Chapter 1: Leaving
I sighed as I rubbed my temples. I had a splitting headache because of the drinkers tonight. Hopefully they don't show up again...
There was a small knock and I groaned, "Come in," I said in a monotone voice. I heard the door open and close and saw my boss, Donovan. My frown lifted up into a smile. Donovan was very much a gentleman. He always wanted my opinion about something, and if I wasn't comfortable he would change it in an instant.
"Hey, Donnie!" I chirped. He smiled and pat my head, "Good show. Sorry about the newbies... They don't know how to treat you." I kissed his cheek and he pulled me into a hug, "It's no problem. But, next time... Give 'em a warning," I joked. He chuckled and let go. He looked on his watch, "Well, you better get home. Julie doesn't like it when you're still around." I nodded my head and slipped into my coat.
Julie Terrance was another singer, like myself. She didn't like me because Donnie always says I'm better at singing then her. Which I don't think. She had a beautiful voice, and I know so many people who are better singers than me.
I waved goodbye as I walked down the street. The street lamps glowed in the dark streets. I it distracted by the lamps, and I bumped into someone. "Oh! I'm so sorry!" I apologized quickly, putting my hand on their shoulder.
"It's fine. Ya don't need to worry about it," a deep voice replied. His fedora was tilted, but I could see little white pinpricks of an eye. Is he a monster?
"If you don't mind me asking, are you a monster?" I asked. He let out a deep chuckle, and nodded his head, fixing his fedora so I could see his face. "Yup. A skeleton. Got any problem with that?"
"Oh nonono! I've never met a monster before and I... Well, just wanted to make sure," I giggled nervously. He smiled, and winked at me, "See ya 'round, toots."
I smiled softly as he walked away. I continue to walk, but I kinda jogged home. I opened the door the my apartment, seeing my best friend and roommate, Betty, standing there. "Hiya (Y/N)!" She said cheerily in her New Jersey accent.
I set my coat down on the little couch. "How was tonight?" She asked, making something on the stove. "Annoying! There's these newbies who keep whooping and howling everything I do a well-known song. It's just- Agh!"
"Tsk. Well, did Donnie do anything about it?" She walked out with some soup. "Nope. But he said he'll do something about it the next time they come back," I responded while slurping some of the soup.
"But, umm, hey (Y/N)?" Betty said softly. I looked up, "Hm? What's up?"
"Ya know Daddy? Well, he got a new job..."
"That's great! Where at?" I asked. She looked so sad for a moment then muttered something I couldn't hear. "What was that? Sorry, can't hear you. Maybe all that singing-"
"It's in New York!" She wailed. Tears were cascading down her face, and on her pinkish shirt. "Wh-What? Betts, do you-"
"Yes! I gotta go with him!" She cut me off again. I dropped my spoon and hugged her, "You're 20. An adult. Tell him you want to stay..." I whispered. She only sobbed, "He wanted me to go with him 'cause of what happened to Mom! He doesn't want me out of his sights."
A few years ago, my parents and Betty's mom went to go to a nightclub. Instead they got in a car accident. Betty's dad took me in, and I'm basically family. "What about rent?"
She sniffled and rubbed her eyes, "Since Daddy worked for our newspaper, he wrote a very good article about Later's. You'll be fine. You can read it if ya want, (Y/N)." She handed me the news, with a big circle around the article.
I skimmed over it, and something made it pop out from the rest. 'The singer (Y/N) (L/N), has a voice that angels would be jealous of.' No pressure.
When I finished reading the article, I looked up to see Betty with her bags. "I'm so sorry, I'll try to write to you, sweetheart..." I jumped out of my chair and squeezed her in a hug.
When she left the building I saw a limo that she entered into. I waved to her from my window, and she waved back. I sighed sadly, feeling a tear run down my face.
I changed into my nightdress and went to bed. Well, I gotta sing extra good now... Damn article...
