The List
- Chapter Seven -
Since you and Chase were on good terms, you both talked to one another a bit more and hung out too. Even though you two had your slight awkward moments, you both were slowly moving forward and you couldn't be more happier. As of now, you were on the couch casually talking to Bree, Kaz, and Oliver as Chase walked into the penthouse, holding a box.
"Check it out, guys. Mr. Davenport shipped us a box from Mission Creek." Chase explained, walking over to set the box into the table.
"As long as he's not in it, then yay!" Bree cheered as Chase opened the lid.
"Cool! It's some of our old technology." Chase stated, pulling out a device from the box.
"Hey, look, a Daven note." Kaz informed, taking the note as he read it aloud. "Dear EF, I'm converting the basement into a nursery for the new baby, so please keep this stuff in the penthouse for me."
"He's raising a baby in the basement?" Oliver asked. "That kid's gonna have some serious issues."
Bree shot Oliver a look as Kaz picked up a device from the box. "What's this?"
"The cyber cloak. It's a virtual body disguise. It can make you take on anyone's appearance." Chase explained. "One time, I got stuck looking like Bree, and I had to go to the school dance with a guy named Jake."
You couldn't help but smile, remembering the day Adam had showed you the memory of Chase slow dancing with the boy in the middle of the gym.
"Same thing happened to me." Oliver smiled. "Not the cyber cloak. Texting mishap. Long story. I'll tell you about it
later."
"And I'll tell you how I orchestrated the whole thing." Kaz chuckled as he picked up another device from the box. "Ooh, what's this?"
"Be careful. That's a memory wipe. It can erase minutes, hours, even years of a someone's life." Chase told Kaz.
Oliver stood. "Hey, if I used this on Skylar, maybe she'll forget all the stupid things I've said and wanna date me." Oliver smiled.
"It's a memory wipe, not a miracle maker." You stated as Kaz took the memory wipe.
"So how does this thing--" Kaz cut himself off as he pushed a button, making a flash go off. "Oh, what's this?" He asked, looking at the memory wipe, erasing his memory for a few seconds.
Chase then snatched the memory wipe out of his hands and threw it back into the box.
"See? This is why we can't have nice things." You pointed out as Bree nodded.
~~~~~
After about an hour or two, you went into the kitchenette to grab a water bottle but saw a pink flyer on the fridge. You plucked it off as you scanned the words on the page.
"Team meeting?" You asked to yourself.
'Yes, a team meeting. What did you expect, a pool party?'
'Don't be so sarcastic, leave her be.'
"What's that?" Bree asked, motioning to the flyer as she rummaged through the fridge.
"Guess there's gonna be a team meeting." You shrugged. "Come on, lets go."
You and Bree had went into the Hyper-lift and down into Mission Command where you saw the rest of the team minus Chase. Once you and Bree sat down, Chase came out from the Hyper-lift.
"Okay, team meeting time. Thank you all for coming." Chase stated as he walked over.
"Rounding up the Roundup Gang, I see sheriff." You smiled as everyone shot you a weird look. "Seriously, no one? Really? Would it kill you to watch a movie once in awhile?"
"We live here. Did you really have to post flyers in the kitchen?" Bree asked, showing the flyer she was holding.
"That was Oliver's idea." Chase informed.
"And I think the attendance speaks for itself." Oliver smiled as Chase patted his shoulder.
"Anyway, I have an update about our plan to warn all the superheroes about Roman and Riker." Chase stated. "By using Kaz's computer password from Mighty Med, we were able to access the encrypted superhero communications network."
"It's a secure way for superheroes to message each other without exposing themselves to the outside world." Oliver added in.
"It's also a great way to share recipes." Skylar added. "Red Assassin loved my banana muffins."
Chase lifed up a hologram for you all to see. "The network had gathered the locations all the remaining superheroes. It took some time since most of them use civilian cover identities to live undetected."
"Oh!" Kaz exclaimed as he spun around in his stool before standing up and walking over to Chase. "Which reminds me. I also have a civilian cover now. Secretly, I'm Kaz, a fire-powered superhero. But to the world, I'm Match Head, a mild-mannered regular Joe."
"So your civilian cover has a superhero name?" Bree asked.
"Superhero name? I know, like, four Match Heads." Kaz expalined.
Chase patted Kaz's shoulder as he pointed to his empty stool. "Have a seat." Kaz walked back to his seat as Chase continued. "My point is, now that the list is complete, we can warn all the superheroes if Roman and Riker are trying to hunt them down."
"Hey, Crossbow's on here." Skylar smiled, looking at the list. "She taught me everything I know about being a superhero. She was my first real friend on earth."
"Yeah, but I'm your first best friend, right?" Bree asked.
"No. Not even close." Skylar replied, shaking her head as she looked over at the hologram. "Look, she's living undercover right here in Centium City. I can't wait to see her. Its been years."
"Sorry, Skylar." Chase apologized as he shut down the hologram. "No meeting up with superheroes. We never know who's watching. We can't take the chance of exposing their true identity."
"But Crossbow's in danger." Skylar inquired.
"Every hero is in danger." Chase corrected. "That's why using the network is the safest option. We can get the word out to everybody at once, and confirm when they recive it."
"Okay. I guess I won't get to see my friend." Skylar stated as she looked at Bree. "But at least I still have you, right Bree?"
"Not even close." Bree stated as she stood, walking to the Hyper-lift as everyone stared.
"Shots fired." You smiled as you stood, following Bree. You turned to the team, walking backwards as you held up two fingers. "Peace out, pitches."
~~~~~
You were scooping out the room, trying to find your clock locket that you had set down before the team meeting in your room. You had hardly left without it and one of the reasons was because of this exact reason; losing it.
As you walked over to the bay window, lifting one of the pillows, you found it. "There you are!"
"Looking for something?" Bree asked, popping her head into the room.
"Yeah, just found it." You replied, pocketing the locket as you followed her out.
Chase was coming from the opposite side of the hall, and together you three walked downstairs spotting Kaz who was playing with action figures.
"Kaz, what are you doing?" Bree asked asked, as you three walked over to Kaz. "Put those down."
"Why? They're just dolls." Kaz shrugged.
"Action figures!" Chase exclaimed.
"Chase, I've been on that side of the argument. It's a losing battle. Lets just admit it: we like dolls." Kaz stated as he continued to play with them.
Chase snatched them away from Kaz and threw them into the box as Bree walked away. "Action figures!" Chase corrected before you both walked over to the couch.
Oliver and Skylar then walked into the penthouse as Skylar spoke. "Hey, did Crossbow get her message yet?"
"Um, no." Kaz answered as he stood. "But, a lot of other superheroes have. The system's working, and it is all thanks to Match Head."
Kaz patted his own back as Oliver spoke. "All you did was give Chase your password, which you only remembered because you copied my password so you didn't have to remember one."
"And it worked." Kaz confirmed as he sat in the blue chair.
"Something's wrong. She should've checked in by now." Skylar informed worriedly.
"Don't worry, Skylar, I'm sure Crossbow will get her message soon." Oliver assured her.
"What if she doesn't?" Skylar asked. "She's here in Centium City. Roman and Riker could be tracking her down just like they did with us."
"Look, I've done the math, and this is the best way to spread the word." Chase informed as he stood. "There's a ninety-eight percent chance that the message will get to her."
"Which means that there's a two percent chance that it won't." Skylar stated as she stepped up to Chase before turning around.
"Hold on." Kaz stopped her, doing the math mentally. "Yeah, that's right."
Skylar rolled her eyes as she walked away.
"Wow, Kaz. Didn't know it took you so long to figure that out." You stated as Bree smiled.
"Don't criticize my thinking." Kaz crossed his arms as you shook your head.
~~~~~
As the day went on into the night, you decided to walk into the underground tunnels. As you tapped your fingers to the beat of the music against your thigh, nodding your head slightly to the music that flowed through your earbuds, you slowed your pace to a halt, feeling that someone or something was behind. You crouched down, placing your fingertips to the dirt floor.
With your sensitive and upgraded bionic senses, you were able to feel a slight thudding; footsteps to be exact. Your hand went to your belt, your fingers wrapping around the dagger that you kept for protection. As the footsteps came closer, you spun around quickly ready to strike only to see Bree and Chase backed up in surprise, hands up in surrender.
"Geez, can you two not sneak up on me like that. I could've hurt you!" You exclaimed, tucking the dagger away into your belt.
"Sorry, we were heading back to Mission Command, you coming?" Bree asked as you nodded.
You three then began to talk casually as you headed back to Mission Command, spotting Kaz at the cyber desk.
"Kaz, why are you on the cyber desk?" Chase asked. "Or as you liked to call it, the shiny light up table."
"Oh, um, I just wanted to go over that superhero list one more time." Kaz stated.
"Why?" Chase asked.
"To make sure there's no typos." Kaz replied.
"Uh, you're worried about typos?" Bree asked. "The last time you texted me, you misspelled LOL."
"Just pull up the list." Kaz dictated.
"All right, chill out." Chase cautioned as he pulled up the list.
For some unknown reason, you kept getting an off vibe about Kaz. Something didn't seem right, as if your spidey senses were tingling (which you had joked about to Leo), which usually happened when you were around villains.
"He's probably just cranky 'cause we took away his dolls." Bree pouted playfully as Chase nodded in agreement.
"What does that even mean?" Kaz asked, making Chase stop.
Yeah, something wasn't right.
"Um, the dolls? The ones you were playing with earlier?" Bree gave him a look.
"Oh. Right, yeah." Kaz - well not Kaz agreed unsure. "Those were, um, very special to me. Now where's the list?"
"Kaz, what did those dolls look like?" You asked, slowly wrapping your fingers around your dagger.
He seemed to hesitate as Bree and Chase held up their hands defensively. "Who are you?"
Kaz then jumped over the cyber desk, turning into a black cloud as he landed on the other side of the cyber desk.
"Riker!" Chase spat.
"I'm taking that list." Riker sneered as he stepped forward. "The only questioned is, how much I have to hurt you to get it."
'Not by much. Throw the dagger.'
You quickly took out your dagger and threw it at Riker. The rear end of the dagger hit him directly in the forehead, knocking him unconscious.
Chase and Bree looked at you in stunned silence as you shrugged. "What?"
"What?! You could've killed him!" Bree exclaimed, motioning to Riker who was on the floor.
"But I didn't." You pointed out. "Okay, now it's interrogation time. Chase, tie him up. We have to find out where is other buddy is."
~~~~~
After interrogating Riker and threatening him severely, he cracked and explained that Roman was at the city park to stop Oliver and Skylar and their friend Crossbow as he would get the superhero list. After knocking him out once more (with a punch this time) Bree locked him in the industrial freezer as Chase went to fetch Kaz upstairs as you went to retrieve the cyber cloak. After explaining your plan and making Bree and Kaz disguise themselves, you all headed out.
~~~~~
You, Chase, and 'Bree' quickly ran towards the center of the park, seeing that Roman had Crossbow slung over his shoulder.
"Don't move!" Chase commanded as you held up your hands defensively.
"They must've followed me." 'Riker' informed.
"They'll be sorry they did." Roman gritted, tossing Crossbow aside like a rag doll. 'Riker' and Roman held onto each others arms, making Skylar hold Oliver back. "Stay back they're making their storm!"
"It's not working!" Roman exclaimed.
"Probably because I'm not Riker." 'Riker' stated, punching Roman in the side, making him buckle.
He held the side of his neck and undisguised himself, which was Bree.
"You just got cyber cloaked." Bree smiled.
'Bree' who stood beside you did the same, which was Kaz.
"That's right and I was Bree." Kaz explained.
"Why?" Oliver asked.
"I don't know, I just wanted to use the cyber cloak." Kaz admitted.
Roman stood and held Kaz by the collar of his shirt. "Where's my brother?"
"In an industrial freezer so he can't shape-shift his way out." Bree explained as Kaz slapped Roman's hand away.
You and the team surrounded Roman as Chase spoke. "Give it up, Roman. You've been outsmarted. Now you're outnumbered."
Roman then did a back flip and grasped Crossbow tightly, pulling her up to her feet, lighting up a static ball. "This is interesting. How about a trade?"
"Crossbow for your brother." Kaz offered.
"No. Crossbow for my brother and the list." Roman implored as he held the static ball higher to Crossbow threatening.
"That's not a fair trade." Oliver commented.
"Yeah, 'cause up to this point, he seemed like such an honorable guy." Bree told Oliver sarcastically.
"Don't do it." Crossbow stated.
"That's my offer. You take it, or say goodbye to Crossbow forever." Roman stated, ready to blast Crossbow.
"Stop! We'll take the deal!" Skylar agreed.
"Skylar, please don't." Crossbow begged.
"If Roman and Riker get that list, they'll take out every superhero on it." Kaz told Skylar.
"We'll find a way to stop them." Skylar assured.
"And what if we can't?" Chase asked. "You're putting the life of one hero over the rest."
"I just can't let her die." Skylar stated. "If she was your friend, you'd take the deal."
"She's right." Bree agreed. "I'll get Riker and the list."
Bree was off and then back within moments with Riker and the list.
"Good choice. Let Riker go." Roman ordered. Bree and Chase shoved Riker forward. "Now the list."
"Crossbow first." Bree stated.
"Same time." Roman informed.
"Don't do it." Crossbow shook her head as she looked at Skylar. "Skylar, you've done all you could to protect me. Just...keep the other heroes safe."
"No. I'm not just gonna let you die." Skylar argued as she took the list form Bree and handed it over to Roman.
Roman shoved Crossbow forward, making Kaz catch her.
"This is it!" Roman exclaimed. "Everything we need to wipe out the rest of these pathetic heroes. You keep this safe."
Roman tossed the list to Riker, which Crossbow quickly activated her crossbow and shot an arrow at the list, destroying it in midair.
"NO!" Roman quickly blasted Crossbow, making her fly backwards and land on the ground, making you all run to her aid.
She wheezed and gasped for air, trying to speak to you all. "Don't...let them...win."
Crossbow had coughed her last breath before her head fell limp to the side.
"One superhero down, and now it's time to exterminate the rest." Roman informed, as Skylar stood. "List or no list."
Skylar had lunged forward, holding the brothers' wrists as she flipped backwards, hitting them and causing them to fly backwards and land on the ground. As the brothers held hands, Skylar had released an orange bast at them.
"Forget this!" Riker shouted as he stood. "I'm out!"
Riker had shifted into a crow and flew off as Roman called after him. "Riker! Get back here you coward!" Roman the stood as he looked at you all. "This...this isn't over!"
As Roman flew off, Skylar crouched down as Chase spoke. "Come on. We have to get her out of here."
You all picked up Crossbow and carried her back to the penthouse.
~~~~~
When you all got back, you all placed her onto the cyber desk which Skylar was leaning on, mourning the loss of her friend. She wasn't doing so good.
Bree stepped forward towards Skylar. "Crossbow sacrificed herself so others could live. That makes her a true hero."
"She's gone...and it's all my fault." Skylar admitted in a murmur.
"Nobody blames you." Chase shook his head.
"Well you should." Skylar stated. "I messed everything up."
"No." Oliver stated as he walked towards Skylar. "I'm the one who offered to take you to Crossbow. I couldn't stand to see you hurting."
"Thanks Oliver." Skylar nodded in appreciation. "But I started this. Now I have to live with it."
"Wait a minute." Kaz started. "Crossbow's gloves are powered by the horolograin pearls, right?"
"Just like the self-regeneration paddles at Mighty Med." Oliver explained, realization dawning on his face.
"Exactly. So maybe we can use the energy from Crossbow's gloves to repair the damage to her body." Kaz explained motioning to Crossbow.
"We just need to direct the energy into her body instead of away from it." Oliver added.
"That's a great idea!" Skylar exclaimed as Kaz and Oliver slid off Crossbow's gloves.
"Turn them inside out." Kaz instructed as Oliver did so, putting the glove back on Crossbow.
You all waited a few moments before her body shook and convulsed, her skin turning orange. Her body continued like this for a few more minutes before it stopped completely. You all held in a waiting breath, that was until Crossbow sat up gasping for air.
Bree's jaw dropped as the others celebrated. "I don't believe it. It worked!"
You couldn't help but smile as Chase spoke. "So they brought her back to life by turning her gloves inside out." Chase stated, his brows furrowed in confusion. "Superheroes. I give up!"
"Hey, she's alive and that's all that matters." You shrugged a shoulder, smiling slightly at the others who were talking among themselves.
"Exactly." Bree agreed.
~~~~~
After that, Skylar, Oliver, and Kaz took Crossbow up to the penthouse to get her settled in for the night as you, Bree, and Chase stayed behind. Chase had decided to send the superheroes another message, warning them about Roman and Riker. Once that was done you three made your way back up into the penthouse.
"Good news." Chase stated as you and Bree followed him out of the Hyper-lift. "All of the superheroes had received our encrypted message. The only bad news is that Roman and Riker are still out there, and something tells me they're not giving up."
You knew that they weren't, and by that you knew that they were going to plan something bigger. You had no idea what, but only time would tell.
