Chapter 8: Nursery Rhymes

John woke up to find Christine's side of the bed empty as he made his way into the living room, seeing that she was painting, he looked at what her latest masterpiece was becoming.

"Good morning sweetheart." He said, kissing her shoulder.

"Good morning love." She said, focusing on him before adverting her eyes back on her creation.

"What's your plans for today?" He asked.

"I don't know yet. I just decided to paint." She said.

"What are you painting?" He asked.

"I'm trying to think of what I could put in the nursery. Coming up with a theme is going to be an issue. I have some ideas but I wanted to know what you thought of for ideas." Christine said.

"What about a penguin theme? Babies love penguins." He said.

"I like that idea." She said.

"Like penguins playing baseball or hockey." He said.

"We'll have to hire someone to help us out with that. I've never painted or drawn a penguin before." She said as John came over and put his arms around her, his hands laying on her stomach.

"Are you and our little penguin hungry?" He asked.

"Yes." She said.

"Anything in particular?" He asked her as he went into the kitchen while she sat at the bar.

"What's on the menu?" She asked.

"Scrambled eggs, bacon and buttered toast with fruit." He said.

"Sounds good." She said, picking up a newspaper.

"Also, I thought we could look into lamaze classes." He said.

"I'm having him in the hospital, unless you have something else in mind?" She questioned.

"What about home birth? Like now, they have it to where you can have a baby in a little kid pool, at home." He said as Christine looked at him.

"Sweetheart, I know you want us to have him at home but it would be good to have him at the hospital with the best doctors and nurses." Christine said.

"If that's what you want, then we'll have him at the hospital but home birth could be plan B, just in case the weather or something happens where we can't get to the hospital." He said, starting to make breakfast.

"Okay, then we'll schedule a consultation with the midwives." She said.

"We'll put all this in the birth plan, but I'm worried." He said as she came over and stood in front of him.

"Darling, I am too but this is going to be a beautiful, scary but wonderful experience for us both. All that matters is that he's going to be healthy and happy with people who love him." She said wrapping her arms around the back of his neck.

"Seeing you all giddy about this is just as wonderful." He said.

"Not as much as seeing you all excited through both pregnancy and when he arrives." She said.

"I love you." He said.

"I love you too." She said as he leaned his head down to kiss her lips.

"You're glowing." He said.

"That's because I'm happy and so excited right at this moment, plus I'm hungry." She said.

"What do you say after breakfast, we go and figure out what we need to buy for the nursery?" He questioned as she smiled.

"I'd love that and after, I hope you feel up to take me to our bedroom to make me feel even better." She whispered in his ear.

"We can go upstairs right after breakfast, if you're up for it?" He asked.

"I am." She said.

"Oh Mrs. McVie and things you do to me." John said.

"Not as much as you do to me, Mr. McVie." Christine said as she poured herself a glass of water.

They sat down and had breakfast, talking about their baby as Christine came over and sat on his lap.

"Breakfast was delicious darling." Christine said.

"Thank you baby. Did our baby enjoy it?" He asked.

"Oh yes." Christine said.

"What do you we go upstairs and have some more fun?" He questioned.

"Let's go!" Christine said as she got up and pulled him up as he almost ran to their bedroom, her pulling him as fast as she could walk.

They reached their room, he pulled off her dress and she took off his shirt and he adjusted himself on the bed with her on top.

"This is getting harder to do." Christine said.

"I know but this is only way because I don't want to crush him." John said, rubbing her stomach.

"I guess this a turn off for you? I mean, I know being pregnant is hard but we can't go five months without sex, it's totally impossible!" She said, frustrated to the point where she started crying.

"Don't cry baby and no, you never turn me off " He said, wiping her tears.

"I can't help it, my hormones are all fucked up. This is not me, being all wimpy." She said.

"You're growing our little penguin, nothing is sexier than that. I love you and this splendid and bittersweet experience we get to endure each day." John said.

"Really?" She asked.

"Yes." He said, wiping the tears streaming down her face.

"I love you and our baby so much." She said, hugging him.

"We love you too darling." He said as she smiled, kissing him.

...

It was the late evening after dinner when John and Christine decided to go to the hardware store and purchase paint and materials and when they got back home, they decided to start painting, more like John while Christine was telling him how to do it and they were also deciding on how to decorate the nursery.

"I can't believe you found two paint colors called 'Arctic Penguin' in a white primer and 'Penguin Ice Blue'." Christine said as John smiled.

"Both are a great color, I mean it's exactly what we were looking for." He said, starting the priming the walls with the white paint while Christine sat in the rocking chair.

"Don't be upset in the future if he decides to paint over it." She said.

"It's his room, I mean you didn't like my choice of paint in my room when you moved in with me." He said.

"That's because it was painted a chocolate brown and I thought a pastel pink would look better than staring at tacky chocolate brown walls all day." She said.

"I loved my choice of color but I didn't mind you repainting until I woke up and wandered why it looked like someone came in and rearranged my entire bedroom." He said.

"If I was going to sleep beside you, I did not want our bed in front of the window and it made more space to move around in." She said.

"Well, I was thinking about his crib going against this wall right here, between the door and the closet." He said.

"We have the same ideas, but his dresser along that wall, his changing table right there where you're standing and the rocking chair right beside the window with a little table adorned with a lamp, books and toys." She said.

"Me, Lindsey and Mick will be assembling the furniture. I don't want you and Stevie lifting anything too heavy." He said.

"We'll just decorate and boss you three around." She said, smiling as she felt their baby kick her hands.

"That's how it always goes." He said, studying her facial expressions.

"He's moving again." Christine said excitedly as John came over, putting his hands where hers is.

"I don't feel it." He said.

"He just kicked me right here." She said, waiting for another one for John to feel.

"He might be a sleep kicker like his mummy." He said joking.

"I don't kick you." She said.

"Yeah, tell that to my shin in the middle of the night when you roll over to face me when you're asleep." He said.

"I'm just stretching my legs." She said.

"Yeah okay." He said, pretending his shin hurt.

"Be lucky it's not your precious manhood but keep testing me and I'll score next time." She said, laughing and trying to keep a straight face.

"I better build a pillow fort in-between us." He said as she gave him one of her stares.

"You better not or after he's born, you won't get any for a long time." She said.

"All I'm saying darling is you like to kick in your sleep and my body feels it the next day." He said, painting.

"It's not my fault I can't get comfortable anymore, it's not easy growing a baby." She said.

"The doctor recommended us getting a body pillow designed to keep your body from straining while you nap or when you're in bed at night." He said.

"I have one and the bloody thing doesn't work. You're body is comfier and it makes me sleep better when I'm not able to." She said.

"I feel like a tree being climbed." He said.

"Get use to it honey because I can't sleep with that damn body pillow when I have the best one there is and by the way, you missed a spot right there." She said, pointing at the missed spot in front of him.

"I'll get to it." He said.

"Let me see the brush." She said, getting up as he looked at her.

"Chrissy, that's way to high for you to reach." He said.

"I'm bored and have nothing to do." She said.

"Why don't you go take a bath and relax?" He questioned, rubbing her sore back.

"Come take one with me then." She said.

"I mean for your back darling." He said.

"Fine, stay in here and paint. Miss watching me get undressed and having my own kind of fun." She whispered huskily in his ear while she patted his behind and walking out of the nursery as he hurried to their master bathroom as she took off her dress slowly for him.

"You make it very hard to say no to, you know that?" He questioned, drawing her bath water.

"Yeah, but you never could say no to me." Christine said as John nodded.
