"Daniel Miller," she began and her tone was controlled as she continued to speak, "I am giving you an opportunity to perform my Kanyadaan ritual."
The declaration boomed through the room and caused an immediate hush.
Every pair of eyes turned to Daniel Miller, whose thick brows furrowed deeply in confusion and frustration.
The silence in the room was almost tangible and heavy with the weight of Sunaina's challenge.
Daniel's sharp voice broke through the stillness, "Girl! Do you know what you are talking about?".
His tone was laced with disbelief and authority as he took an instant glance of his brother, Neil Khanna and his daughter-in-law, Nishma.
Neil's expression was cold and dangerous, while Nishma's eyes narrowed in disapproval.
Nishma stepped forward as her tall frame cast a formidable shadow over Sunaina's smaller figure.
Her nose flared with indignation as she approached and her posture was radiating dominance.
"What do you think you're doing?" Nishma's voice was cold and commanding like her father as her gaze was fixed firmly on Sunaina.
Sunaina met Nishma's imposing stance with a calm and unwavering gaze. She stood her ground and her small frame seemed even more resolute under the shadow of Nishma's height.
"I'm doing exactly what I need to. I'm offering Daniel Miller a role in it and he can't refuse it because he doesn't have a choice here", Sunaina replied in a mocking tone.
Nishma's eyes flashed with anger and her mouth was open to retort. But before she could speak, Chase stepped in and gently took Nishma's hand in his.
Chase turned his gaze toward his father, Daniel Miller, with a look of earnest concern.
"Dad, think about Aunt Ashi", Chase said and the mention of Aashmaan seemed to momentarily not only soften Daniel's expression but also cooled down Nishma and Neil.
"Okay! Let's do it", Daniel Miller responded and his tone was firm but subdued.
Sunaina's gaze remained steady, a hint of satisfaction appeared in her eyes as they moved forward to perform the ritual.
The five families watched in silence, and the ritual began to unfold.
Daniel Miller performed the 'Giving away the bride' ritual by taking Sunaina's hand gently and guiding it to rest on Nilay's palm.
The gesture was formal and deliberate and it marked the completion of the Kanyadaan ritual.
As their hands connected, the room's atmosphere shifted and Sunaina's expression remained composed as her eyes were reflecting a mix of relief and triumph.
"Thank you", Sunaina said to Daniel Miller who was still visibly unsettled as he took his place back.
On the other hand, Nilay's jaw clenched tightly as frustration and helplessness was evident.
He sat there as he was caught in the midst of Sunaina's audacious decisions and was unable to escape the grip of her determined madness.
His gaze was fixed on Sunaina which had a mixture of anger and resignation that was only reflecting his struggle against the unfolding events.
"What's the next ritual, Priest?", Sunaina asked the priest.
"The next is 'applying the sacred vermillion' ritual, 'tying the sacred necklace' ritual, 'the vows and the seven circumambulating around the consecrated fire' ritual", the priest responded in a soft tone.
"Sure", Sunaina said as she was still holding Nilay's hand tightly and her eyes were never leaving his face which hard and unyielding.
As the holy fire crackled, Sunaina reached for the sacred red powder- 'the vermillion' small box.
She dipped her fingers into the box, took a pinch of it, while saying, "The first right, the first oath, the first step will all be mine".
Nilay frowned slightly as he looked at her.
And then Sunaina brought her hand to Nilay's forehead. Her movements were precise and controlled but the intensity in her eyes was overwhelming.
She was forcing the ritual and, pushing Nilay into a corner from which she believed there was no escape.
Nilay's jaw tightened and his breath shallow as Sunaina's hand hovered over his head.
Sunaina actually applied red vermillion on Nilay's forehead, leaving everyone to gasp and stunned.
The red vermillion sprinkled on his nose and chin made him appear more innocent and appealing that fluttered her heart.
Sunaina mentally warded off the evil eyes and then She unlocked her chain, taking out from her neck and tied around Nilay's neck while inhaling his scent deeply and groaning in joy.
"From now on, You are my Gharwala (husband)", Sunaina spoke and her act was swift, decisive, and it sent shockwaves through the room.
Everyone gasped, while Nilay sat frozen there.
The warmth of the chain burnt his skin as he pursed his lips tightly.
"Now, it's your turn", Sunaina said as she pushed the original golden chain and the box of vermillion before his eyes but Nilay sat there blankly.
"Nora", Sunaina called Nora who pushed the gun more into Aashmaan's temple that caused bruises there.
The room was silent and the tension was thick as everyone held their breath. Even the men in black suits seemed unsure of what to do next.
Sunaina leaned in close to Nilay and her voice was a low whisper, "This is it. After this, you'll be mine, and no one will ever take you away from me."
Nilay's eyes flashed with defiance as he coldly took the vermillion box in his hand and poured all the vermillion on her hairline, emptied the box completely and dropped the box on the ground furiously.
Sunaina's eyes shut down for a few seconds the moment, Nilay poured all the vermillion and the moment she opened it, her eyes clashed it with his deep brown Lake-like eyes.
Nilay applied the sindoor on her forehead, in between her mid hairline.
This vermillion was the first mark for her towards him. His fists were clenching in helpless anger as he looked at his mother.
Aashmaan was still under Nora's watchful eye and looking on in silent horror as her eyes were filled with worry for her son.
Nilay exhaled sharply and his fists were tightening as he realized the weight of what had just happened.
Sunaina was unfazed and she continued with the next step as she held up the Nuptial golden chain- 'the sacred thread' which was ready to drape it around her neck.
Nilay stared at her and the golden chain.
"Do it", Sunaina commanded softly as she was holding the thread out to Nilay.
"Complete the ritual, Nilay. There's no going back now.", Sunaina finished speaking and Nilay's heart pounded in his chest.
Nilay took the sacred thread and tied it around Sunaina's neck while his fingers were trembling slightly.
As he did it, he leaned in close, whispering harshly in her ears, "You will pay for this."
His warm breath brushed against her neck and tickled her ear.
Sunaina chuckled softly as she was unfazed by his words.
Together, they stood and were ready for the seven vows and the seven rounds around the holy fire that would bound them for seven lifetimes.
However, just as they were about to begin, Sunaina reached out and stopped Nilay from taking the lead.
Her hand firmly gripped his arm, and with a smirk, she shook her head slightly.
"I will lead," she said calmly and her voice was steady and full of authority.
Nilay's eyes flashed with frustration, but he stayed silent and was unable to resist her boldness as she took the first step around the holy fire.
"I am taking my vows, and you only have to follow me because it's my love and my vows", Sunaina declared and her voice rang out with firm conviction.
Her bold words left not only Nilay but everyone in the room stunned.
Everyone exchanged shocking glances. Nilay clenched his fists, but there was no stopping her now.
Sunaina was in control, and she made sure everyone knew it.
Because it was her wedding. DEVIL's wedding.
