Chapter Ten
Duryodhana was really enraged. Arjuna defeated Drupad and gave what Dronacharya demanded. But, he was more concerned. Dronacharya told them about Karna going to battle Jarasandh. His tone told he was somewhat concerned for Karna.
Arjuna's expressions were unexplainable. "He knows about Jarasandh's power right?" Arjun muttered. Arjun was feeling scared and he didn't knew why.
"He has gone crazy. You all proceed. I am going behind him. He needs to be confronted. Idiot", Duryodhana said. At a point, Arjuna smiled. It was at time of Karna, Duryodhana seemed so selfless and genuinely concerned.
It was also another reason for Arjun's dislike for Karna as Duryodhana never gave them this love despite them being cousins and just hatred.
"I am leaving", Duryodhana said and ignoring everyone calling him, he left immediately.
When he reached there, he saw Karna had defeated Jarasandh. However, Duryodhana was enraged. He smacked Karna's head hard making him hiss. "Duryodhan", Karna whined. "Are you mad? Why are you so keen on getting in troubles?" Duryodhana asked.
"Look who's talking", Karna deadpanned. Duryodhan rolled his eyes. "I was just coming", Karna said. He dragged Duryodhan from there.
"You didn't kill him?" Duryodhana asked confused. "He was ready to leave my people. So I didn't kill him. I have plenty of work to do", Karna said.
"Where are bhabhis?" He asked. Karna shrugged. "They are in Anga", he said. "Anga? Are you mad? The people there are still captive. What if while you were fighting, someone would have harmed them?" Duryodhana asked.
"I sent a letter to Hastinapura just in case. Now, don't be angry on me. I am already so tired after fighting", Karna said dramatically making Duryodhana grumble on his antics. They marched towards Anga.
"I won", Karna cheered and his wives rushed towards him. "Well. You did", they heard and saw Bhishma.
"But that doesn't change, it was simply a stupidity", Bhishma said. "Nice way to welcome someone", Karna said sarcastically. "Hope Arjun doesn't hear that", he muttered under his breath.
Bhishma heard it and raised his eyebrows. "He was not alone but you went alone. And, please don't even compare Drupad and Jarasandh. Clearly, it's you who did this stupidity. Arjun went with our permission", he said.
"I also wrote a letter to you", Karna said in defence. "And, I reached on time", Bhishma deadpanned. "You should listen to what elders are advising you about. What if you would have not won?" Bhishma asked.
"I would have died?" Karna said but it came out as a question. "Karn", Duryodhana warned. "Don't talk about death", Duryodhana said.
Karna sighed. "Fine", he said. "Jarasandh may have won the duel and Hastinapura would have suffered. Have you thought about it?" Bhishma asked. Karna felt anger rising in his veins.
"For your Kingdom, will you forget these people? Aren't they your people too?" He asked. Bhishma sighed. "A small sacrifice of minority for well fare of majority is worth it", Bhishma said. Karna scrunched his face in disgust.
"So you are differentiating? What wrong have these people done? As a royal, it's your duty to protect each and every person. But, I forgot that this Kingdom just rules, service to people is a far away thing. Perhaps, my brother's sacrifice for the greater good and teachings to people was also worth it, eh?" Karna asked angrily.
"Karna", Bhishma shouted. "What? What will you do? Will you also make me swallow molten gold? Then do it. I am not scared of it. Do it", he said.
"Arya", Karna heard and saw Kirti coming to him. "Arya, calm down", she said in tears. Vrushali came to the other side. Karna nodded. "You and I both know that I don't agree with any of your rules and regulations. So why do you even try to convince me?" Karna asked.
"The only thing that matters is, I won. I don't think I will talk further about anything now", he said. "Mitr. You are already tired. It's fine", Duryodhana said. "Sorry", Karna said. Duryodhana patted his back lightly.
"Darlings, we need to work on our kingdom", Karna said. "See. We have done something", Vrushali said, excitedly.
"Pitahmah, I understand your concerns but now these people are our people. We can't ignore them", Kirti said politely and respectfully. Karna looked away.
"Mitr. I will help too", Duryodhana said. "No. You can't ignore your duties in the kingdom. You should take care so that you can be the crown Prince. I will keep informing you about the things here", Karna said.
"What about the war, by the way?" Karna asked. Duryodhana's smile fell. "Well...", he told Karna everything. Karna had his fists clenched by the end.
"Anyways, all that matters is you're safe", Karna said. "Hey. It's Pandavas who saved me. Would have preferred...", he stopped as Karna scowled at him. "It's alright. Everything is fine. Don't think much about it and focus on the swayamvar of Bhanumati", Karna said.
Duryodhana smiled big hearing it. "Yes", he said. "I will meet on that day only then. We can go to Kalinga from Hastinapur itself", Karna said. "Ok. But you are sure, you don't want any help right?" Duryodhana asked.
"Yeah, Yeah", Karna rolled his eyes and chuckled. Duryodhana hugged him and folded his hands in respect to his sister in laws. He departed with Bhishma who was complaining about Karna to Duryodhana.
Duryodhana winked back and Karna laughed. Bhishma would be always upset with Karna.
Karna turned around.
"Let's get to work", Karna instructed his wives who nodded at him, smiling and got to work.
Here, In Hastinapura
"I am so impressed by you Arjun", Dronacharya praised Arjun who bowed down and took his blessings. The other four smiled while Kauravas looked with jealousy.
"How I wish, I would have taken Karna", Duryodhana grumbled under his breath.
"Maharaj. Please fulfill your promise", Dronacharya said. The Princes frowned and looked at the king. "Promise? What promise is Pitahmah talking about pitashree?" Duryodhana asked.
Dhritrashtra said in a slow voice, "One who wins the fight will be the king. As Pandavas won the fight, Yudhister will be the crown prince", Dhritrashtra said.
Duryodhana widened his eyes hearing it while Arjun smiled genuinely, happy for his jyesht.
"Yes", Bheem shouted happily and smirked at Duryodhan.
"The ceremony will happen tomorrow itself. Court is dismissed", Dhritrashtra said and Duryodhan marched out of the court. He started smashing things in his room.
The Pandavas were spending quality time with Kunti. But, the others were worried seeing Duryodhan angry. Quickly, a messenger was sent to inform Karn about the happenings and others tried to calm Duryodhan.
Meanwhile, Karna was busy in settling his kingdom. He had formed a good friendship with the people in a shorter time and his wives were busy playing with the kids and bringing joy in the environment.
Karna was smiling and cleaning the dirt on the land. It was almost evening, when the messenger reached him.
"Angraj", he shouted in a scared voice. Karna turned around and frowned seeing the fearful face. Immediately, he got an idea that Duryodhana was in sour mood or some trouble came up.
"Yes?" He asked formally. "Kumar Duryodhan is not in his senses. He's destroying everything", the messenger said. Karna didn't waste anytime and got on the chariot. "Arya. We will stay here and complete the work by then", Kirti shouted and Karna, who was waiting for them, nodded and went back to Hastinapura.
He was frustrated as he knew he would reach late and could not fly in air to reach in the minimum time possible.
"Just be save, Mitr", he whispered.
