Chapter Thirty

This is so stupid. He won't care.

He was upset before because I lied to him.

Though he also shot me with a dart because he was scared of what I could do.

Being Lucifer's daughter doesn't make me any more powerful. I don't think.

"You're staring again."

Heat rushes to my cheeks and my gaze flicks up to his face. "I wasn't staring, I was just lost in thought," I murmur.

He raises his eyebrow. "Are you okay?"

I tell him I can't sleep. That's all.

"Is your leg bothering you?"

I pause for a moment before nodding. Daniel shifts a little beneath me, moving his arm out from under my legs. I lay sideways across his lap; he practically cradles me against his chest. My leg has to stay elevated so I tried to convince him to just sleep in his own room, but he insisted on staying with me on the couch.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" he asks softly, running his hand along the side of my face.

"I don't think so," I sigh. I try to readjust my position and gasp at the searing pain that instantly blooms in my knee. My head falls back and I squeeze my eyes shut. "Oh fuck that hurts," I breathe.

Daniel grips my hand tightly. "I'm sorry Ana, I wish I could take the pain away," he mutters.

"I thought mates could do that," I grit out.

He sighs. "Fully bonded mates can. A mark isn't quite enough to take away this much pain."

It eventually subsides but leaves behind a throbbing ache. "Well at least with my wings I'll heal faster," I mumble.

"You need to let them out if you want them to help heal you."

I crane my head to see Logan standing by the door. I didn't hear him come in. "What do you mean?" I ask.

"Have you not noticed that hiding your wings hides your power?"

I roll my eyes. "Well yeah of course but it doesn't affect my healing. Does it?"

He nods. "Your wings are particularly powerful, you need to let them out if you want to heal faster."

"Well okay then, looks like I'm going to have to get used to walking around with wings again," I mutter.

"Why are you always lurking?" Daniel suddenly asks as Logan starts to open the door.

"This is his house," I hiss. "He can lurk if he wants."

Logan smirks. "It's fine Luci. I move quietly, perhaps if your senses were better, you would have noticed when I entered the room."

My eyes fly wide, and I bite down hard on my tongue. Daniel growls under his breath, frowning when Logan leaves looking quite entertained with himself.

"Your uncle is mean," he mutters.

"Aw did he hurt the big bad alpha's feelings?" I tease, tapping him lightly on the nose.

"If the big bad alpha is hurt, it's because his luna is in pain," he growls, kissing me firmly. A small laugh escapes my lips making him growl again. "Are you calling me a liar?" He demands.

"Wha―I didn't even say anything!"

"You were thinking it."

I roll my eyes a little. "Fine whatever you say Mr. Big Bad Alpha. I'm going back to sleep now," I say, letting my head fall onto his shoulder.

"You mean you're gonna wait until I fall asleep and then start staring again?"

"I wasn't staring!"

"Seriously? You didn't tell him?"

"No," I mutter, glancing sideways at her.

She shakes her head. "What the hell is freaking you out so much Ana?"

I groan, running my hands roughly through my hair. "I don't know! I just can't stop thinking about how he freaked out when he found out I can control minds and I'm so worried he'll freak out even worse about this."

"Well then definitely don't think about what he'll say when he finds out that you can probably do even more than that."

"That's not funny!" I snap.

"Maybe not but your angry face is hysterical."

I glare murderously at her. "Keep pissing me off and I promise it won't be funny for long," I warn.

Her amusement falters. "I swear you get scarier every day," she mutters under her breath.

"Good." I adjust myself on the ground, gritting my teeth as I try to get my leg into a more comfortable position. My wings are stretched out, lazily resting on the grass. The breeze ruffles my feathers and sends pleasant shivers up my spine.

"Are you actually planning on doing anything out here? Or are you just going to sit in the sun?" Diana asks.

"I was thinking about practicing with this," I say, lifting the dagger in my hand, "but now I don't really have enough energy to stand up again."

She snorts and rolls over onto her stomach. "Just take a nap out here then, the weather's perfect and god knows both of us could use the rest," she mumbles, crossing her arms under her head.

I lay down on my back, splaying my wings out underneath me. The sun hits my face and I close my eyes, just letting the warmth wash over me.

"Ana?"

I squint against the light to see Daniel walking over. "What is it?" I ask.

"I need to go back to my pack."

I sit up. "What? Why?"

He sighs. "I need to make sure everyone is safe. The Council is bound to be upset by what we did and I can guarantee they know I helped you. I'm afraid they'll take it out on my pack," he explains.

"I thought you said they're not stupid enough to go to war with the wolves?" Diana chimes in.

"They don't have to start a war though. Killing me would start a war, attacking a few of my wolves would just seem like retaliation for capturing those angels," he says.

"We'll come with you—" I start to say but he cuts me off, shaking his head.

"Diana can't fly and you can't walk. You two need to stay here and recover. I won't be gone for too long, a couple of weeks at the most."

Since when is a couple of weeks a short time?

I rub at my nose. "What if they catch you? They almost killed me when we left last time."

"That's because they were tracking you. We never got that tracker out of your hip, remember?"

I frown. "Then how come they haven't found us here yet?"

He shrugs. "You'll have to ask Logan about that. There's something up with this place, it's basically invisible unless you already know where it is," he mutters.

I nod absentmindedly. My fingers are starting to turn green from picking at the grass; I almost want to start tearing out handfuls.

I take a deep breath and look back at him. "Are you sure you have to leave?" I ask.

He nods with a small smile. "Yeah. My pack is my responsibility, I have to make sure they're safe," he says.

"Can you find some way to let us know that you made it there okay?"

He crouches down beside me. "Of course, you two just focus on healing up, okay? Don't worry about me, I'll be fine," he says, kissing my forehead.

"Yeah right," I mumble. "When are you leaving?"

"In an hour, I just need to pack up some supplies," he says.

"Are you going to fly straight there?" I ask.

"I'm going to try, I have friends in a few packs around the world so I might stop to rest."

"Why didn't we stop in those packs when we were flying here in the first place?" Diana asks.

He sighs. "They're very strict about who passes their borders, they know me and they can tell exactly who I am but they wouldn't have allowed either of you onto their territory."

"That's rude," she grumbles.

He rolls his eyes with a small chuckle. "I'm going to go pack, I'll see you in a little while."

***

It feels so weird. I can barely remember the last time we were away from each other for more than a few hours. It feels like a lifetime ago.

"Wow, I actually kinda miss him already."

I glance over at Diana but she is staring up at the sky where Daniel disappeared just a few moments ago. "I wish he wasn't half werewolf," I admit.

"Why?"

"It just makes our relationship so much harder. He can't exactly choose between me or his pack."

I honestly don't know if I can live in a wolf pack though. And if he cares enough about them to make a trip around the world just to make sure they're okay, then I'm going to have to live there if I want to stay with him.

She sighs. "You have at least a few weeks before you have to deal with that so let's focus on something else for now—like figuring out what else you can do!"

"Will you let that go already?" I hiss in annoyance, turning to Logan who just smiles bemusedly. I put my arm over his shoulder as he picks me up. He carries me into the house, careful not to let my leg hit anything on the way into the living room.

I let out a sharp wince as he puts me down onto the lounge chair. He helps me put my leg up onto a short stack of pillows then disappears from the room.

"Oh come on! Can you please try?" Diana asks as she walks in.

"Why do you keep bothering me about this?"

"Because I'm bored," she moans, "and there's nothing to do around here—plus I want to practice my fire."

I rub my temples with a heavy sigh. "You can practice your fire by yourself now please just leave it alone and let me sleep," I mumble.

"You've been resting for months aside from the day you spent rescuing me."

I grit my teeth as irritation starts to fill my mind. Tread carefully Diana. "What's your point?"

"It's the perfect time to practice—you've got plenty of time to kill, nothing better to do and now you don't have to worry about Daniel finding out," she defends.

I make a face. "I can't even walk Diana, how am I supposed to practice anything?"

She groans, flopping down on her face. "You are the most pessimistic person I have ever met," she murmurs into the couch.

"It's called being realistic."

"Whatever."

***

Logan watches with a small frown. "Can you create it?"

"I've tried but I haven't been able to yet. I think I'm getting closer though," she says brightly.

She continues to play with the candle, pinching the flame between her fingers and dragging it through the air like a fiery ribbon. She splays her fingers and the flames envelop her hand.

"You should try it Ana," she murmurs, staring at the fire burning in her palm.

"Why?" I sigh.

"Because I bet you'll find it much more entertaining than simply controlling people."

I flick my wrist and she hits herself in the face. "Yeah no controlling people is way more fun," I remark with a small smirk.

She gapes at me and then looks to Logan who just shakes his head as he observes the exchange with a small smile.

"Did you just hit me in the face?"

"No, you hit yourself in the face."

"That's not fair."

"You started it." I shrug.

She goes silent as I turn back to the book in my hands. I flip back a few pages and start reading again, letting myself get lost in the world of dragons and werewolves.

Something flashes in the corner of my eye and I throw my arm up just as a ball of fire comes flying at me. I brace for the burning pain but it never comes.

I slowly lower my arm, staring with wide eyes at the flames crawling over my hand. Then I look up at Diana, fury coursing through my mind. "Did you just throw a fucking fire ball at me?"

"Hey it worked, now you can screw around with fire too," she smirks.

"And what if it hadn't worked? You could have burned my hand off!" I spit.

She throws her hands up in surrender. "Hey it was his idea!"

My gaze snaps to Logan. "Did you really tell her to do that?"

"Your father could control fire, I would be surprised if you could not."

I glance down at my hand. It's warm where the flames lick my skin but there is no pain at all as they move over my fingers. It almost seems to dance as I turn over my wrist. I didn't know my father had this ability. I wonder if he knew I was capable of it too.

"Wow," I murmur.

"See? It's so much better!" Diana laughs.

I glance up at her with a smirk. My fingers twitch and she hits herself in the face again. "Hey!"

"Nope mine's still more fun."
