Just Another Day At Work

Lieutenant Commander Annabeth Chase, Chief Science Officer, USS Athena

Stardate 2376.02

Location: Sirius Sector Block - Odyssey Class Dreadnought - USS Athena NCC-2103 - Deck 2 - Crew Cabin 15

At point 05:00 Ship time, Annabeth was aroused by the alarm that she had set when she had first come on board nearly twenty-four hours ago. She sat up and glanced left, out of one of the large windows that lined the cabin's wall. It looked as if stars were zipping by the window but Annabeth knew that those were only particles, supercharged by the warp bubble that surrounded the Athena.

The blond Science Officer sat up and climbed out of bed, wearing her undergarments. "Computer, turn on lights."

The lights turned on and Annabeth looked around her cabin, taking everything in. She hadn't actually paid much attention to it earlier. It was big for a one-person cabin, complete with bathroom and shower and, of course, the main room that served as the study, living room, and bedroom in one. She had barely unpacked and so everything was bare. After taking a quick shower and brushing her teeth, Annabeth pulled on her uniform. Then she pinned her rank Insignia, two golden buttons and one black one, to her chest.

Black shoes and a blue long-sleeved shirt. Over the shirt, she pulled a black jacket. Above her collarbone, the jacket walls were made of a gray upholstered material. In Annabeth's opinion, the new uniform looked a lot better than the pajamas Starfleet used to wear. Then she pinned her rank insignia to the collar of her blue shirt.

Then she secured her long, golden blond hair in a high ponytail and checked her appearance in the mirror. Showered, check. Brushed hair, check. Uniform, check, check. Rank Insignia, check.

So, after gazing back into her cabin one last time and looking forward to the chance to properly move in, she closed the door and headed down the long hallway over to the turbo lifts.

"Aft, deck five," Annabeth ordered.

"Wait!" someone yelled and Annabeth instinctively shoved her arm through the doors before they closed.

Another woman, around her age, in a Command uniform hurried into view. She was a slender, very pretty, native American female with kaleidoscope-like eyes and hair that looked like she had cut them herself with safety scissors. She also had a feather tied into one strand of her hair. Annabeth saw the rank markings and sharply snapped to attention, her hands folded behind her back.

The other girl looked at her slightly surprised and then blushed, "At ease, Lieutenant Commander. Well, I'm Piper McLean, First Officer."

Annabeth's relaxed her stance. "Good morning Commander."

"Morning, who are you again? Wait! You are Annabeth Chase, aren't you?" The girl asked with sparkling eyes.

"Yes, ma'am."

Piper made a throwaway movement with her hand. "You can call me Piper when we are alone."

Annabeth relaxed some more, "Well, in that case, you can call me Annabeth. Sorry, but do we know each other?"

Piper snorted. "Well, we haven't met in person. I am a friend of Percy's and he may have mentioned you occasionally. We had a lot of time to talk back on Prometheus. You know how they say it. War is ninety-five percent boredom and five percent fear and well, we were cabin mates."

Annabeth's eyes narrowed. "He mentioned me?"

Piper smirked and stepped into the lift, letting the door close behind her. "I quote; she is the smartest person I've ever met. Guess what, T'soni, our Second Officer took that personal. She is a Vulcan."

Annabeth chuckled. She was quite sure that a lot more had been said about her but didn't press the matter. Things that were shared in the foxhole, stayed in the foxhole. Even if that foxhole was some cabin on the Prometheus between the many horrific battles.

"So, you're going for breakfast?" Piper asked.

"Yes, Ma'am," Annabeth replied automatically. "Sorry, I mean, Piper."

"Do you mind if I join you? I haven't eaten anything in twenty-four hours and the kitchens clearly told me that only the Captain gets room deliveries."

Annabeth chuckled, "By all means. So, it seems like you aren't up to scratch yet on our Senior Officers?"

Piper groaned, "Unfortunately not. The final appointments were made less than twenty-four hours before departure and I haven't had a free moment yet to go over the list. Most were on the bridge yesterday, though. Now I met you, that only leaves the Security Chief, Chief Engineer, and the Command Crew of the USS Midsummer Night, our Aquarius class escort. I just recognized you from the stories. You know, scary gray eyes and blond curls. T'soni is up to date though," Piper admitted.

"Well, I'm sure a good meal will make you feel better."

Piper nodded in silent agreement and the lift door opened again and the two Senior Officers stepped out and joined the slow stream of crew members on their way to the mess. She didn't spot any of the civilians in the hallways, but then again, it wasn't even half past five.

They headed into the mess, grabbed trays and walked over to the kitchen to get their breakfast which happened to be bacon and eggs with toast and a large glass of orange juice.

They headed back into the mess and sat down at a table close to the where she had stood the previous evening.

"I love the new cabin design," Annabeth admitted.

"You haven't seen anything yet. You should see Percy's quarters," Piper said and took the first bite of her meal.

"Let me guess, it puts the staterooms to shame?" Annabeth asked smiling and also dug in.

"What gave it away?" Piper asked.

They ate in relative silence before returning their dishes to the kitchen. "So, Lieutenant Commander. Shall we report to the bridge? If I remember correctly, there will be a briefing at 06:00 with all senior officers. Then, after that, you have a meeting with the leaders of the Scientific staff if I remember correctly."

Annabeth sighed, "And there I was, hoping for a nice, coffee filled day on the bridge in a comfortable chair."

Piper smiled, "Don't worry, you will spend a lot of time in that comfortable chair and if you are only half as smart as Percy said you are, you might also get to be in command of the fourth shift."

Annabeth smiled, "Well, we should hurry up then."

They returned to the turbo lifts and took the first one up to the bridge. Surprisingly, it was a different style than the oversized, two deck version of the Odyssey but it was still state of the art and pretty big.

The main command was in the center. The back of the bridge was raised up by about two feet and the rear half of the bridge was occupied by five large screen sections, each with three terminals. Left were Science and Scanners. The back one was the damage control screen and the right ones looked like engineering consoles. The center of the bridge was set slightly lower. A large console was aesthetically placed at the front, occupied by two officers, one of which she recognized as Leo. He was manning the helm. The other one was manned by a female Petty Officer.

The Navigators seat next to him was occupied by a dark-haired woman with pale skin but Annabeth didn't recognize her. Behind that, set a step higher and separated by about two meters were the Tactical and the Electronic warfare console, also manned by two people she didn't recognize. Then, set above that, and on level with the back of the bridge was the Captain's chair.

The person currently in charge of Athena was a young, female Vulcan that looked like she was around Annabeth's age. She was slender and was rather beautiful in a hard, angular way. Her skin tone was similar to that of Piper's and her long hair was dark brown. She had a rather pointed chin. That and her slanted eyebrow fit in smoothly with her pointed ears.

The woman stood up from the chair when Piper entered. "Commander, the bridge is yours."

Piper smiled, "Very well T'soni. I suggest you go and have dinner down in the mess before the briefing."

"Yes, Ma'am. Lieutenant Commander Chase," the Vulcan curtly greeted her and then briskly disappeared in the turbolift they had just vacated.

Piper walked over to the Captain's chair and sat down, looking rather pleased with herself. "Chase, report to the Captain's office."

"Yes, Ma'am," Annabeth replied and briskly walked across the bridge towards the office door on the right side of the bridge.

Captain Percy Jackson, Commanding Officer USS Athena.

Location: Sirius Sector Block - Odyssey Class Dreadnought - USS Athena NCC-2103 - Deck 1 - Ready Room

Percy Jackson relaxed into in the chair behind his desk and smiled down at his computer screen. When it was turned off it only looked like a slab of glass but right now it showed a live feed image of his mother in his mother's and step father's living room

"So, how was your first day so far?" Percy's mother asked nervously.

Percy smiled, "Great, my chair is awesome."

Sally Blofis smiled weekly. "Good to know you liked it. Did you put the cookies in a stasis field?"

Percy chuckled, "Of course. For bad times. Piper stole half of them!"

Sally smiled weakly, "That is because they were for her. I still can't believe that you'll be gone for two whole years. You'll be careful, right?"

Percy smiled gently, "Of course Mother. Relax, Athena is a very powerful ship and I am simply awesome. I'll be back before you know it."

Sally sighed.

"So, Chloe is at school?"

Sally nodded, "Yes, of course. Don't you dare call her tough? That girl needs to pay attention."

"Of course Mother," Percy promised. "I need to go now. A ship doesn't run itself," Percy then announced.

"Okay. Be careful now. I love you and will pick you up from the Spaceport in two years."

"I love you too and I sure hope so. Goodbye."

"Bye Percy," Sally replied.

Percy ended the call and immediately scrolled up his contact list, looking for his sister's icon.

Then he pressed his finger on the contact and opened the call. It beeped for a moment until his sister's face appeared. She was a cute, with sandy blond hair and blue eyes. One strand of her hair dyed neon purple.

"Hello, Chloe. Am I interrupting something important?"

"Of course not. Just math. Wait for a moment, I need to leave the classroom."

"Chloe put that thing away. Now!" a seriously annoyed sounding adult yelled from off-screen.

"I'm sorry. My brother is calling. I'll be right back!" she called back and the screen went dark.

Finally, a few moments later, the screen lit up again and Chloe reappeared.

"Okay, I'm back now. So, what's up?" Chloe asked.

"Can't I say goodbye to my sister?"

Chloe shrugged, "I guess so."

Percy was just about to say something when a small window popped up on the bottom of his screen, accompanied loud beeping.

"Fuck," Percy muttered, ignoring his mother's orders to mind his language around Chloe.

"What?" Choe asked.

"Something is up. I have to go again," Percy explained, recognizing the caller ID.

Chloe looked at him slightly exasperated. "You have got to be kidding me!"

"Chloe, I have an Admiral on the line and Admirals don't like to be kept waiting," Percy explained.

The fifteen-year-old sighed, "Well, in that case, you are forgiven. Percy, you take care of yourself out there, you hear me. I love you."

"I love you too. Goodbye. USS Athena out."

Chloe blew him a quick kiss just before the Captain ended the call and setting the pop-up window to the center of the screen, sitting up straight, and taking the call.

A moment later he found himself staring at a middle-aged woman in Admiral's uniform that held a striking resemblance to Annabeth Chase. She even had the same eye color as Annabeth. However, unlike Annabeth, who had long, curly, golden blond hair this woman had dark hair.

"Admiral Athena, what can I do for you?" Percy greeted the flag officer.

"Greetings Captain, I am just calling you to check in. I trust everything is going well so far?" Athena asked.

Percy nodded, "Yes Ma'am. Everything is peachy over here. We are still unpacking many things but we are online. Do you have any Orders of Deployment or is this actually a social call?"

Athena smiled and raised her hands in mock surrender. "You caught me. Now, I put a lot of trust in you by entrusting you with my daughter's safety for the next two years and seeing as she doesn't actually talk to me I would like to know if you know how she is doing."

Percy sighed. Athena wasn't the first worried parent he had dealt with over the last view hours but she was the only one that outranked him. In other words, he couldn't ignore her. That and Athena had been rather supportive of him since their time together in a disabled rescue pod during the Dominion war.

"I fear I have to disappoint you, Ma'am. All hands are on board and accounted for so she is on board but I haven't seen her yet. She should report in for duty very soon, though."

Athena sighed, "Well, I trust that you will, to the best of your abilities, make sure that my daughter returns home alive."

Percy inclined his head slightly, "I will just like I will with every other member of my crew."

Athena chuckled, "Very well captain. I hope you have a pleasant voyage. We will have our next chat in two years I believe. Good luck."

"It was a pleasure to talk with you. USS Athena out," the Captain ended the call and leaned back in his chair. Who would have thought that he would spend most of his first day sitting at a desk?

Percy was just about to get back to work, which was going through the list of cadets and assigning them to the many different departments while taking personal wishes and grades into account when the door alert to his office whistled.

Hazel Levesque. Percy looked up her file and assigned her to the Aquarius class escort that was currently docked in specially designed docking slot at Athena's aft. Commander Ramírez-Arellano, who was responsible, and in command of the Escort could put her to good use.

Frank Zhang? Seeing as their names often turned up in each other's files Percy also assigned Zhang to the USS Midsummer Night.

"Come in!" Percy called and closed the ship's personnel roster.

The door opened and a very familiar girl with golden blond curls and startling gray eyes entered the room. The door closed behind the young woman closed and she stopped in front of his desk and stood at attention.

"Lieutenant Commander Annabeth Chase reporting for duty," Annabeth said stiffly.

Percy raised an eyebrow and leaned back in his chair, "At ease and take a seat."

Annabeth's stiff posture relaxed and she sat down in one of the three chairs on the opposite side of his desk.

Annabeth sat down in the chair facing Percy. Until now it hadn't actually felt real. Sure, she knew Percy was in charge but now that he was sitting across from her, as her Commanding Officer....

"Captain?" Annabeth asked.

Percy groaned, "Annabeth, it sounds weird when you call me Captain. You can call me Percy when we're alone."

Annabeth sighed in relief. Standing at attention every time she and Percy were in the same room would have been beyond awkward. "Congratulations on making Captain. I would have called but I only learned of your promotion when I was transferred to Athena," Annabeth said.

"No problem. Congratulations on making Lieutenant Commander," Percy said and Annabeth cracked a smile.

"Thanks."

Percy leaned back in his chair. "You weren't on the bridge yesterday," he noticed.

"Sorry about that. I just had a first class view from the deck five restaurants. They also had good drinks," Annabeth replied apologetically.

"Ohh no problem. So, are you in the mood to do some catching up over some drink in the Ten Forward tonight? It's been what, five years?"

Annabeth sighed, "Sorry Percy. I already have plans for after shift. Another time?"

"Bummer. Well, now that you've reported in we should get to our meeting."

Percy pressed the pin-on Starfleet insignia that doubled as a communicator.

"Commander Mclean, would you summon all senior officers to the briefing room."

"Will do, sir. Mclean out," Piper replied within seconds.

"Well, Lt. Commander Chase, ready to meet your new co-workers?" Percy asked and got up from his chair.

"Yes, sir," Annabeth replied smiling and also got up.

"Uhm, before we go. Would you mind telling me all the names? I already met Mclean, Beauregard, Valdez, and T'soni."

"Of course not. Well, Chief Beckendorf is our Chief Engineer. Lieutenant Commander LaRu is our Chief of Security. Commander Ramírez-Arellano commands our Aquarius- class escort and Lieutenant Grace is her XO. That should be it." Percy summed up.

"Thank you, I look forward to meeting them," Annabeth said and they left the office and joined Piper and Leo on their way to the Conference room on deck two and stepped into a conference room with an oval table. Percy sat down at the head of the table while Piper sat down to felt. Annabeth took a seat on the opposite side and Leo sat down next to Piper.

Here we go. I know, not much interesting stuff happened. That will change next chap. If you spot any mistakes then point them out.... vote and review and stuff.

Hope you enjoyed yourself.

WinterWolf over and out.
