Chapter 1
Andres's pov
"Faye, Cadence! Stay out of my room!"
I heard Azul yell at my other two sisters as they laughed and ran from Azul's room. I walked past the with a piece of cheese in hand.
"Hey Andres! What's that!"
"Cheese."
"Yum!"
Faye took my cheese and ran off. I walked back to the kitchen where Tia Julieta was making dinner. I took another piece of cheese from her bowl.
"Andres, I already gave you cheese. I need that for my arepas. Dinner will be ready soon."
I put the cheese back silently and took a piece of bread when she wasn't looking. I walked back to my room and place the bread on the floor. Unlike my sisters and their huge magic rooms, I had a small room with a fireplace, big arm chair, and my witchcraft supplies. Compared to everyone else, I don't need a bunch of stuff. I sleep in my arm chair since it's big enough, eliminating the need for a bed.
From a hole in my wall, my dark gray rat, Mateo ran out and ate the piece of bread.
"Hey Mateo."
I smiled at my best friend as he ate. After Tio Bruno passed, Tia Pepa banned rodents from the house, save for my Tio Antonio's room. Mateo lived in a space Casita made behind my wall.
"Tia won't be happy about this."
I turned my neck to see my cousin Bruno smirking behind his book.
"Yeah, she wouldn't."
He gave a small laugh, fixed his glasses and left my room. Bruno II blackmailed me every chance he got. It was never difficult to figure out what he wanted. Mateo scurried back into the wall after a quick pet. I looked in my mirror to fix myself. My hair was pitch black and messier than Tia Mirabel's, going slightly past my ears. I pushed my glasses up my nose and fixed my clothes. I wore a simple dark green sweater, black pants, and rundown shoes.
With how problematic my sisters are, I tried to be, to quote Tia Pepa, normal. I rarely asked for things, I didn't pester my dads with my problems, and I didn't make a fuss about what happened around me. To everyone, I'm the quiet kid they don't have to worry about. I can take care of myself to the extent that my dads forget about me half the time. I suppose that means I'm doing a good job making myself the least troublesome of the family. Even Bruno II is more trouble than me, since he gets into trouble with Primo Alejandro.
I ruffled my hair and adjusted my glasses one more time before making my way to the dining room. Bruno II was eating slowly because his nose is still stuck in his book. Faye and Cadence ran in chased by Azul. Their hair was bright purple, and their skin was green. Papa and Padre walked in and started fussing over Azul.
(Papa is Camilo and Padre is Damien)
Papa: Azul, what happened?
Azul: I was practicing a color changing spell, and those two ran in and made me cast it wrong!
Padre: Well, the hair suits you. Let's get you cleaned up.
Padre led Azul out of the dining room to his room. Papa started scolding Faye and Cadence. I stood up silently and watched to the kitchen. I didn't feel like hearing the Problem Duo get scolded.
"Andres, good timing. Carry these plates to the dining room."
I nodded and gave my Tia a smile. I held two hot plates in my hands as I walked to the kitchen. I could've gone faster, but I would've gotten scolded myself for using my gift at the table. I put a plate of arepas near Papa's seat and the plate of biscuits near Silkie's seat.
Silkie doesn't like me. I don't really know why. She's fourteen years older than me and the Problem Duo, but she gets along with those two well enough. She doesn't do anything openly hostile but she'll refuse me little kindnesses like helping me clean or helping me stand after falling.
She gave me an eye roll and continued talking to Cadence and Faye. Padre and Azul got back, with Azul's skin back to normal, but their short hair was still bright purple. I sat down and got two arepas, one of which was put into my pocket for Mateo. I watched Padre and Papa joke around with Tias' Mirabel and Valeria. Alejandro was having an animated discussion with Tia Isabella about plants, or whatever. Azule was speaking to Tia Julieta. Cadence was talking to Faye. Bruno II didn't talk, just read his book, occasionally looking up and locking eyes with me.
I didn't figure out what he wanted yet. But if the excited gleam in his eye was anything to go by, I would figure it out soon. Azule, passed me something up the table. I quickly stuffed it into my pocket to look at later. I got up and went to the bathroom. Casita tried to make me go back to the dining room.
"Casita, I have to pee, I'll be done in a minute."
After finishing my business, Casita moved her tiles to get me to the kitchen faster. I caught the tail end of the birthday song. Cadence and Faye blew out the candles on a large chocolate cake.
Tia Isabella: Happy birthday girls!
'What?'
Tio Antonio: How's it feel to be sixteen?
'What about me?'
Papa: My babies are growing up so fast.
'Papa, am I still your baby too?'
Tia Valeria: Mama Sofia would be proud of her grandchildren.
'Would she be proud of me too?'
Tia Luisa: You two are just like your Papa when he was your age.
'Am I like Papa?'
Padre: I'm so lucky to have a pair of twins like you two.
My thoughts froze, as did my breathing. I could feel physical pain in my chest. I was forgotten on my own birthday. I left the room at my fastest speed, leaving the house, only stopping, because I ran into a tree. I broke down crying for the first time in ten years.
"Tio Bruno, I wish you were still here!"
I cried my heart out until I grew tired. I ran back to Casita and straight to my room. I locked the door from the inside throwing myself at my chair. I took out the paper Azule gave me before I left. I suppose they're the family member I'm closest to after tio Bruno died.
"Hey bro, I have to take a raincheck on our duel tomorrow. Padre is going to show me advanced water magic tomorrow. Love, your eldest and best sibling, Azule."
That's right...Azule was a Water Witch, just like Padre. I was a Fire and Nature Witch. When Tia Mirabel performed the ritual to bind me as her student, I was teleported to my mindscape. She didn't come with me, so I only told her I was a Nature Witch. I never practiced my fire affinity because it was harsh. Angry and wild. Whenever I tried to practice it, it alway reminded me of the years of neglect and mistreatment. I was so angry when I accidently used my fire magic. I was highly proficient and a quick learner when it came to my nature magic and received my final staff when she finished teaching me nature magic.
It was an ivory staff with flowery vines carve from the sharp bottom to the top. A large emerald that absorbed Tia's magic for my entire training period. I glared at the damn thing and smashed it on the wall. I fell to the ground and hugged my knees, crying heavily. After an hour, I got up, locked my door, and went to sleep.
