Chapter 29
The young woman wasn't sure what time she had fallen back asleep. Maybe it had been hours or mere minutes; she couldn't remember.
When she had woken up, her head was pounding and her eyes refused to open fully. Still, she could see her friends. The three of them had all found places in her room to sleep.
Craig was sleeping at the edge of the bed, near Evanee's feet. Jonathan was sleeping on the air mattress on the floor and Evan. She paused for a moment. Evan wasn't in sight. She was sure she had seen him.
"You okay there?" She heard. It was only then that she realized that the Canadian boy was laying down beside her. She was tucked comfortably under his arm.
"Yeah," she breathed out. "My head hurts a bit, but I'll be fine."
He stretched a bit before getting up from the bed. "I'll be right back, okay? You're fine with Advil?"
Evanee nodded. "Thanks."
"No problem."
With that, Evan was off to the store and the young woman got up to go to the bathroom. The sight of her own face had her questioning if she was the same person.
Her raven black hair was a bit curly and ruffled at the top of her head. Her green eyes looked dull and puffy. Tears still stained her cheeks. She despised it. She looked weak, vulnerable. Everything she didn't want to be.
Quickly, she washed her face, brushed her teeth, and brushed her hair. Evanee also noticed that her hair was getting longer. She would have to cut it soon.
Or maybe she should let it grow out like before. She was unsure.
By the time she went back to the guest room, Craig had disappeared. Jonathan was still sleeping on the mattress with his mouth wide open and soft snores escaping him.
"Jon? Jon?" Evanee said, shaking him lightly.
She yelped as she was pulled down and fell on top of the mattress.
"You're cuddly," Jonathan mumbled tiredly, clutching onto her.
"And you're a butt. It's time to get up," she pulled away from Jonathan's hug and got up again.
"Five more minutes."
Evanee left him to sleep for a bit more and went downstairs to see Craig rummaging through the bag he brought.
"What are you looking for?"
"My toothbrush," Craig answered, pulling something out of the bag. "Here it is. Now where's my underwear?"
Evanee smiled at him, which he returned.
"I like seeing you smile, Evanee. You deserve to be happy."
"Thank you. Now go get ready and wake Jonathan up. We should go out for breakfast."
Craig nodded and walked upstairs. A few minutes into her saddened daydream, there was a knock at the front door and Evanee let Evan inside.
"I got Advil and I also know it's that time of the month so I bought ice cream and pads. I wasn't sure if I should have bought tampons but pads were a safer bet, you know?"
Evanee smiled and took the plastic bags from his hands. "Thank you, Evan. Go get changed. We're going out for breakfast."
Whilst her three friends got ready, Evanee put the ice cream in the freezer and prepared a glass of water. Her headache had dulled slightly, but from how it originally was, that wasn't much. She took the Advil and put it away in one of the cabinets, then went to lay on the couch.
"Ready?" Evan asked, walking down the stairs.
"Yeah," she answered, seeing the other two walking down the stairs as well. The four of them left the house and sat in the car for a moment.
"Where are we eating?"
"I can treat us out to IHOP," Evanee suggested.
The boys looked a bit reluctant, obviously unsure if they should let her pay, but Evanee then insisted so they set off.
Thankfully, the local IHOP wasn't crowded and they easily found a booth. Evanee sat closest to the window with Craig sitting beside her and Jonathan sitting across from her.
Still very reluctant, the boys tried to order the cheapest meal, but Evanee had changed it for each of them.
"We'll have two Colorado omelettes, a spinach&mushroom omelette, and three New York Cheescake pancakes."
With no further arguments, they added sides and ordered their drinks.
"We can pitch in," Evan suggested.
"It's fine, honestly. You guys are here for me anyways."
"Well, how did you even know what we wanted? I didn't even know what I wanted," Craig said with a raised brow.
The four of them laughed a bit. "I guess I know you guys a bit too much. Are you guys okay with staying in the waiting area when we go to the hospital later?"
A laugh escaped Evanee as she saw the three boys nod vigorously, all trying to show their support.
"Thank you."
"Anything for you, Evanee," they each said simultaneously.
They stared at each other for the longest time, wondering how that worked out and in seconds, their laughs had Evanee smiling.
She adored moments like these. She cherished them completely, but she couldn't help but think that one day that this would all end. One day everyone would leave and she'd be alone again. They'd leave her like Gemma had, like her parents had done.
Tears formed in her eyes, but she refused to cry there. She blinked the tears away and bit at the inside of her cheek. This was a time to cherish and a smile once again graced her lips as she saw her friends laughing.
------------------
"That was delicious. Really wished you had let us pay," Craig said, patting his stomach.
"Too late now. You guys just stay here," Evanee said, doing her best to muster up a bright smile.
She left them in the waiting area and went up the elevator to Gemma's room. No one was around so she walked in and froze when there was no one there.
"No. No, no," she cried out. Everything hurt again. This wasn't happening. Gemma wasn't gone.
She rushed out of the room and her eyes searched the empty hall desperately. She began running. She didn't know where to, but she ran down endless halls, her steps echoing.
Then she bumped into someone and fell back.
"Drew?"
His eyes were red and his face was pale. The bags under his eyes indicated he hadn't slept soundly.
"Evanee. God, I've been trying to call you ever since this morning. I saw the guys downstairs and they told me you were up here."
"Gemma wasn't in her room. She's not?" The young woman couldn't even finish her sentence.
His eyes stared at her solemnly. "It's complicated, Evanee. I'm so sorry."
She stared at him, her mind in a swirl of confusion and grief. Complicated didn't even begin to describe the events that have happened.
"Drew, what happened?"
"Just follow me."
The two of them walked back to the elevator and went down a few floors, taking them in front of a regular room. Evanee stood in front of the windows, wondering how things could get even more complicated.
And then her eyes traveled to Gemma. She was in a bed, still connected to different wires and other things, but she was alive. Her eyes were open and she was talking to a doctor beside her.
Evanee wanted nothing more than to run in there and hug her, but Drew had stopped her.
"Evanee, you can't go in there."
"Why?"
"Her doctor told me that she would recover. It would take a long time, but she'll get better. The problem is that the original damage to her brain did something else. She doesn't remember a lot of things from the past."
"She has to remember me," Evanee breathed out. "She has to."
"Her doctor made me talk to her so that I could try to figure out what she remembered. She remembered me, but only recent memories that happened in the past few weeks. I'm sorry, Evanee, but I brought your name up and she had no clue who you were."
Evanee was shaking. She should be happy. Gemma was alive. She was going to get better, but her heart tugged. This wasn't her miracle. This was a nightmare.
All the memories they had shared. The secrets between them was now only alive in Evanee's memory. She'd question if they ever happened. She'd wonder if she could ever share those secrets again.
And again, the young woman was reminded that miracles never happened, not for her.

The ending of this was a bit crappy since my dad hasn't paid for the wifi and it might turn off soon, so I had to get this chapter done as soon as possible. Thank you all for being so patient and for being involved.
I honestly can't describe how much I adore reading comments. Votes are great too, but I love comments. I try to check every comment and I don't respond to all of them, but know that I do make an effort to read almost every comment. Even when you comment on old books and previous chapters.
So comment how you feel about everything, predictions, or suggestions and try to make it a long and descriptive cause those are my favorite. Vote and comment
And as always I hope ye enjoyed(:)
