Chapter Thirty One
Karna got ready and arrived in the royal court. The mandap was set there itself and they were marrying. His wives stood at the mandap and Karna looked at them. They gave him smiles indicating their approval. He sat beside Arundhati.
Arundhati was nervous. He held her hand and she held back firmly. The marriage went forward and soon it was completed.
They took blessings of elders. He decided to leave for Anga at once. He needed to check his kingdom. Though, his parents and some of his friends were there, with ministers. He got regular updates about Anga.
"Mitr, I need to leave", Karna said and Duryodhan's smile fell. "I will return soon", he assured and Duryodhan nodded.
They went outside. There were two chariots. Even Urvi was going back. She tried to use every way but got no information. She accepted that Pandavas were dead now.
She didn't meet Karn's gaze for once and Karna understood why.
His wives bid farewell to her. Urvi went without looking back for once.
Karna sighed heavily. His wives may be good with him but he knew they were dissappointed. However, they decided to move on. It wasn't easy for Urvi though as Arjun was her best friend.
Arundhati knew about it too. The whole Aryavrat had an idea that Kauravas were behind it and it was obvious. The royals didn't show it because it was of no use as Dhritrashtra would hardly take any step against his sons misdeeds.
Karna got on the chariot. Dusshala had brought a big chariot for him. It had a shed over it and two seats facing each other. The seats was enough to fit three people.
His three wives sat in front while Arundhati sat with him.
Karna was simply grateful to Dusshala. The sun was shining bright and he pitied his wives as they had to wear so many jewellery and heavy dresses.
He didn't even knew how they managed to stay alive.
Panchal
"You can't behave like this Pitashree", Drishtadyumna said. He was fighting with his father over Drupad's behavior towards Draupadi.
"And to begin with, Arjun can't be dead as Draupadi has literally taken birth for him. Why would Gods send her otherwise? Even if he is dead, she's your daughter. Are you seriously viewing her as your weapon?" He asked.
"Tomorrow if Dronacharya dies, will you disown me too?" He asked.
"We are your kids. We are boons from God. So don't behave like this with us. Draupadi is feeling so lonely and pained. She misses her whole childhood and directly takes birth, only to get abandoned by her father. You literally tormented sages to get her", Drishtadyumna said.
Drupad sighed.
"Pitashree. Please don't behave like this and accept her whole heartedly. She has only us. And, she's our princess", Drishtadyumna said.
"Guess you are right. That poor girl has no fault in what happened with Arjun. I am really terrible for abandoning her like that. I have to correct my mistakes", Drupad said determined and Drishtadyumna smiled.
"I need to meet my daughter, Let's go", Drupad said.
Anga Outskirts
It was evening now.
The chariot had reached the outskirts of Anga. Karna was glancing outside, his wives were walking for a while as they were tired after sitting for so long.
Karna thought about Pandavas demise in that time. Somewhere, he was glad that it was an early death. The intensity of rivalry, these cousins shared, if Pandavas would have been alive today, it would have been a full blown war.
Only if he knew, his assumptions were going to be correct in the future.
A terrible war was on the way.
"Let's go, it will be late", Karna said and his wives came back. They settled on the seats and the chariot moved.
They reached the kingdom. Everyone welcomed them with smiles. They returned it back.
It felt good to be here after all the drama!
They went inside the palace. "Rest for a while", Karna said to his wives and they departed in their rooms. He went in his room and lied on the bed.
Memory of Kunti singing lullaby to him came in his mind.
He widened his eyes and woke up. He sighed and rested his head on the bed rest.
Karna got up from his bed and decided to do his work instead of lying like that.
Only to get disturbed AGAIN!
"Yes...", Karna was going to discuss some issue when a soldier brought a letter. Karna frowned seeing it. "It's from Kumar Duryodhan, Maharaj", the soldier said and Karna stood up quickly.
He took the letter from the soldier and opened it. He started reading whatever was written inside.
Priye Mitr.
I know that whenever you decide to go to Anga, I bring something up and for that I apologise. But, Drupad happens to have daughters from some veneration and he has invited us in their Swayamvara.
It would be really great if you start of now and we can go to Panchal together. And, don't worry, I won't tell you to participate. You can just view it like other people if you don't desire to take a part.
Waiting for you
Karna raised his eyebrows. Panchal has princesses? Since when?
"I will tell some solutions regarding this and then leave", Karna announced. He discussed the points he thought were valid enough and then dismissed the court.
"Call my wives in the garden, please", he told the soldier politely and the soldier went to call the Queens.
Karna went in the royal garden and soon heard sounds of anklets coming.
He turned around and saw his wives.
"Arya", they said. Karna showed them the letter. "Duryodhan has called me back", he said.
"Arya, we rarely stay in our kingdom. Most of our time is spent in Hastinapura", Kirti said worriedly. "Our governance here is quite important than the duty towards Kumar Duryodhan", Supriya added.
"I know. That's why I want to leave these things on you four till I return back. I am sure you can look after the activities here. I will explain everything on you and then leave", Karna said.
"But...what is the letter about?" Arundhati asked. "Arya", she added. "It's the invitation to Panchal for swayamvar", Karna said. "I won't take part in it", he added hurriedly.
"Panchal doesn't have princesses, does it?" Vrushali asked in confusion. "Panchal Naresh got them from some veneration", Karna replied.
"Veneration? And nobody knew about it?" Vrushali said. "He kept it hidden maybe. Anyways, I need to leave", Karna said.
"Come, I will tell you about the court proceedings", he said.
Panchal
Draupadi was sitting gloomily on the swing.
Her three sisters and Shikandini were sadly staring at her.
"Pitashree", she said hesitantly when Drupad entered in her room. He was overwhelmed hearing Pitashree from her mouth and he pulled her in a hug.
"My putri", he sobbed. "I am sorry about my behaviour. I am really terrible. I don't deserve you", he cried.
Draupadi was smiling after feeling so loved by her father.
"Please don't say this, pitashree. I know you were disturbed with the things going on but you love me. I was just waiting for you", she said softly. Drupad caressed her hair.
"Now no ignorance and more mistakes. I will rectify it definitely", Drupad said as they pulled apart.
"I will prepare for your swayamvar. My daughter doesn't need to wait for anyone. If not Arjun, she can get someone else who is mighty and wise", Drupad said.
Draupadi had just taken birth so she didn't feel that love that she would not replace Arjun with anyone but surely she had created an imaginary world with him which saddened her as it won't become real because he was not here.
"Aren't you happy?" Drupad asked, cupping her chin and looking at her concerned and sadly.
"I just grew up an attachment in my heart for him", Draupadi said hesitantly and looked down, fiddling with her fingers.
"Life is all about moving on, Putri. Nothing stays permanent. You need to accept that and live your life. Already you didn't live your childhood", Drupad said.
Draupadi nodded with a heavy heart.
Drupad patted her head and went to do his work.
Draupadi smiling hugged Drishtadyumna and broke down. "Thank you so much, bhrata shree. I love you", she sobbed as he chuckled and tightened his hold around her, caressing her hair. He invited the other three and Shikandini and they rushed towards both of them, joining the hug.
They pulled away after some time.
"Well...Angraj is coming", Drishtadyumna teased.
"I am scared", Kalyani whined. "You are what?" Draupadi asked looking at her weirdly. "Scared. Our grooms are mighty warriors. I think I will faint when he comes before me", Kalyani said in panick.
Draupadi laughed loudly hearing it. "He won't eat you", she said, giggling.
"What about you Esha?" Draupadi asked smiling.
Esha smiled a little. But, her face didn't show that happiness.
He was involved in Varnavrat Conspiracy
This thought roamed in her mind.
"Well...Kalyani is scared and Esha is disinterested. But, our Abhilasha is blushing hard", Shikandini laughed as Draupadi teased Abhilasha.
Abhilasha looked down with beetroot shade of red on her face and smiling widely, closing her eyes shut, feeling goosebumps.
Karna was coming.
