Chapter Thirteen
The swyamvar began with great joy and enthusiasm as all kings prided about why Bhanumati would choose them. Duryodhan had scowl on his face as Yudhister was also present there. Karna had been holding him back.
Bhanumati and Supriya along with Urvi and other maids entered in the hall. Urvi had her gaze stuck at Karna. He was somewhat different. She had seen him for the first time and felt really intrigued by him along with the fact that he freed Duryodhan from Arjun's arrows.
He must be a really great archer.
"Welcome everyone. I hope you know what is going to happen. My putri will garland someone by her will and marry him. It's my request that the other kings don't take rejection by heart and accept my daughter's decision. Thank you", King said.
Bhanumati was feeling nervous but Supriya and Urvi managed to distract her. They came forward and started introducing her to the suitors.
Duryodhan smirked widely as she rejected everyone and came towards him. He was sure that she would choose him. However, Supriya, who was given the task of introducing the Princess to the men was lost in his best friend who seemed equally interested as he smiled.
Seems like they met earlier.
It's then Duryodhan remembered, Karna telling about how he met a girl and helped her. Her name was Supriya.
"Stop staring", Duryodhan muttered in Karna's ear. "You have two wives at home, idiot", Duryodhana laughed embarrassing Karna as he looked away. All others looking at their whispering and bond with interest. Duryodhan was known to be arrogant but he gelled so well with the charioteer's son raising questions on the normal rumours spread on the Prince of Aryavrat.
"Meet Hastinapur's prince, Duryodhan", Supriya said. Duryodhan smiled big as Bhanumati looked at him. "Why would you want to marry him, princess?" Asked a king. "Despite his father being the king, he's not chosen as the crown Prince so I wonder what good he must have inside him? I think you should go forward", the king suggested.
Laughter erupted in the hall angering Duryodhan and Karna. Arjun had a small smile out of natural instinct but he did feel bad while Yudhister had a frown on his face.
People and their comments were also a big reason for the enmity between the cousins.
"Let's go forward", Bhanumati said, looking at Yudhister who smiled at her. She moved forward and Urvi and Supriya followed her, teasing her. To everyone, it became quite clear that she was going to choose Yudhister.
Karna sighed seeing this. He thought of ways to console Duryodhan but didn't eye his friend in the process, who moved forward and lifted Bhanumati in his arms making everyone gasp.
"This is kidnap!" Bhanumati's father exclaimed horrified as Karna came out of his trance and rushed towards Duryodhana, grumbling under his breath. Duryodhan didn't even think what consequences his actions could bring which always concerned Karna for his friend.
"Mitra. I am taking her", Duryodhan said as Bhanumati started crying and begging him to let go of her. Duryodhana turned around to go but an arrow stopped him as it hit on his way.
"Duryodhan!" Arjun shouted in anger and raised his bow. Karna felt his duty calling him and getting a nod from Duryodhana, raised his bow too.
Urvi felt as if she judged Karna wrongly and he was not good by heart. She went ahead leaving him to try and aid to her friend. All ran outside leaving Arjun and Karna and Yudhister being the silent spectator to the duel. Even, Supriya stayed there, gasping at the scene.
"Save your princess", Arjun commanded Supriya who ran outside alerting Karna. He shot an arrow which multiplied and attacked Arjuna but Arjuna striked them off easily. However, it was of no benefit as Karna went outside to fight other kings as Duryodhan was alone.
Arjuna knew that it was his concern for his friend that forced him to go in between otherwise Karna would have never left the duel incomplete.
Duryodhan and Karna started fighting with other Aryavrat warriors. It was a scary scene to see.
"Jyesht", Arjuna protested as Yudhister held him from going for the sake of 'Dharma'. Arjun sighed in anger but couldn't defy his elder brother's words.
Karna was fighting when a small knife was raised in front of him stopping him. It was just near his neck but Karna noticed the hand holding the knife was somewhat shaking. Karna looked behind to see Supriya with tears in her eyes but the scowl didn't leave her face.
"Don't do this", she requested. "Don't take her. Don't ruin her dreams", she said. The hold on the knife tightening. Even though, she was scared, she refused to show it and decided to stand for her friend.
Karna was impressed!
"I am just fulfilling my duty, Supriya", Karna said calmly taking the knife. He held her hands, tying them with rope to the chariot as she tried to get away. "Don't", Karna sighed and Supriya stopped struggling. "Is your duty so important? You are a gentleman right? How can you support your friend in this?" Supriya asked.
Karna avoided answering her questions and left to fight. "S-sakhi, r-run away", Supriya said. "What? Leaving you? Never", Bhanumati said. "Take the advantage. You are not tied. Just run away before both these men come back, please", Supriya said in tears.
"No. You are tied, Supriya. They can harm you. I am not selfish", Bhanumati said. "Yeah, but you are stupid. You are getting the opportunity yet you are not running away", Supriya snarled. "Please go", she requested as her voice cracked.
"No one will accept me", Bhanumati said. "You are still in your Kingdom. This doesn't count as an abduction. Anyways, you are not a burden. See, Maharaj is also fighting. Hastinapura is a mighty empire, if he didn't love you, he would have accepted it as a good alliance but he does love you. You're his daughter! So escape quickly. You can live here till your lifetime", Supriya said.
Bhanumati nodded. Just as she was about to step down, Karna returned back. He raised his eyebrows as both friends looked at him scared. "Please don't, princess", he requested and Bhanumati reluctantly didn't step out of the chariot.
Duryodhan returned back too. Karna started freeing Supriya. Bhanumati sadly waved at her as Supriya looked at her with tears. She asked by her eyes if she should accompany but Bhanumati furiously shook her head in refusal. Supriya couldn't ruin her life because of her.
"Rajkumar. It's my request that you take Supriya too", Queen requested, accompanied by Urvi. Supriya, Urvi and Bhanumati widened their eyes as they looked at the Queen in disbelieve. "She knows my daughter best. Take her too", the Queen said.
"No", Bhanumati cried. "How can you be so selfish, mom? Supriya has seen so many dreams regarding her marriage and you want to ruin them", Bhanumati said. "She doesn't deserve this for everything she's done", Urvi added.
Karna looked at Supriya who was silently crying. He felt really bad. He noticed her backing away slowly so that she could run away in case they decide to take her.
"She's not even a princess, your maid, that's it", Queen said in defence as Supriya looked up, heartbroken.
"Mitr. Take her", Duryodhan said. Supriya nodded no as she cried furiously and tried to run. Karna couldn't defy what his friend told him to do so he shot an arrow and it turned in rope, tying her.
"No, please don't do this", Bhanumati requested. "I am taking you with me. Taking your best friend and completing your mother's demand is the least thing, I can do for you", Duryodhan said quietly.
Karna approached Supriya. "P-please", Supriya stuttered. Karna gently held her shoulders. He steadied her and then held her chin, making her look up.
"I will marry you, Supriya".
