Holding Out for a Hero
- Chapter Two -
It's been a few days and luckily the bump on the back of your head went away. Although, it's been a few days, you still haven't quite adjusted to living at the tower, you felt as if you were basically on your own. You snuck out at night to explore the city, but you never stayed out too long.
As of now, while you were grabbing a water bottle from the fridge, as Kaz yawned, shooting out a fireball, igniting the table on fire. Chase was quick to act, grabbing the extinguisher to put out the flames as Mr. Davenport ran down the steps.
"I heard an explosion. What happened?" Mr. Davenport asked. "Did we get attached by shape-shifters again?"
You scrunched your nose in disgust, seeing Mr. Davenport wearing a tight outfit.
"No, but could you cover up? I'm seeing a few too many shape shifting over there." Chase stated, throwing a blanket to Mr. Davenport as he asked what happened.
"I'm guessing a combination of gravity and middle age." Kaz responded as Mr. Davenport rolled his eyes.
"To that." Mr. Davenport pointed to the table
"Oh, well, um, Oliver and Chase were talking about science." Kaz stated as he continued. "I got bored. I yawned, um, something flew out of my mouth, and vàla, I set the table on fire."
"He found another superpower. It's a fire grenade." Oliver informed, motioning to the table.
"Fire gernade? That's lame. I'm calling it my yawn bomb." Kaz explained, shrugging sheepishly.
"Yeah, 'cause that's so much better." Oliver replied sarcastically as he walked over towards you in the kitchen area.
"So, wait, you just discovered something you didn't even know you had?" Chase asked Kaz. "How many superpowers were in the space rock?"
"That's tough to say. I mean, it didn't really come with a manual, and even if it did, I probably wouldn't read it." Kaz explained as he sat on the couch.
"This is just like you guys when you unlock new bionic abilities." Mr. Davenport pointed out.
"Oh, yeah, except that our abilities came from a highly advance infrastructure and theirs comes from a magic witch pebble. Wooo~" Chase wiggled his fingers as if he were a witch.
Oliver shot Chase an offended look, which you couldn't help but smile faintly as Mr. Davenport spoke. "Either way, this is a great opportunity for the team. We can teach them to hone their abilities the way I trained you."
"Superhero school. That sounds like fun." Oliver smiled.
"School? Boring." Kaz yawned, as a fireball shot out of his mouth and hit the umbrella stand by the door.
Chase let out a squeak as he ran over with the fire extinguisher and put out the fire.
"Well, that's the last time that umbrella stand attacks us." Kaz chuckled as you rolled your eyes.
"Well let's get to it. [Name] you coming?" Mr. Davenport asked, looking at you.
"Nah, school isn't really my thing." You declined as you sipped your water bottle.
The boys then headed down to Mission Command as you stayed put in the kitchen, scrolling through your phone mindlessly. Just then, Skylar and Bree walked in from Mission Command.
"Did you hear about the superhero school?" Bree asked as Skylar walked out to the terrance.
"Yeah, wasn't really interested." You replied, shrugging one shoulder.
"Skylar and I are gonna hang out on the terrance, come join us." Bree stated, nodding toward the terrance.
"In a bit." You said, as she nodded and walked out.
You sighed as you set your phone down, rubbing your eyes. You then moved away from the counter, throwing your water bottle in the recycling bin as you stuffed your phone in your back pocket, walking over to the terrance to see Bree and Skylar standing.
"This is gonna be so great. You're like the sister I've never had." Bree told Skylar, as Skylar looked at her in awe. "I mean, Chase acts like an old lady, but it's not the same."
"Wait, you think of me as a sister?" Skylar asked Bree.
"Of course I do. Bring it in." Bree smiled, arms streached out to hug her.
Your eyebrows shot up as Skylar tripped Bree to the floor, grabbing her ankles and holding her in a leg lock.
"What are you doing?!" Bree asked in bewilderment.
"Having fun with my new sis." Skylar smiled as pulled Bree's legs backwards, making her bones pop. "Aww. Your tiny bone pops are adorable."
You quickly then turned around, grabbing your black leather jacket that laid on the couch as you quickly made your way to the door. There was no way you were staying when Skylar was going to come after you next, asking if you considered her as a sister.
You had no idea what went up in Skylar's planet, and you weren't sticking around to find out.
~~~~~
You explored around the city a bit, making a mental map of the places that were around. Now that you were in a new city, you wanted to get to know your way around since you'll be living at the tower for lord knows how long. Plus, you got to be alone and think to yourself.
You only wandered a few blocks away from the tower, not straying to far away so you wouldn't get lost. You went into a few shops, not too many. You did find a few small nick-nacks that peaked your interest. Once you were satisfied, you headed back to the tower.
~~~~~
As you slid the keycard in the slot, making the door slide open, you looked up to see Mr. Davenport being thrown off over the ledge of the terrance by some whirlwind that Oliver created.
You dropped your bags and ran forward on instinct, peering over the ledge as Kaz and Chase did the same.
Kaz turned to look at Oliver. "That was really good, bud...until the last part!"
"Mr. Davenport, are you okay?" You asked, looking down at him.
"Help! I'm handing on by a hair!" Mr. Davenport exclaimed. "My luscious full bodied hair!" He looked down briefly then back up at you all. "HELP ME!"
"Hang on, Mr. Davenport!" Kaz exclaimed, as he looked at you, Chase, and Oliver. "Speaking of which, what is he hanging onto?"
"Uh, that would be a Daven-head." Chase replied.
"He put a giant bust of his own head on the building?" Oliver asked, quirking a brow.
"No. The Daven-head came first. He built the tower to support it." Chase answered as if it were the most common sense thing in the world.
"I knew he had a big head, but I never thought it would save his life." Kaz chuckled, as your lips twitched upwards briefly.
"I heard that, new guy!" Mr. Davenport exclaimed.
"Hey, Oliver." Kaz stated. "I think we should change the name of youe Cyclone Fingers to Irresponsible Wind of Doom."
"I thought it was perfected, and so did he." Oliver pointed at Chase.
"Woah, don't rope me into this. I'm still trying to figure out you super freaks." Chase pointed to Oliver and Kaz.
You bit your tongue as you turned to face the boys fully. "Look, you three need to stop--"
You got cut off by Mr. Davenport. "Sorry to interrupt, but could one of you heroes get down here and save me?!"
"Can you pull yourself to the top of the head?" Chase asked, as you all looked down at Mr. Davenport.
"I can't get a foot hold. It's too slippery. My face is too perfect." Mr. Davenport explained.
"Okay, I'll be right down." Chase informed, running inside only to stop quickly. "Wait, what am I saying? You two can fly. Get down there and save him." Chase then looked at Kaz. "On a second thought, why don't you go save him?"
"Why not me?" Oliver asked.
"No offense, but I don't trust you with your own life." Chase told him bluntly. "But if Mr. Davenport needs a cold beverage, you'll be the first person I call."
"I got this." Kaz stated, ready to jump as Oliver stopped him.
"No, I got this." Oliver stated.
"Actually, I can still hear you and my votes on Kaz, or even [Name] or Chase even though they can't fly." Mr. Davenport explained.
You couldn't help but smile, knowing that Mr. Davenport actually trusted you with his life.
"Don't worry, Mr. Davenport! I'm coming to save you!" Oliver exclaimed as he jumped over the ledge, shrieking as he landed on the Daven-head. "Still working on the landings. You know what's weird? You both look equally disappointed in me."
"We are." Mr. Davenport glared at Oliver.
As time ticked by, with Mr. Davenport and Oliver exchanging words, your patience began to slightly waver seeing that Oliver wasn't doing anything.
"Why isn't Oliver saving him?" You asked, looking down at Oliver and Mr. Davenport.
"I don't know, I better go fly down there and get him." Kaz stated, ready to jump as Chase stopped him.
"Wait, don't!" Chase stated.
"Ah, you inherit the old man's building and bank account if he splats? Say no more." Kaz nodded, walking away.
"No." Chase replied as he walked over to Kaz. "Oliver needs to save Mr. Davenport himself. The reason he's having trouble with his powers is because he's insecure. You're outshining him and it's getting into his head."
"Wait. Okay, so he's intimidated because because I'm so good at it?" Kaz asked Chase as he said yes. "Oh, well, you know, I hate to say it, but I may need another superpower just to rain in all this awesome."
You rolled your eyes, peering down at Mr. Davenport and Oliver as Chase spoke. "The more you succeed, the more it shines a light on the fact that Oliver is struggling. The only way for him to get over that is to make him feel like he can do it. So we're gonna let save Mr. Davenport."
"Well, alrighty then. Let's go make some popcorn and see how this trainwreck turns out." Kaz chuckled as he went inside, leaving you and Chase.
Since you still felt uncomfortable around Chase, you kept your eyes peered over the ledge. You didn't really care about what they were talking about, but you still kept your eye on them for two reasons: 1) You wanted to make sure that they didn't die, and 2) You didn't want to interact with Chase. Luckily, Kaz came back with a bucket of popcorn. He and Chase sat on the ledge, as you stood in the middle, watching as Oliver called for help.
"I'm sorry, buddy. There's no way I could carry both of you." Kaz replied as he shoved popcorn in his mouth.
"Nice." Chase complimented. "That excuse sounds pretty believable."
"Actually, it's the truth." Kaz chuckled. "I just realized Oliver's the only one with super strength. I couldn't save him if I wanted to."
Chase sat up straighter as he peered over the ledge. "Wait, so Mr. Davenport's life is really in Oliver's hands?"
"Yeah. His wet, slippery, ice cubey hands." Kaz chuckled as Chase snatched the bucket and began to shove popcorn in his mouth.
"And now you decide to tell us?" You asked, as Kaz shrugged.
You then backed away from the ledge, pacing back and forth until you heard Oliver and Mr. Davenport's shrieks. You ran back over to the ledge, seeing Oliver holding Mr. Davenport as he flew upwards. You quickly moved away as they both crashed onto the terrance floor.
"Hey, I did it!" Oliver exclaimed as he stood up. "I'm a hero!"
"Yeah, but, uh, next time you save a guy, pick a better hand hold." Mr. Davenport suggested, whincing as he moved around.
"Sorry. It was tough to get a grip with all your shifting shapes." Oliver explained, motioning to Mr. Davenport's body.
"I can't believe he came through." Kaz smiled, as Oliver let out an offended hey. "Oh, sorry, I mean, uh...yeah I can't believe you came through."
"Just out of curiosity, what was your backup plan in case Oliver here didn't save me?" Mr. Davenport asked.
"Preserve your real Daven-head in the name of science." Chase smiled, shrugging one shoulder.
"I was, uh, gonna get a spatula and meet you down at the sidewalk." Kaz chuckled.
Mr. Davenport forced a laugh only to quickly sober up. "Hilarious. I'm leaving everything to Bree."
As Mr. Davenport walked inside, you quickly followed.
~~~~~
Later on, Bree wanted to go out and walked a couple of blocks just to take a look around the city. So you and the rest of the team went out for about an hour or so.
When you all came back, you saw that Mr. Davenport was wearing that one tight outfit with a clay mask on his face.
You quickly covered your eyes as you spoke dramatically. "Oh, my eyes! Oh, my innocent eyes!"
"Hey, we all know that you are far from innocent." Mr. Davenport pointed out as you uncovered your eyes.
"I'm gonna Daven-puke." Bree stated as Mr. Davenport laughed sarcastically. "What's going on?"
"He's making a mold of my face to replace the broken Daven-head." Mr. Davenport explained, as you rolled your eyes and headed upstairs to lock yourself in your room to read and escape to another reality.
