Chapter 3
You turn to the side only to find Jungkook standing there, gaze fixated on you. His dark hair falls over his forehead, framing his face, and there's a softness in his gaze that contrasts with the ever-present edge of mischief in his smile.
"I thought you went back to Busan. What are you doing here?"
He walks towards you, presence somehow filling the space entirely. "What, can't stop by to say hi? You've been avoiding my texts all day."
"I've been working," you counter, sitting up straighter. "Why are you still here?"
His lips twitch into a smirk, but he doesn't answer right away. Instead, he takes the space beside you and sits down, leaning forward on his elbows. "I just came to check up on you."
He already did that this morning. You raise an eyebrow, skeptical. "Do you need something?"
Jungkook chuckles softly, shaking his head. "Do I need a reason to check on you?"
"Yes," you reply flatly, crossing your arms.
He leans back, feigning offense. "Wow. You wound me. Here I am, being a thoughtful friend, and you're suspicious of my motives." He smiles softly, but there's a hint of concern in his eyes. "You probably skipped lunch again."
Did you? Now that he's mentioned it, you guess you did.
Your silence betrays you.
"It's a good thing I came prepared." Only now do you notice the paper bag in his hand.
You glance at it warily. "What's that?"
"Food," he says, like it's the most obvious thing in the world. "Not the vending machine junk you're probably living on, either. Real food."
Inside, you find neatly packed containers of your favorite dishes. The sight alone makes your stomach grumble, and Jungkook grins as if he's already won.
"Now eat. Before your next round of patients comes in."
As you take the first bite, you realize just how hungry you are. Jungkook watches you, his expression softening, and for a brief moment, the chaos of the hospital fades into the background.
"Thanks," you mumble between bites, savoring the familiar flavors that flood your senses. It's a simple gesture, but the warmth of the meal feels like a lifeline after a chaotic day.
Jungkook shrugs nonchalantly, though there's a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes. "It's no big deal," he says, leaning back and watching you with a quiet ease.
After a moment, he stands, stretching his arms as if shaking off the weight of his concern. "I should get going. Make sure you finish that before heading back to work."
"Yes, Mom," you tease, shooting him a cheeky grin.
He rolls his eyes, but there's a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "You're impossible."
And with that, he steps away, his presence leaving behind a strange mixture of comfort and longing.
Leaving the space beside you, Jungkook makes his way to the elevator, his pace unhurried. The hum of the hospital fades as he presses the button for the ground floor, leaning back against the cool metal wall.
His gaze flickers to the small screen above the doors, watching the numbers descend with practiced indifference.
The elevator halts abruptly on the seventh floor. The soft chime announces a new passenger, and the doors slide open to reveal Yugyeom, clipboard in hand. He steps in casually, sharp eyes scanning over a page before sending Jungkook a cursory glance.
For a moment, neither speaks, the faint hum of the elevator filling the silence. Then, Yugyeom's lips curl into a small smile as he glances at nothing in particular. "You're looking a lot better," he comments lightly, breaking the quiet.
"Yeah," Jungkook replies, his tone casual but distant.
Yugyeom chuckles softly, tapping the clipboard against his palm. His tone shifts, teasing now.
"He was asking about you at the family reunion last week. Your mom said you were busy with school, but we both know you were probably goofing off with your friends. You even missed your appointment with him."
Jungkook rolls his eyes, a familiar gesture of exasperation, though he doesn't deny it.
The elevator resumes its descent, the numbers ticking down steadily. As the next floor approaches, Yugyeom finally turns to Jungkook, his expression serious. His voice drops, carrying a weight that contrasts with his earlier tone.
"You've been given a second chance after that accident," he says quietly. "Don't waste it doing useless stuff."
The words hang in the air, unspoken memories rising to the surface. Jungkook's jaw tightens for a fraction of a second, but he doesn't respond.
The elevator reaches the second floor and the doors slide open with a soft chime.
Yugyeom steps out, glancing back briefly over his shoulder. "Anyway, dad scheduled your next appointment on Friday. It was nice seeing you again. Say hi to Aunt and Uncle for me."
Jungkook watches him walk away, his words lingering like a shadow in the sterile light of the hospital corridor.
Alone again, he presses the button for the ground floor and leans back, his thoughts heavy as the elevator doors close once more.
