Chapter Forty Nine
Everything was done.
Taking farewell of everyone, including Kunti, Karna decided to go to Anga.
He doubted asking King Dhritrashtra about taking Kunti there, knowing be won't be refused for anything. However, he also knew that Kunti had to reside in Hastinapura only, as said by her. If she could go to Anga, means Pandavas will protest and come to take her with them to Khandavprastha.
After all, he was not her son, like they were.
As he stood on his chariot, with his wives in palanquins, he stared at the view ahead.
Many people were going to Khandavprastha as they thought the decision was wrong. He agreed it was wrong, but he wasn't going to leave his home and friend for that.
He was going to stay loyal to Duryodhan.
Duryodhan, however, was furious by this act of the people and decided to punish them. This time, Karna and Shakuni, both refused and told him that if he wanted to be a king, he had to respect his people.
It took a long while to convince Duryodhan for his departure to Anga, as his duties were more there as he was a king.
He was sure, he shouldn't stay in Hastinapura till that time. He had to go back to his kingdom.
Did he forgot to mention that Urvi, came with them?
She wanted to visit Anga and Supriya insisted her to come along. Initially, she planned to go with Arjun, but, he being a caring best friend, refused as that land was not suitable for going, yet.
He promised to call her as soon as possible.
Digvija, was also in a palanquin, with double guards around to not let her escape. Duryodhan was not arriving on a decision for her as he was furious that she attacked his best friend.
Karna requested to take her along as he feared the result of his absence and Duryodhan's impulsive behaviour.
He was all energetic in start, looking around in alert, as this time, he handled his chariot on his own.
However,
The journey proved to be quite long and tiring.
"You want to stop here?" Karna shouted so that his wives could hear him. "There are fruits and I believe, this land must contain sweet potatoes. I think it will be best if we rest for a while as half the way is still needed to be covered", he explained.
"As you wish, Arya", Kalyani said.
"But", Urvi frowned. "There is a cave here. Are you sure, it's safe? It must have bear inside or demon", Urvi said.
"We have Arya with us, Urvi. Don't worry", Supriya smiled.
After they stopped, Karna got down and his wives along with Urvi went to look for sweet potatoes in the garden. He had a close eye on them as he looked back at Digvija, crying and looking outside.
"You want to get out, for a while?" Karna asked, approaching her.
Digvija just looked the other side with an irritated expression on her face.
Karn almost chuckled seeing her expressions.
She looked cute...
"Ok...I guess...", he said. "So, what now? Will you keep sitting here? You need to get out for inhaling fresh air and feel relaxed at least", he said.
"Stop treating me like a guest when you are not sending me home. Let me be a hostage only", she said, frustrated, as tears welled up in her eyes.
Karna looked at her sadly.
"I know it's frustrating to stay away from your house", he said. "But, I don't really want to send you back", he said, hesitantly.
Digvija looked at him, scared.
"I didn't mean it in that way", he said hurriedly. "I don't want to send you back because of your family's behaviour towards you", he said.
"How does it concern you?" Digvija asked.
"It concerns me as a human", Karna said.
Digvija scoffed and looked away.
"Digvija", Karna warned. "Don't be like this", he said. He offered his hand towards her.
Digvija looked at his hand and then at him.
"Trust me? Will you?" Karna asked.
Digvija held his hand and stepped out.
"There is an area here which is often terrorised by a kingdom. I want you to lead the army of Hastinapura here, as per King's order and win the duel", Karna said.
"Why should I do it?" Digvija questioned.
"Well...going back now won't make sense. In order to go back to your home, you need to prove that you are a worthy warrior and being a girl doesn't matter at all", Karna said. He looked at her raising an eyebrow. "This is a golden opportunity, won't you grab it?" He asked.
Digvija looked at him and bit her lower lip.
"I will do it", she said after taking a deep breath. "I will be by your side", Karna grinned. "I don't need it. I am self sufficient", she stated with pride.
"That's why you are here", Karna teased making her scowl at him.
"When are you going to attack?" She asked. Karna thought for a moment. "I need to ask Duryodhan", he chimed. "How will you? You are literally going to Anga only to return back? That's your kingdom and your presence is required there", Digvija said.
"Letters do exist, pirate princess", he rolled his eyes.
"Er...you are going to discuss about a war, on a letter? She asked. "No. He's going to come here. For celebrating the independence we got from Jarasandh, we have planned a fair in Anga where everyone would be invited", Karna said.
"Pandu putra, too", she smirked.
"Unfortunately", he added.
"Why do you hate them?" She asked surprised. "Why do you hate me?" He asked her back.
"I understood", she muttered.
"I should get some woods for cooking", Karna said looking around.
"I will leave you all on the soldiers care", he said.
"Aren't you scared that I might escape?" Digvija asked.
Karna looked at her. "Well...the opportunity I gave you, you won't want to miss it and even you if you try to escape, I will catch you", he winked.
Digvija felt her cold exterior breaking.
Karna went ahead to get the woods.
Urvi looked at Karn's retreating figure.
At first, she felt he was different but then Varnavrat conspiracy took place and she started hating him and accused him of being too blind in friendship and being interior to Arjun.
But, when she saw his valour when he was fighting the demons, she realised that how wrong she had been.
Even after taking her hostage for being an intruder, he never once misbehaved with her. He called her when her mother informed the royal family that she was ill and he had no intentions any other, than being dutiful towards her as she was close to Kunti, who was like a mother to him.
He has been so loving to his wives and balanced his friendship and kingdom duties. He fought Jarasandh, made many Sutas his ministers, who just thought that they were low born and he challenged the caste system.
He declared very bravely, that he doesn't care, his father is a charioteer, he won't take that job at any cost and follow his passion.
She didn't know if she would regret thinking the same again but she wanted to ask Arjun, regarding her feelings for Karn.
