Chapter Sixty Eight
"You can go", Karna said firmly.
The people and the King and Queen were standing in front. He was in the territory of Khasi tribe but this time, this tribe was scared of them.
"W-what?" Khyati asked, not believing what she heard.
"Well...yes", Karna said. "I had taken you hostage to just stop your people from being a hurdle on my path. I didn't intend to harm you and your tribe. So, you can go", he said and freed her.
He nodded at Urvi who went to sit with Supriya in her palanquin.
All his wives and Vasudha peeked outside and smiled.
Urvi's outfit
Khyati's outfit
Khyati was touched by his greatness and fell at his feet, taking him by surprise.
"What are you doing?" He said in panick. "Get up", he added and moved back as he could not touch a woman without her consent.
Khyati got up and folded her hands.
"Thank you, Angraj and I am sorry", Khyati said. Karna could not say anything so he nodded.
"We'll leave now", he announced.
He went from there with his wives who smiled lovingly at him, while he was staring ahead blankly, thinking how hated he was just because of his caste and Pukhya Queen went to that extent, that she risked his life.
Meanwhile,
Khyati looked at her people, shaken.
"You have been a hostage and it's a shame on our tribe. We are known for our valour. And, your purity is questionable", her mother said.
"So, you have to be killed", her father ended.
Khyati felt her heart shattering at this and smiled painfully. "Ok. If you don't trust me, I will do what you want me to do", she said. Though, she didn't agree to anything like this.
The people had completely surrounded her so an escape was futile.
Khyati let her tears fall down as she saw the horse statue being brought. It was the way of burning people to death. They were made to sit in that horse and it suffocated them as the space was less. The fire was lit just below it and the person inside used to feel the fire, burning them.
She went silently and sat in the statue.
They hadn't noticed the absence of two kids.
Here,
"Angraj. We beg of you. Please stop", Karna heard wails.
He immediately pulled the reins stopping the chariot. He looked back and saw two kids crying and running towards them.
He stepped down from the chariot and kneeled down. The kids stopped in front of him as they cried.
"What happened? Any problem?" He asked.
"Please don't go", the boy sobbed
"They are killing mata", the girl cried.
Karn looked at them confused. "Mata?" He asked. The kids nodded at him.
"Princess Khyati", the twins said together.
Karna's eyes widened. He ran barefoot with the kids following him as the others came behind. He heard screams.
He ran even faster and the kids pointed at the horse.
He kicked it hard and the horse fell on the ground. He opened it and saw Khyati, she was burnt.
He picked her up and looked madly at the people.
"I will kill you all", he roared in anger. The maids took the Princess on his indication and Prakirti quickly took out her stuff.
"Mercy, Maharaj", the people pleaded.
"What mercy? One which you didn't have on the Princess?" Karna asked them.
"What exactly happened here?" Karna asked.
"Angraj, they were planning to kill the princess as they couldn't trust her purity because you took her with you", the boy explained.
"Please don't let them kill her, King. She's our mother", the girl cried.
"How dare you?!" Karna roared at the people. "How can you question someone's purity? Who are you to question that? And, why you need to question a woman only, always? Why not men? Don't men go out and stay out at nights? Do you ever question their purity? No...you don't. Because, a woman is supposed to stay in boundaries, eh?" Karna shouted, angrily.
"She was taken against her will. Whatever would have happened, would have been against her will! How is that her fault, please tell me! And if she even does anything by her own will, how on Earth does it matter to you? You are the people who won't even glance at someone but will be the first one to be present to ruin someone's life", he said.
"She was only performing her duty. To save you from Pukhya Queen's wrath, she attacked me. She could have chosen not to, but she did. She stood strong, for whom? For you. Royals aren't harmed. They can be saved. Common people bear tortures. It would have been you suffering from the wrath of the Pukhya Queen. The royals could have easily escaped or get hidden in the kingdom of any ally. And, she chose you all above everything. This is how you return the favour", Karna added.
The people felt ashamed and guilty.
"Arrest them. The king will decide their punishment", Karna said. Khyati widened her eyes hearing it and went in front of Karna, with difficulty due to her condition. She folded her shaking hands.
"Have mercy, Angraj. They are my people. Please don't hurt them", she requested.
Karn looked at her surprised.
"Are you serious?" He asked. She nodded at him. "You want to leave the people who tried to kill you", he hissed. She nodded again.
"How can I be the cause of my own people's misery?" She sobbed, looking at him, pleadingly.
Karna shook his head. "I am repeating it again", he said. "Born royals have weird customs and morals, which I will never understand", he said. "Leave the people", he added looking at the soldiers, going to arrest them, who nodded and stopped at their places, putting the weapons down.
"I want to reward you for your generosity", Karna said, smiling. "Ask me anything", he said.
"Marry me, Angraj", Khyati said, taking him by surprise.
