Chapter 10: The strange connection

"He is an attractive guy. I mean, if I were into guys…"

"Adam…. Hey, Adam." Isaac keeps turning towards his passenger, who had dozed off, not long after they had left the pub.

He opens his eyes to see the image of Isaac come into view.  "Was I asleep?" He questions as he sits up a little.

"You've been asleep the whole journey. Did the drink really knock you out that much?"

"I… I guess it did." Adam sits up in the passenger seat, adjusting his neck from left to right. He looks at the briefcase sitting on the back seat, thinking back on the strangeness of the day, before looking at Isaac's profile as he continues to drive. Had he really slept soundly? This was new.

Isaac pulls into an empty space outside the office, as Jojo hurries towards the pair. "You got the documents signed, yes?" She asks with urgency.

Adam reaches back for the briefcase as he gets out of he car. "They're here." He puts the case on the bonnet and clicks open the fastenings. The documents get pulled out and handed to her. He sees Jojo take them from him. A moment of sorrow glimmered in her eyes. "Jojo, was she sick?" He asks as she seems to hug the papers to her chest.

"She was crazy." Isaac interrupts as he now closes the car door. "The next time you want us to visit one of your fruit loop clients, you can do it you yourself."

"What are you talking about?" Jojo laughs a little hysterically. "She was the sweetest soul to grace this world."

"Was?" Adam looks at Jojo, who seems to gloss over his words.

"It's late for both of you. Get yourselves home. Big match tomorrow." She turns away before any more questions could be thrown her way.

Isaac looks down at his phone buzzing. "See you tomorrow…. Not on the pitch." He pats Adam's shoulder as he walks away to answer his call. "Zander, where are you?"

Adam stands alone. He felt strange. More stranger than usual. He watches Jojo disappear into the tall office building. She knew more about Miss Fine than she was letting on and as for Isaac, he was another mystery entirely.

Zander places the pint glass in front of his friend, before sitting down opposite with his own. "Thank you kind sir." Isaac announces in a posh voice before picking up the glass and downing half the contents in one go.

"Slow down. That's meant to last." Zander comments as he takes a sip of his own drink.

"You haven't had a day like mine. I need this." Isaac once again resumes the drinking, downing the rest of it.

"Care to elaborate." Zander says, folding his arms as he sits back on the worn armchair.

"Not really. Just that, I think I encountered a witch and a kindred spirit."

Zander frowns at his friend. "Are you sure that's your first beer?"

"Yes my friend and it was lovely." He raises his empty glass. "I'll get the next one." He goes to get up, but Zander reaches across the table to stop him.

"Woah woah, wait a minute. You need to tell me what's going on?"

Isaac reluctantly puts down his empty glass. "I just want to forget today."

"Which part?"

"All of it. It was too. Ah, I don't know. I just wasn't myself." Isaac furrows his brow as if annoyed He looks at Zander. "I have to go watch a football match tomorrow."

"You have to do what?" Zander emits a laugh at the thought of it.

"I know." He grabs his glass once again, wanting to take a drink but realising it's empty. "Adam made me do it."

"Now we're getting somewhere." Zander grins. "How did he make you exactly?"

Isaac sighs as he recalls the face of his co-worker. "He has this look which makes me feel like I want to do stuff. He makes me a nice person."

"Ok so firstly, you are a nice person. And secondly…." Zander leans across the table. "He is an attractive guy. I mean, if I were into guys…"

"I'm not into guys either…." Isaac shakes his head.

"You're not into anyone." Zander laughs. "And I'm not judging either way."

"Like I said, I don't want to talk about it. Let's talk about you." Isaac looks at Zander expectantly.

"Well, there's a first. I was beginning to think I was your therapist." He laughs while taking another drink. "My life is the same old and not as half as interesting as your revelation. He leans across the table, grabbing the empty glass. "If I fill, you need to spill… I want to know all about the guy who has got Isaac Rhodes questioning his life."

Isaac leans back in his seat. He folds his arms as the glass is removed, saying nothing, but his mind is buzzing. It seemed that since he had met the man, all he could think about was Adam, to the point that he felt like he needed to stay by his side.
