Chapter 28
Craig was in the kitchen. After Evanee mentioned that she hadn't really eaten anything, he was quick to cook.
Meanwhile, Jonathan had taken out the couch cushions so that the bed was revealed. He set it up properly and was happy to see that Gemma hadn't really changed much about the house. He found the extra blankets and pillows where they usually were when he was younger.
That left Evan to walk across the street and greet his mother, also asking if he could borrow the inflatable mattress in the attic. He explained the entire situation to his mom while he was there and she insisted that she would momentarily visit.
Evanee was upstairs, tending to her hand. She used a thin ice pack and put it on her knuckles, bandaging around her hand and wrapping it up to her wrist so it was secure. When she came back downstairs, she froze.
"Laila," she said, surprised. The last time she saw Evan's mom was when she and Evan were still dating.
The older woman immediately hugged Evanee, tears coming to her eyes. "I'm so sorry, Evanee."
The raven haired girl hugged her back slowly. "Thank you. It's been forever."
Laila let go and wiped at her eyes. "It has. I'll leave you all here. If you ever, and I mean ever, need anything, I'm always here."
Evanee said goodbye and Evan walked his mom back to the house.
"You were on a first name basis with his mom?" Craig asked from the kitchen.
She nodded. "Weird, right?"
Everything continued. Craig was still in the kitchen while Evanee helped Jonathan inflate the mattress with an air pump.
The continued to work as Evan came back in and locked the door. He took Evanee's place and helped Jonathan with the mattress, while Evanee went to help Craig out in the kitchen.
"Smells good? What'd you find?"
"Gemma had bacon, avocados, hamburger patties, buns, and other vegetables so I'm making us bacon avocado burgers. The food will be done in fifteen minutes. Go lie down for now. I've got it under control here."
Evanee pat his back. "Thanks, Craig."
"Anything for you."
The two of them heard a quiet mutter and they looked in the direction of the mattress, only to see Evan there. He looked at Craig for a moment and rolled his eyes.
"Yes, Evan?"
"Oh, nothing. Just inflating this mattress. Anything for you, Evanee," Evan said sarcastically.
"I thought you two were over this," the raven haired girl sighed, going upstairs to change into pajamas since she had gone to sleep in her regular clothes earlier.
Knowing that there were three boys downstairs, she wore a baggy white muscle shirt and black sweatpants. In the middle of changing, the door creaked open and Evanee shrieked.
"Hi?"
"Get out, Jon!" Evanee covered her chest and turned around so that her back was facing the open door.
She heard the door close and sighed in relief, locking it this time. She had to admit that it was her fault for being so idiotic as to not lock her door.
The green eyed girl finished changing and went downstairs. Jonathan looked at her when she came down but immediately looked away in embarrassment.
"Okay, what just happened?" Craig asked.
"What?"
"Jonathan doesn't get embarrassed easily and especially just by Evanee coming downstairs, don't you think Evan?"
The Canadian boy nodded, eyeing Jonathan.
Jonathan looked down at his feet. "Nothing. It was nothing."
"It was honestly nothing," Evanee repeated.
Craig and Evan shared a look, then Evan spoke up, "tackle?"
"Tackle."
The two boys charged for Jonathan, falling onto him and then falling hard onto the inflatable mattress. Since Evan hadn't sealed the opening where he had been pumping air into the mattress, the air quickly seeped out as the three boys sat on it.
"I guess I have to start all over," Evan groaned.
"I am surrounded by idiots," Evanee muttered, thankful no one had heard her.
Craig had quickly gone back to the kitchen and the smell of freshly cooked bacon and patties had soon spread to the living room.
"So, what do you want to do, Ducky?"
"Stop calling me that. I just want to eat and then sleep, okay?"
Jonathan and Evan nodded understandingly as Craig came into the living room with a tray of eight average sized burgers.
"I figured one wouldn't be enough and there was extra food so I made two for each of us," Craig said, sitting down.
"How was ComicCon?" Jonathan asked.
"Okay for the most part, but definitely not as great as being here," Craig answered, glancing at Evanee, which only resulted with Evan rolling his eyes again.
They didn't talk much as they finished their food, but they all made a point to thank Craig for the food; Jonathan especially since he was an enthusiastic bacon lover.
Once they were all finished and everything was cleaned up, an awkward silence overcame them.
There was a very important reason why Craig had originally came, but bringing it up with the other two around didn't feel right
"We should all get some rest," Evanee said softly, getting up. "I'll be upstairs if any of you need me."
None of them said anything as she went up to her old bedroom. She was more than exhausted, especially now with the boys in the house, but sleep didn't come easy.
Maybe it had been minutes or seconds or even hours of Evanee tossing and turning in her bed. She desperately ached for sleep, but her eyes never seemed to stay shut for long.
Guilt flooded her mind. She missed Gemma. As horrible as it was, she accepted her death. She accepted the fact that Gemma was bound to die. The statistics of her surviving the physically trauma she had experienced was insanely low. Evanee knew better than to get her hopes up, but that didn't stop the pain.
It didn't stop the tears that flowed continuously. It didn't stop the horrible aching in her heart.
I can't make it without Gemma
Even when Gemma wasn't there, which was a lot of the time back in LA, Evanee knew she still always supported her. That would never change. Gemma's love would never waver and Evanee took that for granted because Gemma was always there.
As a young child, she immediately assumed Gemma would always be there for her. She always was, even when her parents were still alive.
"Evs?"
The raven haired girl tried to swallow her sons as best she could. "Yes?"
"We can hear you crying from downstairs," Jonathan said quietly, walking over to the bed. "You'll be okay."
She sat up and saw Jonathan, Craig, and Evan in her room.
"We're all here for you," Craig continued.
"Always," Evan stated, taking a seat next to her on her bed and hugging her.
For a moment, her chest became tighter. How did she ever deserve people like this in her life? How did she ever deserve someone like Gemma?
She had no clue, but one thing was for certain; all important people always leave.
---------------------
I'm sorry, honestly so sorry. This was more of a tiny filler chapter since I haven't been able to write as much lately.
Schools starting in a week and I still have a Summer assignment I haven't finished and I've also been busy with registration and Link Crew, as well as last minute vacations.
Also, very sorry if this chapter sucked. I'm writing at one in the morning but this probably won't be published until noon later today. Vote and comment what you think will happen to Gemma and the boys
And as always I hope ye enjoyed(:)
