there was too much talk about what could be done and what could be done instead. taehyungs heart said one thing but his mind said another – and reality agreed with his mind. the prescriptions that weren't working made him angry, and the treatment that was created and followed was a waste of time since it didnt do what it was supposed to do. his mothers lungs were shot. they had one job to do and all he saw was her breathing borrowed air every day. the plastic tubes shoved up her nose and the tank that took his place beside her bed. he was angry. angry at the world for dealing him a hand that showed no win in the end.
taehyung walked out of the room, angry from what he heard and angry at what his father said. how could he do that? how could he give up on his wife? the mother of his child?
"taehyung where are you going?" it was his father, following him out of the conference room like he was unable to fathom how his son could be feeling. "we need to go see your mother."
just thinking about it made him sick to his stomach, and maybe with a more settled stomach and clear mind he would have made a better decision. "what for?" he shot back, not caring they were in the middle of the hallways now. there were nurses and some patients walking about, but all taehyung saw was his father – the man that decided enough was enough and all their progress needed to be stopped, to have his mothers life end comfortably. it made no sense, to not try everything that they could that would help his mom and have her come home soon. but he knew better, he just didnt want to admit it. they have been trying everything for months.
"so she can go and be happy at the same time, you are her most prized posession." his father said. he knew better than to start an argument with his son. now was not the time, there would never be a time for that. not when time was so short these days. instead he left the boy to have some space, only telling him he's was going to leave to get some new flowers and bring back some takeout. he hoped that taehyung would meet them for dinner later on in her room.
right now all he wanted to be was alone. yet he also wanted to go to the garden. he liked how he felt there. he liked seeing the sky and seeing the flowers, some touch of familiarity with how life should have been. it wasn't fair to die in a hospital and it wasnt fair for a child to spend most of their days there visiting the ones they love most. he liked the company.
thats why he found himself walking past the room he was in earlier, only to see stuart talking with his nurse as she gave him a paper cup of medicine paired with a tray for lunch. there was no giggling ravenette sitting by the window with a mountain dew in his arms.
he also wasnt sitting in the cafeteria by the window either. taehyung only realized then how many times he saw the boy looking out the window. probably wishing he wasnt trapped inside a hospital as well. taehyung didnt enjoy being here either, although he doesnt think he'd ever forgive himself if he spent his life anywhere else. his mom had always been his number one priority, ever seen she was diagnosed. cancer was unexpected like that, you didnt know how much time you had left or which days would be the good ones. taehyung made the decision to be there for all of them.
he had almost given up, only partly wanting to walk all the way up to the floor with the garden but the thought of doing it for nothing was a bummer.
his thoughts were interrupted when there was a frustrated grunt that stole his thoughts away. his eyes glancing over to the side as he left the cafeteria, a small smile gracing his lips at the sight. the raventte was standing in front of a vending machine and had kicked the bottom of it, clearly upset with the results he got from the snack machine.
"so this is your favorite place in the hospital." taehyung found himself speaking before he could even consider anything else. his smile only grew when he saw the boy look up at him, hair covered by the same hood as always. there was a small grin that appeared when he realized who it was.
"this would be my third." jungkook said, looking back through the glass at the colorful sodas and candies all sitting so close yet trapped away from his greedy hands. he kicked it again and mumbled something softly, only to pull off the hood and sigh in defeat. "this metal monster ate my 5 bucks." he said.
"do you need another 5 bucks?" taehyung offered, finally stepping closer and already reaching into his pocket for his wallet.
jungkook surprised him, his words making his heart stop momentarily and suddenly he had no clue what to say. "do you need anything?"
taehyung knew the boy was referring to what they talked about earlier. he knew jungkook was aware of the talk with the doctor and that it had happened already. and now taehyung had nothing to say – because he still didnt know how he felt. everything was so confusing and emotions were the only thing responsible for making people feel so confused. the facts were simple and they told him the truth, but right now the only truth he knew was that he knew he wanted to spend time with the ravenette.
"i need to know what your favorite color is." taehyung said.
it confused the boy too, no longer thinking about the mountain dew he wanted and only staring at the other guy in front of him. "and why do you need to know that?" he asked.
"i dont think i know enough about you." taehyung said simply, "yet you know that my mom is dying. it seems a little unequal." he doesnt know why he said it. maybe saying it outloud would help. except the drop of his stomach and the crack of his heart said the opposite. taehyung knew his mom was dying. but jungkook seemed like an okay person to tell that too.
jungkook also found himself at a loss for words. there really wasnt much to say to someone who just confessed that one of their parents was no longer going to be on this planet. nothing could make that better. not a chocolate or a friend or a trip to the garden. jungkook usually didnt find himself needing to console others, he was the one that needed the consoling – regardless if he was accepting of it or not. "come on." was all he said.
soon the two boys were walking down the hallways, except instead of the stairwell they were heading for the elevators. taehyung did as he was told, following the boy and watching as he hit the button. neither spoke as they waited, a comfortable silence fell over the two boys as they waited for the elevator, only the hooded boy speaking once they entered. "i like the piano. i used to play all the time." he said.
taehyung glanced over, a small smile gracing his handsome face . "my dad owns a music shop." he said. the thought of the two boys spending time outside the hospital crossed his mind, spending time in the music store with all the instruments and sheet music, maybe jungkook could play something and show him how talented he was. it would be a lovely idea. something to look forward too.
the elevator dinged before anything else could be said, a number 8 glowing at the top of the door to show what floor they landed on.
"thats cool." jungkook said, stepping off the elevator and still leading the way down a hall that the other had never been down before. it seemed different, no hospital patient rooms or nurses stations. instead there were big windows showing rooms he's never seen before and people he's never ran into before. jungkook just smiled small as they walked, no questions asked as they made their way to whatever their destination was.
"do you know why they play this music in the hospital?" the ravenette finally asked.
it was the first time taehyung noticed the music over the speakers. the usually soft songs and lofi beats were replaced with piano music and violins. it was an observation he's never made, his only observations being the way the other boy stopped in front of a particular big window, peering through the glass with a soft expression. "they play this song every time a new baby is born."
the soft piano notes filled their silence, yet there was no silence at all. taehyung looked into the room as well. the small beds were the temporary homes of blue and pink blankets wrapped around tiny bodies that had no idea what they were getting into.
there were a few nurses in there, walking around and checking on the newborns to make sure everything was okay. they were adorable, small faces and closed eyes as they dreamed about what a new life this was. he momentarily forgot about everything he was going through, watching the babies sleep so soundly and looking so peaceful. taehyung wondered what it was like to be like that. it was strange to think that there was a time in our lives that nothing mattered. there was no care in the world or a problem that could have us thinking about anything else other than our next bottle or patted back.
"this is my first favorite place to be." jungkook said, and taehyung didnt have to question it for a second. they stood there for a while, enjoying the gift of new life and taehyung understood it perfectly.
