-------------------
After usual visitation hours, only one person could stay in Gemma's hospital room.
Evanee couldn't stand an entire night of the steady beats of a monitor or seeing her aunt in such a state. She insisted that Drew stay with her, which he greatly appreciated. She'd be staying at Gemma's house.
The drive there was reminiscent. Evanee was even further buried in the constant dread that she felt when she passed her old high school. They hadn't made any new renovations so it looked exactly how it had when she had come there as a freshman.
Evanee had also passed the ice skating rink from New Year's Day so many years ago. It was no longer lit up and she was sad to see that it was shutting down. Her drive also showed the park she and David had hung out at when they were younger. A small smile crossed her lips to see the swings were still intact, lit up by the dim streetlight.
How much she wished that those times were still here. Even if it wasn't perfect, being a teenager again was a better option than being here as an adult.
She finally pulled into the driveway and stared at the house. It didn't look that different. Gemma had put up a few new decorations by the door, but other than that, it was still home.
With the keys that Drew gave her, she opened the front door. Gemma hadn't changed it. She didn't change the color of the walls, the piano, the bean bags. Everything was still here. Evanee locked the door and brought her bags upstairs, into her old bedroom.
Though, it wasn't exactly hers. It was a guest bedroom now. Gemma had kept the white painted walls, but had replaced her bed with something smaller and instead of her desk against the wall, there was a white cabinet. It was empty when she checked it, so she unpacked all of her clothing and other belongings into there.
Before she did anything else, she called her boss, informing her of Evanee's latest whereabouts. The head nurse was very kind so she sent her deepest gratitude and would find someone to cover for Evanee.
She had no other texts or calls and truthfully, she didn't want to talk to anyone right now. The young woman was too busy wallowing in sadness.
She abandoned her aunt when she went to college. She abandoned her aunt when she tried to kill herself. She abandoned her aunt when she moved to LA and rarely talked to her.
After all these years of Gemma taking care of her and loving her, Evanee repaid her by abandoning her.
It was safe to say she hated herself right now. She despised everything she had done in the past few months and wished that she could have spent more time with Gemma.
In a single second, Evanee's fist collided with the wall. All the sadness she felt had converted into anger and that anger was solely directed towards herself.
Thankfully her hand wasn't bleeding, but there was a dent in the wall and she had a barely noticeable bruise on her knuckles. It would most likely become a lot more visible later on.
Gemma would've been a ball of fiery rage right now if she had walked in, but there was no chance of that happening. Evanee wished for that to happen.
Suddenly, Evanee's phone rang and she used her left hand to answer it.
"What's up?"
"Hey, Evanee," Craig greeted happily. "Just wanted to check in and see how you're doing. San Diego has been pretty fun. I can't wait to take you here someday."
That lifted Evanee's spirits up just a tiny bit.
"Craig-"
It was if he had known instantly. As soon as she said his name, his tone changed.
"Evanee, what happened?" He asked. "Are you okay?"
"How'd you even know?"
"I live with you, Evanee. It's not hard to tell when something is wrong. Should I come home?"
The raven haired girl bit her lip. "No, you don't have to do that. I'm at Gemma's place right now. She's in the hospital and Drew decided to stay with her there so I'm sleeping here for a few days."
There was silence on the other end for a moment and Evanee was unsure if he had even heard her.
"I'm coming, okay? I'll be there as soon as I pack my stuff."
"Craig, no. This is ComicCon. You have to be there. You've been planning for this."
"You're not changing my mind, Evanee. I'm already packing. Your safety is my main priority and I know that you shouldn't be alone. I'll be there in like five hours."
This seemed crazy and even more stressful. Craig had been planning for this for what seemed like weeks. She couldn't let him leave.
With a heavy sigh, Evanee spoke up, "Craig, I'll be fine. I know how much ComicCon means to you-"
"But you don't know how much you mean to me, Evanee. Be safe until I get there, please."
With that, he hung up and Evanee went back to concentrating on her pulsing hand. She ran downstairs and found an ice pack in the freezer, wrapped it in a small towel, and placed it on her right hand.
This wasn't fair to Craig in the slightest. Evanee did her best to convince herself that it was Craig's choice, but she couldn't help but feel guilty.
Everything was going smoothly for the past few weeks as well. It was only now that Evanee felt the weight of the world toppling down on her. Every minor problem, every major problem, everything. It seemed to come back and add onto the distress she was already experiencing.
She wanted to punch something again, but restricted herself. Craig would be getting there around midnight, five hours from now. A sudden shudder moved through her body. She needed him to be safe.
He was going to be driving five hours straight probably with no prior sleep. Evanee couldn't imagine what she'd do if something would have happened to Craig.
With the ice pack still on her hand, Evanee went back upstairs to sleep. She never really got to eat most of her breakfast and had skipped out on getting food for the rest of the day, but she still didn't feel hungry in the slightest bit.
The green eyed girl didn't bother changing from the pajamas she was wearing since this morning. Her body was barely functioning and moved slowly as she climbed into bed and buried herself in the covers. It wasn't long before she fell asleep.
-----------------------
The doorbell rang.
Evanee's eyes slowly opened. Her hand mindlessly reached for her phone under the pillow and she brought it to her face.
12:23
She got up off the bed, using her hands to pull herself up and immediately regretted it after feeling pain in her right hand. She continued walking and went to open the door.
"I swear they made me take them," Craig said hurriedly.
Evanee stared at him, Evan, and Jonathan.
"Come here, Ducky," Evan said, reaching out and hugging her. "Gemma's strong. She'll keep going."
He let go and Craig's eyes then traveled to Evanee's hand.
"What did you do?"
The three boys looked at her with wide eyes.
"It was an accident. I was-"
"Accident, my ass," Jonathan huffed. "Guess what? You're stuck with us for the next few days and we sure as hell aren't letting you out of our sight."
This wasn't what she needed at all.
