ANEURYSM
A Grey's Anatomy Fanfiction.

Warm and close as fresh laundry and here we are, Tuesday. Of course you love me. You're wearing my socks.

DILYN CAGLE HAS ALWAYS HAD EVERYTHING.

Decades before Dawsyn Cagle turns the city of Seattle into a blazing supernova, her eldest — and only — sibling is born. A sister, Dilyn: a single tuft of auburn hair on her head, a crescent-shaped dent between her irises, a silver spoon in her mouth.

(These, her mother tells her, are like flowers. They are things that will grow as you do.)

And grow, she does; Dilyn ages with ease, with a precise sense of human nuclearity, just the way that she's been wired at her root to do. For years, she lies awake and feels her bones stretch and expand beneath porcelain skin, her veins funnel blood to each vital organ; each morning, she passes by the mirror and studies her manicured reflection, watching a fresh pool of freckles begin to conglomerate across the bridge of her nose and wondering what she will make with them. What she will make of herself.

At five years old, a medical miracle graces her sightline for the first time; at ten, she's brave enough to reach out and touch it. To bury it deep in her heart, to hold it and love it until it becomes a part of her being. In the springtime, when the trees begin to change and the flowers unfurl their buds, she thinks of her mother's prophecy; everything is bigger when it blooms. Herself, her love, and her longing. At eighteen, Dilyn graduates as valedictorian from the best STEM-focused high school in the northwest; at twenty-two, the salutatorian of New York University's esteemed Pre-Medical program. With the first changing of leaves comes an acceptance letter, four more years in the Big Apple at the NYU School of Medicine, and a whole new garden of saplings: a stellar grade point average, a coveted spot in Mount Sinai's post-graduate neurosurgery internship program, and a steamy summer fling with their most notable Plastic Surgeon in residence.

(But these. These are like weeds. You'll have to learn to grow around them.)

DILYN DOESN'T KNOW THAT SHE'S MISSING SOMETHING until a haphazard spill in the university's coffee shop lands her — quite literally — at the feet of Georgia McCrary, an Atlanta native with a heart of gold and a familial addiction to heroin. Over time, a weekly MCAT study session turns into a pair of signatures on a lease for a single-room loft in the slummiest part of the city, then twin open-mouthed smiles and matching acceptance letters permanentized beneath the corners of a photograph, then a routine night-crawl out of Mark Sloan's window and into Georgia McCrary's bed, where she's consistently awaited by wandering hands and unwavering gazes caught in the tangibility of dusk in the City That Never Sleeps.

Dilyn Cagle has a perfect brain, and Georgia McCrary is one irreversible aneurysm.

BUT FOR GEORGIA, DILYN WOULD DO ANYTHING. Beneath the wreckage of a city that is reeling from unspeakable tragedy, two young medical students plant themselves in the soil of a concrete jungle and grow into something new and exotic, a strain of foliage that Dilyn's mother never taught her how to care for. Unbeknowst to Katherine Cagle, her daughter has become something of a commodity to the New York medical scene, a deformity in the city's botanical makeup. Her garden is withering beneath her own feet; she's unsure what to make of it, she's watering both flowers and weeds. She doesn't even realize that she's planted a rotten seed until Mark Sloan becomes the subject of New York's latest illicit affair and Georgia McCrary is laying on an operating table, lifeless, smothered by the very thing that she'd tried so hard to grow out of.

Left alone in the hospital gallery as her best-friend-turned-paramour-lover is zipped up into a body bag and shuttled off to the morgue, Dilyn thinks again of her mother's words. Of neurology, of the things that New York would bestow upon her daughter, of every unsaid that has ever lingered like a herbicide on Katherine Cagle's tongue.

Just as one deceased plant can take others down with it, the months following Georgia's death find Dilyn — a girl with her entire life ahead of her — stagnant, virtually pulseless.

WHEN AN ANEURYSM CEASES, EVEN AN ABOVE-AVERAGE BRAIN CAN STILL BE LEFT WITH NOTHING.
