Elvis the Pelvis
John was determined to forget about Barbara. She could find herself a fella. He would find himself a bird. And, there she was on the other side of the living room. It wasn't John who saw her first. It was Vicar.
"I've never seen her before."
John looked in the same direction. It was useless. All he could see was a blur of shapes. He needed to get closer to see her.
Vicar continued. "I'm going to introduce myself." John fell into step with his mate.
The young woman came into focus. She looked different from the other birds at the party. She had caramel-colored skin, hazel eyes, and wavy chestnut hair. John quickened his steps to get to her first, but Vicar kept up with him.
Carolyn Jones wasn't comfortable attending a party at a stranger's house. But, her good girlfriend Jean insisted that she go with her. And, then she'd left her alone to get a barm cake and a Coke.
She tried to appear casual but was aware of the two young men that approached her. She hoped this didn't turn into a game of 'What are you?'.
The fair-haired young man held out his hand. A bright smile on his face and casualness to his demeanor. "I'm Victor and -"
"John." The impatient young man cut in, holding out his hand as well.
Vicar continued. "Welcome to my home."
"I'm Carolyn." She shook hands with the lad who introduced himself as Victor. Then shook hands with John.
"Are you here by yourself?" John asked the question both lads wanted to know.
"I'm here with my friend, Jean. She went to get a bite to eat." She explained, looking to where Jean had walked out of the room. "There she is." She pointed out a plump young woman, walking over to them with a barm cake and a Coke in her hands. "Jean, this Victor. It's his house. And, this is John."
"Nice to meet you, Jean." Vicar greeted her.
"Do you want to dance?" John asked Carolyn, not wasting time. He didn't want to lose out to Vicar.
Carolyn was hesitant to agree to a dance. But she didn't want to be rude. She turned to Jean. "You'll be alright?"
John spoke up. "Vicar will keep her company." He patted his mate's shoulder.
"Go on and dance." Jean replied.
Carolyn took the hand John offered her and allowed herself to be led to the middle of the room. A handful of teens were dancing to the Elvis record 'Love Me Tender' playing on the record player. John slipped his hands onto her hips, and she rested her hands on his shoulders. They swayed to the ballad. "This is my favorite song of his." She smiled, thinking of Elvis singing to her, and relaxed against John.
John thought Carolyn was beautiful, especially when she smiled. He wrapped his arms around her waist and held her close. "I like his rockers."
"Me too. I have all of his records."
Much to his disappointment the song came to an end.
"I should get back to my friend." Carolyn slipped her hands off of John's shoulders.
John didn't want to let her go. He looked over her shoulder, squinting his eyes to see that Vicar was still with Carolyn's friend. "She's fine. One more dance."
Carolyn briefly looked over at Jean chat with Vicar. The music started again and the B-side to 'Love Me Tender' which was 'Any Way You Want Me' began to play on the record player. She wrapped her arms around John's neck. "One more dance." They began to slow dance again.
"You have all of Elvis's records?" John asked, trying to keep the conversation going.
"I do. What about you?"
"I've got some of them. Maybe, I can come over some time to listen to your records." John proposed.
This was supposed to be one dance. It had turned into two dances and he was trying to make plans. She didn't know what to make of the young man, but she was intrigued by his forwardness.
