yes?" Her voice was shaking.
"We have to talk about this... or something." He wasn't sure himself, because honestly? If there was one thing Jason hated, it would definitely be talking. Yet he felt like Alexia may appreciate it and for her sake he would deal with it.
Maybe he could get her back.
No, Jason.
At least they could be friends again.
"How about tomorrow evening?" She had wiped away her tears and stared at him hopefully, almost making him melt. He nodded hesitantly. "I'm sorry." Alexia whispered, snorting. Her hand touched Jason's chest softly, trying to wipe away all the wetness she had caused.
Her touch was electrifying. His mouth started to gape a little and he immediately put his hand on hers. His breathing stuck in his throat and he shook his head, trying to get all this gay shit over with. He wasn't like this. He doesn't get all emotional because of a girl.
But this isn't just any girl...
Chaz cleared his throat. "Guys, we ordered pizza."
It's like both Jason and Alexia awoke from their trance, turning around to face the others. "I'm not hungry. I'm going to my room. See you guys later." She sent Jason a short, meaningful glance before she walked away fast.
Jason didn't move. She walked away, again. It was always him being left alone, staring at her as she disappeared out of his sight and it was so, so tiring.
Stop being dramatic, Jason.
"Jason? Are you okay?" Ryan's worried voice was loud and utmost annoying.
"No, of course I'm not okay." Jason snapped, turning back into the room. He slammed the door behind him and leaned against it, covering his face with his hands. His stomach twisted and he furrowed his eyebrows, groaning loudly.
He felt like throwing up.
Jason hadn't seen Alexia in years. They used to have the perfect relationship, they were madly in love and they were both devastated when Alexia's father had confessed that they were going to move away. He could still remember how her father had told both of them. His heart clenched at the memory, but this time he didn't push it away and just allowed himself to think back.
"Jason, stop!" Alexia exclaimed, her giggles filling the room. Jason grinned exultant as he ran his hands up her thighs, causing her to stop laughing. She puffed out a hot breath and kept lying on her back, closing her eyes.
He lowered his body and pressed it against hers as he felt warmth radiating off her body. She wrapped her arms around his neck loosely and opened her eyes.
"Stop." She whispered again. Jason licked his lips and slid his hand up to her bum, leaving it there. Slowly bending over, he kissed her neck gently, her hands gripping his hair. "Jesus, I said stop." But she didn't want him to stop.
Someone knocked on the door.
"Ignore it." She breathed, pecking the top of his head as he continued the magic on her neck. He sucked and licked her skin, doing exactly what she wanted him to do. Alexia emitted a soft moan, causing him to growl.
The person behind the door knocked again. "Alexia! Get the hell out, dad wants everyone gathered in the living room. The entire family. Including Jason."
It was the voice of Alexia's brother, Dominic. Jason grunted and sat up straight, trying to get rid of the hands Alexia had tangled into his hair. "Lex, your dad wants us." He murmured, not wanting to stop either.
"No, no, I don't care," she answered quickly, pulling him closer by his neck. Her lips found his and she kissed him fiercely. He kissed back just as eager, but Dominic knocked on the door again and Jason pulled back. "C'mon, Lexi, let's just go."
She pushed his body away annoyed. "Fucker."
Jason chuckled, "We're coming, Dominic!" and started collecting her clothes, throwing them into her direction. Her room was huge, she had a king sized bed, an enormous desk which was supposed to be for school but occupied by dozens of little make-up things, a walk in closet, a couch, a television, she even had her own refrigerator.
Her house was a mansion and although Jason was the only outsider who knew where they got the money from, he was still fascinated every time he would walk in.
"I like that my dad included you. He's starting to like you, you're becoming a part of our family, Jase." Alexia muttered, putting on her skirt. Jason merely shrugged. He knew he'd never be a part of this family and he had accepted that the moment Alexia agreed to be his girlfriend.
"Or it's because I'm already here and he can't just make me wait in your room while he's having a meeting with your entire family."
"Don't be so negative. You know my father is fond of you, he likes that you're treating me well." Alexia frowned and slid on her shirt, eyeing Jason who was standing in front of the door, his back faced at her.
"Your mother hates me."
"My mother hates everyone."
It was silent for a short while. Alexia had enough time to stand up and appear behind Jason, wrapping her arms around his torso. "I don't care about their opinion, Jase. I love you. That's all that matters, right?"
In that moment, Jason was thinking about how Alexia's mother behaved around him. She really did hate him.
"Right, let's go."
He opened the door and disappeared. Alexia sighed and followed him, grabbing his hand the second they reached the stairs. They could already see the living room, which was indeed where the entire family had gathered. The only person that was missing was Alexia, who was squeezing Jason's hand hard in comfort.
Jason felt surprisingly comfortable around basically all of them, though seeing them all together in the same place was intimidating. They all carried themselves with such pride and dignity.
"Thank you, Alexia, for finally joining us. Hello Jason." Alexia's father greeted Jason with a wide smile. Jason grimaced and sent him a small smile back.
"What did you want to talk about?" Alexia pushed herself against Jason and he put a hand on her hip. Her mother scoffed lowly and he immediately pulled his hand back, his cheeks starting to burn.
He felt out of place more than anything. They were all dressed in fancy pants, expensive blouses, exaggerating dresses, golden jewellery, heels, loafers... he was not poor and he liked his clothing but he was obviously the outsider compared to these people.
"I need to confess something, and I can imagine not all of you will like this. But, this is very important for our business and I cannot let this chance slip away. I hope you will all understand." Her father had spoken, the silence enough to cut. His eyes landed on Jason's and he kept looking at him for a short while until he looked away. Jason didn't understand.
"Dad, just spill." Alexia's older sister, Catalina, had said impatiently.
He took a deep breath. "We're moving to Los Angeles. Before you all protest, this is already done and rearranged. We'll leave in a couple of months. Alexia, I understand this is hard for you and your boyfriend, but you have to think about your future. You're going to graduate soon and right now you're our main priority. Damian Albarran lives in LA as well, he's looking forward to meeting you."
It was silent again. Alexia's grip on Jason's hand had softened and this time Jason didn't like that at all. A twisting, empty feeling formed itself in his stomach as he felt a lump in his throat, trying to swallow it. The exuberant interior of the house, the many colours, the outrageous clothing and especially the piercing gazes started to become too much.
Not only was she going to move away, she was going to get married.
He had been involved with this family long enough to know what 'meeting someone' meant. He knew this would happen. Alexia could never be fully his.
Jason took a step back as his gaze started to become straggly. "I need-I'm going to-air," he mumbled, his voice hoarse.
Alexia had been shaking against his side as he turned around, walking away. She immediately started following him, but her mother's voice interrupted her manoeuvre.
"Alexia, don't you dare follow him."
That was the last thing Jason heard before he stepped out of the big house and started walking away from it. Alexia had joined him later on and they were both silent. They were holding hands and she had been crying against his shoulder and that was it. No words were spoken.
"Jason!" Chaz' voice ripped him out of his thoughts. Jason rolled his eyes. "What do you want from me, Chaz?"
Chaz shrugged. "You weren't responding."
It was silent as Jason walked over to his bed and plopped down on it, lying on his back. Closing his eyes again he tried to ignore the unfamiliar aching pain in his chest, thinking about nothing in particular. Yes, he missed Alexia but no, they would never get back together. Sure he loved her, he used to. Things wouldn't work out with her family anyway, he had changed and had tons of girls going after him, she was married..
Oh fuck. She was married. How could he ever look at her without completely freaking out?
"You still want that pizza?" Ryan wondered. "I didn't want it in the first place." Jason shot back rudely, crawling under the sheets. Narrowing his eyes, he turned around and faced the wall. His torso burned effectively, reminding him of how she'd been in his arms. He would've never guessed it would happen again. Never.
-
The next morning, he rolled out of his bed. He hadn't gotten any sleep the night before and he had a head ache, a heart ache and no good mood at all. Chaz wasn't in his bed which meant they were already having breakfast down at the cafeteria. He didn't have anything to attend to just yet and he could've gone back to sleep, but he was so nervous about seeing Alexia so he just took a quick shower.
After finishing everything he left the room and practically ran through the corridors, trying to make it in time to the cafeteria before Alexia would leave. He was guessing she'd be having breakfast together with Ryan and Chaz. Who else could she have breakfast with?
A body bumped into his clumsily and they both almost fell. Jason came to an abrupt halt.
"Watch out, loser." The flaring voice belonged to Summer and his mood dropped seven kilometres into the ground. Pulling up his eyebrow, he crossed his arms in front of his chest and looked at her defiantly.
Her head snapped up after dusting her crazily tight jeans and her arrogant face instantly changed. "Oh! Jason, I didn't know it was you."
"Lose the fucking attitude, Summer."
"Gee, I told you I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention. That aside, damn where is this hot piece of ass going this early? Both our lectures start later today. You seem to be in a hurry. Your hair is still wet! You took a shower without me?" she pouted.
Jason licked his lips and shrugged. Usually he was up for sex any time of the day--late or early. But at this point, he really wasn't feeling it. "Breakfast."
Summer cackled like he said something funny and brushed her hand on his bare arms. He realized that he was in such a hurry that he forgot to put on a jacket while it was snowing outside. God damn, he was going to catch such a cold.
"I need to go, Summer. Scoot."
"Jasie, don't be so.." her eyebrows shot up thoughtfully and she obviously couldn't think of a word. However she recovered herself fast and grabbed his shoulder. "Doesn't matter. You turn me on by only having wet hair, do you mind rubbing some wetness on me too?"
He wasn't in the mood for this. "Summer, get out of the way."
"Jasie! It's been so long since we've had sex!"
He groaned annoyed. "Three days ago to be exact. Maybe I'm not really digging your dark hair, just get out of the fucking way, will you?"
Summer let out an offended squeal when Jason pushed her to the side, barging further through the corridor. People started to get out of the way the second they saw him so he wouldn't have any more irrelevant conversations. When he stepped out of the building he started running again, avoiding the cold, sharp, wind that adjusted itself on his bare arms.
Although the cafeteria was just short in distance, he arrived all freezing.
Coldness had seeped itself through his clothes and he shuffled inside as the warmth almost made him moan. "Why do you always do this, Jason?"
The voice came from one of the waitresses. Her name was Yanamaria Cobarrubias and she was a big, cuddly, dark-haired Latina who travelled everywhere as long as Jason was going there. She used to be the maid in the house and she had always been like a second mother to Jason, especially when he started dating Alexia. He knew nothing about Spanish people in general, let alone a rich, spoiled Latina. Yanamaria helped him with almost everything and when he decided to go to college his parents didn't trust him to go there on his own. Yanamaria applied for a job here and fortunately they hired her in a heartbeat.
Jason didn't mind. He actually loved having her around and he couldn't imagine being without her. Sure she was treating him differently than the others, but did he really care?
"Don't start the morning off with bad vibes, Maria." Jason murmured as he bend over the counter, planting a kiss on her cheek. Maria pushed him away. "Whatever. Go to your friends, Cariño. Same as always?"
He didn't even have to answer. He loved getting special treatment. He didn't like being like everyone else.
Nearing Chaz' and Ryan's table, Alexia was indeed sitting there. Her hair was let loose and she wore tight clothes that brought out the best of her curves, just like always. Sometimes it was tiring.
There was a big smile on her face. Chaz had said something and she started laughing, holding her stomach. Jason grinned and grabbed a chair, accompanying them.
"Morning, Jason." Ryan smiled.
"Morning guys."
Alexia's face turned serious when she spotted him and she licked her lips, looking down at her plate. "Morning, Jason."
He didn't reply.
The four of them continued eating their breakfast in silence. Sometimes they would talk about simple topics, but that was it. Jason moved closer to Alexia intentionally and he knew she felt it. And he knew she enjoyed it.
"So, Alexia. How's, you know, your family?"
She looked up and faced Jason. Again, he had done something intentionally and again he knew she knew that. She cocked her head to the side as she kept their gaze locked.
"They're all fine. Catalina got divorced, again. Dominic's wife is pregnant, Stefano is still fooling around with every single woman on this planet, Teodoro is graduating college this year and little Frederico is turning five this weekend. Mom and dad are just as usual."
Jason chuckled as he let his mind wander off to her family. They were hectic, but there was no family on earth as close as theirs was.
"Five already? That's crazy." Last time he'd seen Freddie, the kid had just learned how to walk. Jason was there throughout his younger years and had grown very close to the kid.
"Yep." Alexia popped and took a sip of her drink.
"Man, I miss Teo!" he continued. Teodoro was--besides Alexia--the closest person in the Valdez family to Jason. They were actually great friends and hung out a lot without Alexia. He didn't see Stefano often since that guy was literally after girls all the time, just like Jason was.
Dominic was not the oldest brother, but he had settled down way before anyone.
Catalina was only a couple years older than Teo was but she was always in Jason's and Alexia's business. Sure it was annoying sometimes, but she was great company and Jason didn't know a single person that loved Alexia more than Catalina did, himself excluded.
"Yeah, you were great friends." Alexia mumbled, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks. This was getting awkward.
It was silent again as Jason tried to remember the people that had been such a big part of his life a couple years ago. Chaz and Ryan started talking to Alexia about some people they knew from high school until Jason started asking questions again.
"How about Damian Albarran?"
The silence that followed this question was icy and most certainly not comfortable. Jason had been meaning to ask this ever since he saw her walking into the classroom. He pulled up his eyebrow cockily and slurped his drink, not looking away from Alexia.
She knew this game. He always looked like this when he was angry, mad or when he had found something out she had been trying to hide. The point of his look was trying to manipulate and scare her into confession, and for the first months of their relationship it actually worked. After that, she started to understand and stepped up her own game a little bit.
"He's fine." Alexia responded calmly, looking him straight in the eye.
"How's your marriage?"
She flinched and Jason saw it. He also saw how quick she brushed it off.
"Our marriage is fine, too. The wedding is in nine months, and although we've already sent out all the invitations I'm sure I can find some for you too. I'm very excited."
A painful ripple went through his heart, fury pulsing throughout his body. Clenching his jaw, he stood up and kicked the chair back into its place. Chaz' chocolate milk flew out of his mug and he frowned irritably. "Turn it down a notch, Jason, will you? You just spilled my chocolate milk!"
Jason's chest rose heavily, hardly suppressing his rage.
Maria saw it all happen and she hurried away from her spot behind the counter, walking over to Jason.
"Maria, I don't need your help." Jason hissed, pushing her shoulder gently. He would never in his entire life be able to hurt her on purpose.
Alexia's head snapped up. "Maria?"
Maria's eyes widened when she noticed Alexia. "Alexia? Mi amore!" She was ready to pull the girl into a tight hug until she remembered Jason's angry face.
Jason was getting sick of this stupid Spanish talk, it made him throw up. "Jason, ay, what happened?" Maria took a step towards him. He shook his head. "It's nothing, just get out of the way."
"Nothing? There was definitely something, papi, what happened?"
"Nothing! I need to fucking leave, Maria."
"Don't talk to me like that! Who the hell do you think I am?"she voiced as she pinched his ear, making him wince. He escaped her grip and cupped his ear as he left the cafeteria, not even looking back.
"Don't come looking for me when you need help, bastardo!" Jason ignored her cry, which was loud even though he was outside.
This morning turned out to be worse than it could've ever been.
