The Nexus (Entry)

I left school, but I didn't go to my Abode. I had a few Credits with me because I didn't bother to purchase any lunch. That chip I saw in my SmartSpecs, it was important. And for some reason, I had a feeling it was important for me.

OUCH!

I walked along the streets, dodging WA's as if I were a fugitive. I might as well have been, underage androids aren't allowed to be outside unless they are at school. So every android I saw who would care to question my presence on the streets, I avoided.

Why was I walking through the city? You can't break into maximum security governmental and scientific central without tools, can you? I headed further down the straight road until I arrived at a fork. I remembered that fork well. My Father Unit Caretaker 1 purchased a weapon from a store down the left-hand of this fork. I proceeded, still being mindful of my cover. I opened the door to the weapon store and was greeted by the scent of raw and steaming metal. Along with that greeting, I saw the store owner. He was staring at me, with a confused look. That meant he was a WA (Wealthy Android). WA's are like AMA's, except, WA's don't necessarily have to be rich. Once they have acquired one extra feeling, they are considered WA's.

I had to act like any other lifeless android. I made a blank face and walked completely mechanical towards him. He looked down at me and said," Aren't you supposed to be at your Abode little one?"

I kept the blank expression and spoke, "My Father Unit Caretaker 1 gave me instructions to purchase some items. He said I was to tell you that he works for the Nexus and that the items are needed badly." I waited for him to reply. He looked at me very apprehensively. He'd been giving me a lot of looks. Business must have been good for him, he had a lot of feelings. He looked at the door then at me and then nodded toward the rest of the room. That was a test. "I do not comprehend what that body gesture means." He looked a bit more comfortable then. You see, if I were 'normal' android, I would not have been able to process the meaning of his body movements.

"Go on, find the items."

I went deep into the store, as far as I could from him. Then I looked around for what I would need. I saw a sash-like material that had black circles around it. I didn't know what it was but it intrigued me. I stepped forward and a hologram booted up and explained the item, "This item is a Smoke Grenade Holster and Re-generator," the holographic Female Android model said. Smoke grenades would be perfect. I took them up and continued. I need firepower, but not noticeable firepower. It needs to be easily accessible and rechargeable. Then it came to my eyes, the black, sinewy-looking globes glistened in the light of the store. Lethal Laser Gloves. I took them up, of course. Everything from that point was just for assurance, small disposable weaponry and shielding items. I took the selected items to the owner, and his eyes marvelled at what I brought him. If you don't expect people to buy his stuff, why sell it?

"What is your Father Unit Caretaker 1 doing with these items young one?" He asked, cashing them.

"That is classified information," I said, taking my goods and leaving the store. Sometimes it's good being senseless, you aren't expected to talk to people you don't want to as much.
I headed to my Abode and prepared for the night to come.

I strapped on the Smoke-Grenade Sash from my shoulder to my waist and used its extra holster capabilities to hold some extra items. I put on the gloves and they whirred and beeped like crazy. I wasn't surprised, almost all weapons do a Bio-check before usage. Then I took out the Multifunctional Goggles I'd also picked up at the store. You never know. They rested on the top of my head, laying perfectly above my forehead.

My Caretaker Units were out. At the Nexus. Yeah, they are related to the dictator-guy of Andropolis. He's actually my uncle. But who cares?

It didn't hurt that time.

OUCH!

Never mind.

I walked out of my Abode easily. No one is on the streets at night. It's not a normal thing. The only androids out now are the Patrol. I have to watch out for them. I began my stealthy mission by creeping from my doorway and sighting the Nexus. It shone beautifully at night, its white structure just as visible and illuminate at dusk.

I hid behind a garbage bin and re-thought my route, just to be safe. Follow the white road. It always leads back to the Nexus. So I went.

I ran on the sidewalk, my legs moving almost too mechanical for my cellular counterparts to cope, but there was no slowing down. I had to get to the Nexus as early as possible.

Pit-pit-pat. Pit-pit-pat.

My shoes were discreet and sharp against the marble of the road now, as I stepped down to cross. A light flickered in the distance. Oh no. Patrol. I quickly dodged the Hover-V (Hover Vehicle) and hid behind another garbage bin. It stopped and did an assessment of the street quarter, then started up again. Without thinking, I ran under the vehicle and turned on my magnetic function on the gloves. As the vehicle moved, I hitched a ride. You see, all Hover-V's return to the Nexus. What better way to get there than a free taxi ride?

It took an hour and forty-five minutes to get to the Nexus. The vehicle stopped all of a sudden and I began to hear voices. The androids that were speaking weren't those that were before, the ones operating the Hover-V. They must have been the security of the Nexus. I heard a low, almost forced laughter. They were having a casual conversation, great.

After their little meet and greet, the vehicle slowly moved forward. Somewhat cautiously maybe. It tilted forward, giving me a better view of the behind. We had just entered the lower levels of the Nexus. A parking lot? The vehicle came to an abrupt stop, and footsteps slowly died down.

That must be them leaving.

Then it hit me. The vehicle would turn off soon. When it does, it'll land completely, crushing me in the process!

I rolled from under the Hover-V just before it was able to crush me. It landed with a soft, swishing sound.

Back to incognito. I looked around the lot for any signs of security, but none yet. Still, I wasn't going to be complacent. I ducked between vehicles, making sure the coast was clear. Then something else hit me.

I've been getting hit by a lot of things lately.

The program in my head paused a bit, I couldn't afford to be zapped at this point. I waited for it, wait...

OUCH!

With that painful sting to the head, I recalled my thoughts from before.

I was down there, in the lower levels of the Nexus, with no clue where to go.

"D2N1! Wait up!" A voice echoed throughout the empty lot. It was one of the same voices I heard speaking before I entered. I peeked over a vehicle and saw the android run into an elevator where another android stood.

That must be it.

After making sure no one else was there, I sprinted over to the elevator. I reached up to press the button, my light fingers feathering it, when-

"I told her, she couldn't program a phone to want her!" Loud, boisterous laughs blared throughout the parking lot as two more securities turned the corner to the elevator. I was too quick, sliding under a vehicle nearby. I was quick but clumsy.

I'll keep that in mind. I'm losing time.

I had to think. Fast. More action than thought came through, as I sprinted into the elevator before it closed and I became the centre of the rectangular room. A little less than a second later, I activated a smoke grenade and put on my goggles. I could see perfectly with them on. Basic fighting took place. Well, it was more like me hitting them while they tried to block my moves.

Ding!

The elevator doors opened and the smoke crawled out. The bodies of the two securities fell forward and I stepped out triumphantly.

You'd think they'd be able to take on a kid.

I joked with myself, stepping out into what seemed to be a corridor. The joke swirled in my head, sending my cellular composition into a frenzy. I was trying to laugh, but I was incapable of it. I did achieve it once or twice in my sleep though, but I couldn't then. Through my awkward sounds, my sight became somewhat obscured, so I walked blindly through the straight corridor. Then the goggles picked up something. But I didn't need the goggles to tell me what it was.

Or better yet...

What they were.
