Chapter Twenty Eight
"What happened there, Arya?" Kirti asked. "Why they didn't stop for night even after Yuvraj's request?" Vrushali asked further. "And, why was Arundhati crying?" Supriya asked. "Why is your face morphed in sadness and guilt?" Urvi asked.
Urvi was also there with his wives and they were chatting about Pandavas when he entered. The topic was immediately dropped as the four knew about his tensed state over Varnavrat incident.
He did accept he made a mistake but it was too late for that. Too late!
"Jeez. Stop with these questions and let me answer", Karna chuckled. "Well...Arundhati...is crying...because of me", Karna sighed. The four looked at him confused.
"She wants to marry me", Karna said coming to the point.
"What?" The four yelled. "Well...Yes. She wants to marry me", Karna said. Kirti rushed to him and held his hand. She looked at him with big, doe shaped, innocent eyes. "Arya", she said. Her eyes were red. She was ready to cry.
"I didn't agree, sweetheart", he said. And, smiled softly.
"She must be heartbroken", Urvi said. "She was", Karna agreed. "Anyways, I will leave you alone. I don't want to be the third person here, between you and your wives", Urvi said, nonchalantly.
"I have appointed extra guards", Karna shouted as she was escorted by maids. He got Urvi's whine in return making him and the three Anga Queens chuckle.
"Should we sleep?" Karna asked and the three nodded.
Outskirts of Hastinapura
Arundhati was crying badly after Karn's rejection.
"Please don't cry", her father said sadly. He couldn't see his daughter in pain and felt helpless at this moment.
"How could he r-reject me?" Arundhati sobbed. "I-I had so many dreams with him, already", she said further. Her father hugged her as she cried furiously.
"I can't live without him. I want to die, father. I want to die", Arundhati said. Her father felt his heart clench. "Please don't say like this, my dear", he requested.
Karn's bedroom
Karna felt some movement. He felt someone was nearby. He got in alert mode and stood up from the bed. He tucked his wives inside the blanket and picked his sword.
He picked his bow and wore the basket having arrows. He went outside and followed his instincts. He reached the outskirts of the palace, on his horse. He had no chariot with him, as it was night.
"Angraj", he heard a cry and saw the Vaanar king. He was crying. "King, you here?" Karna asked. He was not comfortable with meeting him, knowing Arundhati's wish and his rejection.
"Please save my daughter", the king cried. Karna got worried. "What happened to her?" He asked. "She is really heartbroken after your refusal. And, she went insane. She ran away somewhere and was having suicidal thoughts", The king said.
Karna widened his eyes. "What?!" Karna yelled in shock. "Where did she go?" Karna asked in panick. The king pointed at right.
"Please go in the palace. I will bring her back", Karna said determined. He went on his horse.
He searched in fear and worse thoughts coming in his mind, when he saw Arundhati. He widened his eyes seeing her.
She had removed her duppatta and hanged it on a tree.
He jumped from the horse and ran towards her in jet speed. He pulled her before she could take a step further. "What the heck are you doing?" Karna shouted. Arundhati cried and struggled in his arms. "Leave me", she said.
"Stop this madness, Arundhati. For God's sake", he yelled.
Arundhati stopped after hearing him yell and looked at him. He was staring at her angrily. "Just a rejection! Just a rejection made you take this step? Why? Are you less than me? Is your life ruined just because you can't marry me? Won't you get anyone else, maybe someone better than me? What is going on in your head?" Karna asked.
"Yes, I have no life now. I can't get anyone better than you because you are the best in my eyes. I love you. I want to marry you", Arundhati screamed back as Karna stared at her. Both breathing heavily due to the constant shouting. "I want to rush to you with full rights. I want to stop you from going in fire and show you my concern, in front of everyone. I want to do it", Arundhati cried in his arms.
"But, I can't get it", Arundhati said. "So let me die", she shouted and struggled in his arms again.
"Arundhati!" Karna yelled.
"How can you be so selfish?" Karna asked angrily. "You know how worried your father is and how much he is crying? He has given this life to you for what? End it over a man you just met? What about all his sacrifices and struggles to look after you? You can't give your life like that. Running away from problems is never the solution, Arundhati. And, rejection is not the valid reason to give your life", Karna said.
"Nevertheless, any reason isn't enough to justify giving your life. Life is given to us by God and our parents so how can we decide when to end it? And...", Karna sighed. "Life is unfair. This is the truth. You think you will take this step and accept you? Ok...I would. But, is this right?" Karna asked and Arundhati looked down.
"I got plenty of insults when I held the bow. In this struggle, my brother got snatched from me. What should I do? Give my life? No. I moved on. I did what I was supposed to do. And...here you are giving your life? Why? Arundhati", Karna asked.
"I hope you understand now. Can we go home?" Karna asked. Arundhati nodded. Karna pulled her and helped her climb the horse. He climbed on the horse, behind her. He held the ropes and instructed the horse to move. Arundhati was caged in his arms and she felt goosebumps by this closeness.
They reached the palace.
Arundhati was immediately engulfed in a hug by her father who started crying. Arundhati hugged him back.
"Mitr?" Duryodhan asked. Karna turned around to see Duryodhan. "What is happening?" Duryodhan asked. Karna opened his mouth to say, "Meet me in the meeting room", he said and went. Karna sighed and followed him.
"Why you refused the proposal?" Duryodhan enquired.
"You know why I did that", Karna said. "Now, you must change your decision", Duryodhan said firmly. "You need to marry her", he said.
"Are you serious? Duryodhan", Karna asked. "Yes, I am", Duryodhan replied back. "The overconfident king boasted about the marriage everywhere and now in their eyes Arundhati would be a rejected girl and you know where it would go", Duryodhan rolled his eyes.
"The terrible fact is, in their tribe, everyone abandon the rejected girl and leave her to die", Duryodhan said. "Arundhati is a princess so she will attract all royals also", Duryodhan pointed out.
"You need to marry her, to save her from abandonment", Duryodhan said, keeping his hand on Karn's shoulder who sighed and looked down.
