Chapter Eighteen
Why?
This why was the word that Karna understood the plight of. This why was what became his goal in his fight for change. He was the best victim of this word.
Why? It was the question that he asked him and everyone else when his brother was murdered brutally by force swallowing molten gold and he was held tightly to not go and save his brother.
Tears that fell from his eyes made the sun hid itself from the kingdom of Hastinapura for two days as if even he was angry at what happened and was not going to shed light to the kingdom.
Karna felt his inner turmoil rising seeing Urvi crying. Years ago, it was him. Situations may be different but the pain was the same.
Humans exploiting humans was not a new thing for him.
Since childhood, he had seen and experienced it. Now, he felt quite habitual to the same and had left his innocence and humanity in some other place, he would never visit.
He was nothing but a stone hearted men, for all people, excluding a few, because all he wanted was a change and he would get it, no matter what.
Even if taking the wrong path gives him the right result.
"I brought food", he said and entered inside. Urvi wiped her tears quickly. "I don't want it. Thank you", she said bitterly. "Listen, you are already hungry since morning and look weak. I brought it behind Duryodhan's back so please eat it", he said gently.
"Urvi please", Supriya and Bhanumati requested as she didn't turn her gaze towards the food. Urvi sighed and took the plate. "Duryodhan will come to meet you in a while", Karna told. "I am going for my archery practice", Karna said to his wives who nodded at him and he went.
Karna stepped into the ground where the royals practiced archery. It was amusing that once he used to enter and get insulted by royals for being a charioteer's son and now he was holding the bow with rights and practicing.
He was thankful for that. He was thankful to Duryodhan. He wanted to prove his utmost loyalty for him. Duryodhan held a special place in his heart.
Karna took his bow in his hand and aimed the arrow.
However, he was not able to focus. The palace was suffocating him as he realised that he did the same injustice that happened to his family. Duryodhan forced someone and he stayed silent. When he shouldn't have.
He grumbled and ventured into the forests for peace.
He started practicing archery. Not even a single arrow went in any other direction. He kept striking his own arrows as every arrow went towards the target.
His ears perked up as he heard some sounds. These sounds were danger in the silent forest. He went in the direction with alert expressions on his face.
Karna stopped as he saw a very beautiful and huge vast garden. Why he never knew about that?
He got mesmerised by the beauty of nature and went in the forest, observing every flower. The sounds became clearer and he found the sounds to be of anklets.
He frowned and followed that sound, only to reach near a maiden. She looked really pretty.
"A girl in an isolated area like this? Is any settlement nearby?" He asked himself and his voice reached the girl who looked like a princess from her attire.
She turned around and saw one of the most handsome and charming man with a brightness in himself that awed her. He seemed to carry his own light. She smiled and approached him.
"Are you new here?" She asked. Karna got out of his trance and looked at her. "I just ventured here. The garden looks beautiful", he said awkwardly.
"It is", she gave a bright smile. "Who are you?" She asked staring at him intently making him shift his feet awkwardly. "I am...Angraj Karn", he introduced himself.
"Princess Barkha", she said. "Princess? I don't feel there is any kingdom here", he said and looked around. She laughed. "Yes. But, a monkey kingdom. I am a Vaanar princess. Our kingdom is nearby on the huge trees".
"Is this your flower garden?" He asked. She nodded. "I take flowers to make ornaments", she said. "Can you help me with it?" He asked. "I want to gift them to my wives", he said excitedly.
She smiled. Aww.
"Sure", she said. They both settled down to make them.
Meanwhile
Duryodhan had ordered Urvi to stay in the room. He had not come to talk to her as he was busy in Varnavrat preparations. He was in the royal court and trying to convince Arjun and Kunti to go.
"Why do they want mata there?" Arjun asked. "Because, they would want a queen like mother to be part of the veneration. I have a letter too", Duryodhan said.
Arjun frowned. He felt something really odd.
Duryodhan read the letter and Kunti sighed. "I would definitely like to go", she said softly as Arjun looked at his mother, unconvinced but nodded in agreement. What his mother says, goes. He won't argue.
Duryodhan and Shakuni smiled big listening to it. This is what they had wanted.
"Varnavrat awaits you", Duryodhan said and Arjun felt that he was going to regret this decision but he nodded, nevertheless. What could go wrong?
In royal politics and quest for throne, everything could go wrong.
Panchal Kingdom
Various offerings were being made to give in the Yagya. Drupad wanted to satisfy the gods anyhow. In the meanwhile, he gathered information on Karna and Arjuna. He wanted to know how suitable the grooms were. Even though, they were destined.
Both the warriors were so good that Drupad knew no one could compete them except them competing each other.
However, he was worried for his another daughter. The one who was supposed to marry Karna. Karna was married and he knew that then, his daughter would be Karn's another wife.
Arjun was not married and Drupad felt assured regarding that. He decided to seek help from Krishna once the Yagya gets completed.
Meanwhile
Karn looked at the ornaments happily.
"Thank you so much", he said. "I hope your wives will like it", Barkha said softly. "They will surely do. What can I give you in return as a sign of thanks?" He asked her.
"Meet me tomorrow", she said in a cold voice and went.
Karna was left confused. He went back in his kingdom and saw his wives were helping the maids with the stuff. "They agreed for Varnavrat, mitr", Duryodhan appeared, smiling. Karna's smile fell as he looked at him.
"They are going now only?" Karna asked gulping. "The stuff is getting ready. They will go tomorrow evening", Duryodhana said. Karna was left emotionally devastated as Duryodhana went to share this good news with his brothers who were out.
He couldn't go against Duryodhana in any case but how could he risk Kunti's life?
The three bags having flower ornaments slipped from his hands along with tears from his eyes.
