Chapter 20: Amnesia
Lucifer had been in the hospital for almost five days now and Michael had only been able to go see him for the last two of those days. Cas, Chuck, Becky and Gabriel made him explain everything to them while little Samandriel stood in the corner, listening and glaring at Michael with an intense hatred in his eyes. Lately it seemed, whenever Michael was in the same room as Samandriel and Adam wasn't there, Samandriel glared at Michael like he was about to kill him, or was figuring out where to hide his body: slightly quizzical but filled with intense hatred.
Day after day, Sam and Dean would try to console Michael while patronizing him about his actions. Gabriel, being fiercely protective over his older brother refused to forgive Michael. Cas, on the other hand, had a bit of sympathy, but not much, as his brother was bloody, battered, bruised and in a coma.
They still all went to school, as it would be even more stressful if any of them took a day off. For the seniors, it always felt like something good was missing. They all realized their feelings about Lucifer: none of them thought that he was some dictator, they all truly thought that he was a reckless, fun person to be around. If you wanted to see a practically invincible person do something incredibly stupid, then they could just do to him.
Every single day after school, Michael had headed to the hospital. Some of those days he wasn't allowed to see Lucifer, as there was always some Novak keeping him out, but after he explained everything, it got worse. He had no reasoning for as to why he cheated on Luce, no motive. However, no matter what, he still loved him. He loved Lucifer more than he loved himself and he just wanted what they had back.
On the sixth day, Michael went to see Lucifer and was finally allowed into the room by the Novaks. On the sixth day, as soon as Michael was by his side, Lucifer woke up.
He gasped, pulling as much air in as possible, eyes flicking open at last. Michael gasped in return, heart jumping in his chest as those bright blue eyes flickered towards him. Michael was immediately pushed out of the way and almost put of the room by the entire Novak family.
"Luce!" Gabe exclaimed. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm gonna go get a nurse," Cas said after patting Lucifer on the back, srushing past Michael and out of the room.
The family began fussing relentlessly over Lucifer, Michael watching from the back of the room with a small smile on his face, glad that his love was ok. The nurse came in and checked Lucifer's vitals, deeming him okay, but also good for another day of bedrest.
Gabriel whispered something in Lucifer's ear and his head turned towards Michael, "Sorry, but... who are you?"
And suddenly Michael's heart was broken again.
Lucifer's family all looked at him expectantly, but he didn't notice. He felt like the strings in his heart were snapping one by one, killing him slowly. He took a deep breath in and tried to sound upbeat and not like he was about to cry. "I'm Michael, a friend of yours. I... I'm sort of the reason that you're in here."
"You don't sound like a very good friend to me, then," Lucifer mused.
"More like not a good boyfriend, as I used to be more, until you ended up in here."
"So... what? You broke up with me and I ran away out of heartbreak and got hit by a car?" Lucifer said mockingly.
"Umm, not exactly." Michael briefly looked around the room until he noticed that no one would be willing to help him and turned back to Lucifer. "There was this guy, he was flirting with me and I didn't notice. Then he kissed me and for whatever reason I didn't push him back, despite being ready to gently let him down and you walked into the room. I won't say that you got the wrong idea, because well, you didn't. You saw exactly what you saw. Then you just walked out of the room and you had a panic attack in the hallway. I ran after you but you ran away. You were so busy getting away from me that you walked right into the road without looking and a car hit you and kept going. You passed out seconds after I called 911."
"So... you just figured you should break up with me after that?" Lucifer asked, tilting his head, and Michael tried his hardest to not find it endearing, his heart swelling anyways.
"No. After I called the ambulance, I said my boyfriend got hit by a car. You said, 'not your boyfriend anymore, asshole,' and then passed out," Michael ended with a shaky breath.
"Huh." Lucifer nodded, processing the information. "Well, it seems like you kinds deserved it."
"I did." Michael looked down, disappointed in himself.
"Could you guys give me a minute? Just me and him please?" Lucifer requested, looking at his family hopefully.
His family slowly cleared out and waited in the hallway, eavesdropping, and Michael moved closer to the bed.
"What would you say or do if I remembered you?" Lucifer asked, speaking softly.
Michael's heart clenched inside his chest at the reminder that the boy he loved didn't remember him. "I..." Michael began, thinking of what to say, "I would beg for forgiveness. I would say that I would do anything to make it up to you because I love you, no matter what."
Lucifer sighed, "I really wish I didn't remember you, because I feel like this façade is easier to hide behind and build from the beginning than to admit that...
"I remember you, Michael. I don't have amnesia, but I sort of wish I did."
