Chapter Twelve

I let out a hiss as a glass shard is yanked out of my arm. The pack doctor tosses it into a small metal bowl before looking over my face. "How did you get this much glass in your skin?" He asks, moving to take a fairly large fragment out of my shoulder.

"No idea. It was a car crash but I don't remember there being any windows in the back," I mutter, gritting my teeth against the pain.

"Alpha said you were being taken to the Cage?" the doctor asks.

"Yeah, they crashed the truck so I could escape."

"Now why would the Council bring an angel to the Cage? That place is only supposed to be for uncontrollable shifters and weres," he murmurs.

"I don't have any wings."

I frown a little at his immediate smirk. "Ah, I understand. Angels without wings are a rare and extremely dangerous breed," he drawls sarcastically.

"I was born with wings, the Council just took mine from me."

"They must be terrified of you. I've never heard of a child without wings."

"Do you know a lot about the angels?" I ask.

He nods. "I used to sit in on Council meetings when Alpha's mother was the leader of our pack. Before I became the pack doctor, I was the head warrior and the Alpha's lead advisor," he explains.

I grit my teeth as he pulls a tiny sliver of glass from my temple. "Did you know my parents?" I ask.

"What's your name?"

"Luciana Morgenstern."

His eyes widen. "Well, no wonder they wanted you dead," he mutters.

"Wait what do you m—"

I whip around just as the door opens. I laugh a little when Lila's head pokes in. "Sorry for the interruption Ana but Alpha requested that I bring you to your room."

I nod. "Okay," I turn back to the doctor but he just shrugs.

"You're all good, I can't find anymore glass. Come back if something starts bothering you, got it?"

"Yeah okay." I start to stand, hobbling awkwardly on my casted leg.

"Do you need any help?" Lila asks.

"Uh yes please," I mutter sheepishly.

He smiles. "I'm sorry," he says, letting me lean on him.

"Sorry for what?"

"I was supposed to make sure you weren't hurt and I obviously failed," he tells me.

My eyes widen in disbelief. "You can't possibly blame yourself for this. You had no way of knowing what would happen when the truck crashed."

"I'm the one who made the truck crash, so it is my fault whether or not you believe it to be," he replies.

I scowl. "You wolves are stubborn."

"We say the same thing about angels," he chuckles.

We step outside and my skin crawls as dozens of eyes land on me. I wait for them to go away but they follow me all the way to Daniel's house.

"Do I look like complete trash or something? Why are they staring?"

"Just the opposite I'm afraid."

I frown. "That's a bad thing?"

"Unmated werewolves can be very aggressive and disrespectful when it comes to pretty girls; it becomes a bigger problem when that pretty girl doesn't have a mate," he sighs.

"Will they back off if they know Daniel is my mate?"

He shakes his head. "It will discourage them for a short while but someone like you is irresistible. It's part of the reason Alpha sent me to be your escort—I already have a mate."

"Who's your mate?" I ask.

"His name is Hayden, he's the Beta of our pack."

"Wait does that mean you're a Beta?"

"Yes, but I don't let anyone call me that. My mate spent 20 years earning that title, it wouldn't be fair of me to take it simply because the Moon Goddess decided to be kind and give me a mate with a high rank," he says.

I smile a little. "That's very selfless of you."

He shrugs. "I like to call it being respectful."

He finally stops in front of a set of double doors in the middle of the hallway. "This one is your room, can you walk on your own?"

"Uh yeah, it hurts less now so I think I'll be okay," I murmur.

"Okay, I'll let you get changed then and if you'd like I can take you to the Alpha," he tells me.

"Thank you," I tell him with a small nod.

He bows his head before turning to stand guard at the end of the corridor.

I step inside and a small gasp leaves my lips. The room is huge—easily double the size of the one I had at the Academy. The connected bathroom is almost the same size as the room itself too.

I catch a glimpse of myself as I pass by the mirror and can't help but stare. My body is battered and bruised and covered in blood; it's been years since I was hurt this badly.

I carefully peel off my tank top and sweatpants—both sticky with dirt, blood, and sweat. I tear off my bra and underwear as well, grimacing at the smell.

I take a cool shower, gently rinsing off the blood and wincing when the water runs over the cuts. I wash my hair too, watching as the remaining hair dye runs down the drain with the blood.

It takes a while, but I finally manage to clean myself up without getting water in my cast or ripping any of my stitches. I wrap a soft towel around myself and hobble awkwardly out of the bathroom.

I blow out a heavy breath as I walk into the massive closet. It is already filled with clothes that look to be my size. I find a comfy pair of shorts and a light T-shirt in the closet along with some undergarments in the dresser.

I slip them on, humming a little when I notice they fit almost perfectly. I deftly braid my hair while I walk outside to where Lila is standing in the hallway. "So, where's Daniel?" I ask.

"He is with Diana in the training center," he says.

"Lead the way then," I tell him and he nods before taking me out of the house. As soon as we walk past the market, I feel all eyes on me again.

My gaze immediately lands on the group of young men. Their smirks and black eyes make my breath catch in my throat. They start to walk over but Lila growls at them, stopping them dead in their tracks.

"This is Alpha Daniel's mate," he warns and their eyes widen.

"I—we, uh, please accept our deepest apology Luna," the blond boy says, bowing his head deeply.

I give a tiny nod in return before walking away with Lila. "Why won't they stop calling me Luna?"

"Why wouldn't they? You're the alpha's mate."

"I can't be Luna because I can't ever be with Daniel, and being called Luna just keeps reminding me of that," I mutter.

"Oh". He is silent for the rest of the walk through the training center to a room filled with sparring equipment.

Diana is beating the hell out of one bag and I spot Daniel watching two men fight on a mat. He is wearing only a pair of shorts and I feel my heart flutter in my chest.

His back is to me and I subconsciously press my thighs together. I never would have thought of it, but apparently muscular backs are sexy as hell to me.

"Alpha," Lila calls, catching his attention.

He turns, his gaze locking with mine for a brief moment. I open my mouth to say something but then quickly decide otherwise.

He saunters over with a frown, his eyes moving up and down my body. I swallow hard when they swirl black with lust. "What are you wearing?" he demands with a low growl.

"Whatever I want," I reply shortly. "I had to wear sweatpants and a hoodie for ten years, even in the summer, so I'm going to take full advantage of this opportunity."

"Oh yeah, I filled your closet by the way, hope you like it," Diana chimes in as she walks over, wiping her sweaty face with a towel.

"Thank you. It's all very nice."

"If you're going to wear stuff like that you're going to have to keep Lila with you. He's my best warrior and the last thing I want is for some stupid wolf to try to take advantage of you," Daniel growls.

My nose wrinkles. "Do you wolves have no self-control?"

"A mate is supposed to help you learn to control your wolf so the unmated ones have very limited abilities in regard to that. Most of them give into their primal urges quite easily," Lila tells me.

"Awesome," I grumble in annoyance.

"Yeah, so he is going to keep an eye on you and make sure nothing happens, but you need to be careful as well," Daniel advises.

"Fine I'll just steer clear of the guys."

Lila laughs nervously. "You may want to stay away from the girls as well. That lack of self-control isn't limited to just the male wolves," he says.

"Wow you guys have issues," I mutter under my breath.

Daniel sighs. "Speaking of issues—the Council is already looking for you and I think they know you're here."

My eyes widen in realization. "Ah shit, I completely forgot about the trackers," I hiss angrily.

"Where are they?" He asks.

"I only know about three, one in my wrist, behind my ear, and another in my hip, I probably have several more though."

"You should be okay here, the council knows about me but they're afraid of starting a war between angels and werewolves, so they won't do anything too stupid."

"What happens if I get my wings again and they decide I am dangerous and important enough to start a war?" I ask and he lets out a heavy breath.

"Then we can only hope they want you so bad for a reason. And use that reason against them."

The corner of my lip quirks upward. "Well, if the abilities I had when I was a child are any indication of future abilities, then we have nothing to worry about."
