Chapter 24: Duty bound
"Just make sure you get it right."
☆
Adam just about manages to make his way back to the rooftop. He falls to his knees on the ground. Upset, frustrated. The weight of his responsibilities weigh heavy on his shoulders. He wonders if he had done the right thing by telling Isaac the truth. There was no question in his own mind that he was going to return to the point in which everything changed, but he could have easily slipped away. He could have spared Isaac the pain of knowing the truth and saved himself the pain of saying goodbye, but honesty had always been a weakness of his. He did not like to keep secrets and a guilty conscience had always been too much for him to bear. Maybe that was the makeup of an angel. To be the purest form. To do good.
He hears the rooftop door open to see Zander stepping through. He approaches Adam, stopping just short of him. “He's resting. He won't remember.” His words get no response. “I know it sucks…”
Adam emits a snort at the comment. “Do you think so? You have no idea.”
“I have no idea?” Zander repeats the question. Do you think it's just you he will forget? I have been earthbound since it happened. I have been a part of his life since he was 12. Trying my best to fix what was broken. To mend his relationship with his brother, but each time things looked promising, that night was brought up time and time again.” Zander crouches by Adam's side. “You will find happiness in knowing he will live his life. He will be free to do all he wants. Push himself to his limits without fear. You will give him that.”
“And what happens to us?” Adam looks up at Zander.
“We move on. Find another lost soul who needs guidance."
“What if I don't want to do this anymore? I know Jojo said we outlive people, but it's a choice right? Isaac could still be with me. At least for his lifetime, if not for mine.”
Zander exhales a heavy sigh. “Adam, he won't know you. He won't remember you. Is it worth risking a long life on earth for a man who doesn't know you exist?” Zander places a hand on his shoulder. “I know it's tough, but it will be better if you just forget him. Just be happy he is happy.”
“You are taking it well considering he won't see you either.” Adam says a little sarcastically. “Isn't he meant to be your friend?”
“I'm just more logical about it, that's all. There is a reason why I am a mind angel and not a guardian of the heart. “I have learned to deal with it over time. This isn't my first rodeo.” He holds out his other hand offering over a bottle of water. “Here, take this. Isaac is sound asleep. When he wakes, all this will be over.
Adam reluctantly takes the bottle being offered to him. He nods as a response. He knew what he had to do as he undid the lid. He pulls the sachet from his pocket and tears the top of it with his teeth, letting the pinkish powder fall into the bottle. It dissolves in an instant as he watches the water change colour to a faint peach. He looks back up at Zander. “I have to get this right or….”
“Just make sure you get it right. You mustn't let your younger self see you.” Zander finishes the sentence.
Adam takes the bottle to his lips, he tilts his head back as he begins to drink. He takes no breath as he chugs every drop down until there is nothing left. He lets the bottle fall to the ground as he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. He begins to feel that now familiar drowsiness take a hold as the urge to lay down hits him. Zander pulls Adam towards him as he sits down on the ground. Adam's head is guided to his lap as his head takes rest on one of Zander's legs, getting heavier, the further into the sleep he gets.
Zander begins to stroke the soft hair on Adam's head as the male is now deep in the sleep of change, as he journeys to another time and place. “Will he do it?” He questions.
Jojo, who had suddenly appeared, crouches down by Zander's side, looking at the sleeping figure resting on Zander's lap. She smiles fondly at the sleeping angel. “He doesn't even know what power he possesses. This one I cannot call, but one thing I do know.” She looks at Zander. “I have a feeling this won't be the end.”
