Chapter 20

Nobody answered the door, but the cars were parked out in front. The lights were also on in the house.

Instead of wasting her time knocking again, Evanee climbed on top of one of the cars and leaped towards the roof, pulling herself up. Thankfully, the roof wasn't steep so she was able to freely walk.

"Evanee, dear? Is that you?"

She almost slipped from the sudden surprise, but the raven haired girl caught herself. It was Mrs.Hyslop, her elderly neighbor.

"Oh, good evening, Mrs.Hyslop. It's me. I'm just getting into the house. Forgot my keys," she said nervously.

"Okay, dear. Be careful. Heaven only knows what's going on in that house?"

"In the house?" Evanee asked, expecting her neighbor to mainly be concerned by the fact that she was currently standing on her roof.

Mrs.Hyslop nodded, opening her front door. "Yes, inside. The ruckus has gone on for almost two days now. So much shouting. It's bad for my cats."

"Sorry about that. I'll make sure to check that," she apologized, watching her neighbor wave goodbye and go into her house.

Evanee sighed and walked towards her window, opening it with ease and jumping inside her room.

"Home, sweet home," she mumbled to herself. Though, that feeling of relief was gone instantly once she heard shouting from downstairs.

The two boys were probably still fighting. Quietly, Evanee walked out of her room and towards the stairs. She was about to shout at them until she heard her name.

"Evanee isn't the same person you supposedly fell in love with in high school. She grew up and she told you that. Get that through your thick skill. You can't just expect her to act that way you wanted her to act," Craig shouted.

"Supposedly? I loved her and I still do. She's hurting right now and I understand that. You don't know her like I do. She's still the same girl. She just needs time to get better and I am here to support her, no matter what you say."

This was getting way out of hand.

Craig was fuming. "Why don't you realize that she doesn't need you in her life? She doesn't want you. Why do you think she left? To get away from you. I'm all she has right now. She's broken, suicidal. She needs help. I'm the only one who can fix her."

That made Evanee's heart tug. This wasn't Craig. No. Craig was considerate, understanding, helpful. He wouldn't call her broken or suicidal. He cared about her.

It was hard to believe that now. Maybe he had been faking. Maybe it was all about proving that he could help Evanee better than anyone else could. Maybe it was all a game to him. Evanee's health and happiness was all a game.

The green eyed girl sat on the highest step of the stakes with her head leaning against the wall. This hurt. It hurt a damn lot.

Slowly, she got up and walked down the stairs to see Evan holding up Craig by the shirt and pushing him against the wall.

"Don't you ever say that again. She trusts you. That's something I'll probably never be able to say again. I made a lot of wrong choices, but I love her and everything you just said proved that you don't care about her. So fuck you."

Evan's arm went back, but he was stopped by a gentle hand. He turned around to see Evanee with tears in her eyes.

"Put him down, Evan."

He let Craig go and Craig fell to the floor and didn't get up; not that he wasn't able to. He was too busy staring at Evanee with wide eyes.

"Evanee," he breathed out. "How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to hear that I'm just something you want to fix."

"Hey. You know I didn't mean it like that."

She shook her head. "It sounded exactly like that. You may think that you're trying to help, but this isn't some damn movie. I'm not some toy or machine that needs to be fixed. I'm not broken. I am a fucking person, Craig. Maybe I am a bit unstable, but I am not something that needs to be fixed or changed just so you can feel accomplished."

Evan was silent and so was Craig. Evanee's heavy breathing was the only thing that really stood out in the quiet room.

"If you're wondering, I stayed at Jonathan's for the last two days and I was right to. I don't think I can stay here," she sniffles, running up to her room and locking the door.

There were footsteps behind her, but she didn't care. She grabbed several of her bags and filled them with as much clothes and other necessities that could fit. Tears wouldn't stop flowing, but she didn't slow down.

"Evanee. Open the door, please. Just open the door," Craig called out. "You know I didn't mean it. I'm sorry. God, I'm sorry."

He was crying on the other side of the door.

Still, she refused to talk to him now. She threw her bags on the roof and climbed out. She took out her phone and contemplated on who to call.

Jonathan had only just dropped her off less than thirty minutes age. She didn't want to have to call him back. Her eyes landed on David's number.

"Hello?" David's voice answered. "Evanee?"

"David," Evanee cried. "Something happened and I kind of need a ride. I'm at the house right now and I just really need to leave."

"Are you okay? I'll be there in a few. Just stay where you are. I'm coming."

It was a bit cold outside so Evanee took out a jacket from one of her bags and put it on.

Why was she always so emotional? She hated it. Everything hurt her much more than it really should have. She was too sensitive.

"Evanee!" David called out. He saw her sitting on the roof. "Come on!"

The raven haired girl threw down her bags first and breathed out. There was no way she could climb off the ledge and she didn't want to jump on the roof of the car. Maybe a tiny leap wouldn't be so bad.

"Whatever you're thinking. Don't. Here!" David shouted, standing below the roof with his arms open.

"That's not safe."

"Jumping off a roof by yourself isn't safe either. Just do it."

With one more deep breath, she jumped off the roof and roughly landed in David's arms.

"Holy fuck."

David groaned in response and immediately let her down, catching his breath. "You're a lot heavier than I thought you would be."

The two of them went to the car with Evanee's bags.

"So where to?"

"Am I able to stay at your place for tonight?"

He shook his head. "Sorry. My brother is having a party at the house so I don't think you'd be able to get any sleep and I already have a room booked with Berenice at a hotel somewhere near here."

"Are you able to take me to Tyler's place?"

He nodded and began driving. "What happened back there?"

"Craig and Evan were fighting. They didn't know I was there and some things were said about me."

David stopped the car and parked to the side. "Who said something? Let's go back."

"David," Evanee said softly. "It's fine."

"It's not fine. You know what? You get some rest tonight. Tomorrow, we're all doing something about this."

He started the car again and they drove to Tyler's house silently. Evanee wondered what David meant when he said 'all'. He'd probably turn the whole thing into an intervention and if that was the case, it would probably be about Evanee.

Everything went to shit ever since she arrived. She knew that. Maybe leaving wouldn't be such a bad idea. It wouldn't be running away from her problems. It would be solving them.

"Here it is. You'll be okay, right? I could always book another room for you at the hotel," David offered.

"It's fine. Tell Berenice that I said hi and thank you for this, David. I really appreciate it."

"Anytime. Stay safe."

She grabbed all her bags and watched as David drove off. Then she went to knock on the door. There was a bit of shouting then silence as the door opened.

"We're not interested in your stupid cookies!" Kelly answered the door, only to scream as she saw Evanee's face. "Evanee. I'm so sorry. I thought it was those annoying girls that keep coming to our house. Here, come in."

Tyler was near the door. "Have you been crying? What happened?"

These were her friends, but Evanee felt as if she was being constricted under their stares and questions. Her breathing quickened again.

"I- David dropped me off here from the house. Evan and Craig were fighting again and they didn't know I was there so certain things were said. I just really had to get out."

"Who the hell said it? It was Evan, wasn't it? He always overreacts when he's angry," Tyler complained.

"No. He actually kind of defended me."

"No," Tyler shook his head. "Craig? Craig couldn't do such a thing. I mean- He's Craig. Fuck. Kelly, can you set up the guest bedroom. I need to make a call. There's still some Jambalaya on the stove if you're hungry, Evanee."

Tyler and Kelly left so Evanee went to the kitchen to get some food. Maybe that would help. She checked her phone to see several missed calls and messages, most of them coming from Craig. Though, there was one message from Evan.

Hey, Ducky. I know you're mad and I know I've made things a lot worse. It's really hard sometimes to stop being angry, but I'm really trying. I've actually started to see a therapist but it doesn't seem like that's helping.
Everything Craig said tonight. You know he didn't mean it like that. He's still our friend and I'm sorry for all the fighting. I guess you're just a sensitive subject for me and I didn't want to lose you again, but I've accepted that I already have.
I've lost Sydney, you, my friends and it's my fault. So, I'm leaving for a couple weeks, maybe longer. My flight to Toronto leaves in a couple of hours. You've always been a smart girl, Evanee, and I know that you say you aren't the same girl I fell in love with, but I know thats a lie. Keep those angel wings for me, Ducky. I love you.

Evanee's chest hurt. This couldn't be right. As much as she was hurting right now, she didn't want him to leave.

She could hear shouting from the other room, no doubt it was Tyler arguing with Craig over the phone. She ran towards the noise and saw Tyler standing up with the angriest look on his face.

"Tyler," Evanee said quickly.

"Yes, Evanee?"

"I need to borrow one of your cars. Please. This is an emergency."

He looked reluctant and very confused, but he grabbed one of the keys off his desk and tossed it at Evanee. "The pick up is out front. Be careful."

Evanee hugged him tightly before leaving and was about to head out the door as Kelly walked down the stairs. She ran back to hug her too and then darted outside and started the truck.

The message was sent over two hours ago and it took several hours just to get to the airport. She had to make it.

Huge thank you to Contoliyo for her suggestions. I didn't go exactly along with her ideas, but I did include a lot of them into this chapter and I think it works really well. Also, SO MUCH DRAMA. I'm so excited to write the next chapter already. I honestly have no idea what will happen yet. Comment as many times as you would like on why you think of all the characters because comments, especially long ones, make my day.

Honestly, I get so happy when I see that so many of you comment and I love seeing really specific comments so vote and comment
