Chapter 19: Punishment Escalation
3rd Person's POV:
Back at Heartslabyul, both Trey and Cater watched helplessly as Riddle began to discipline another resident. "Laws of the Queen of Hearts, No 249 states: "The one in charge of feeding the flamingo must wear pink." You were supposed to be in charge of the flamingos today. Where is your pink clothes? Why aren't you wearing it?" Riddle questions the poor, trembling student kneeling before him. The student hesitantly looked up at his Dorm Leader, tears threatening to spill from his eyes.
"My deepest apologies, Dorm Leader... I-It's being washed! Please don't cut off my head!" The student begged him, pleading for him to not cast his brutal judgement onto him. That he would spare him and let him go. He was terrified. He didn't want to be beheaded. He promised. He promised he'd do better from now on, just please let Riddle forgive him! ... Unfortunately, judgement had already been made. Riddle narrowed his eyes at his cowering subject and coldly said, "This us the second time you've broken the rules. I can no longer overlook it."
"OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!"
The student screamed as the collar locked itself in place tightly around his neck. He struggled and tried to take it off, but no matter what he did, it would budge, and it refused to let him go. "Make a 5000-word written apology and weed the garden for a week. Then I will gladly unseal your magic." The collared student sobbed, "... That's..." Riddle narrowed his eyes and crossed arms, "I'm not taking your head because I want to! It's because you all break the rules! Enforcing the rules is for your own benefit. Understood?" Riddle then turned to Trey and Cater.
"Trey. Cater. Take him outside." "... Yes, Dorm Leader." Trey and Cater softly say as they helped the sobbing student up to his feet and took him outside. Alone, Riddle sighed and sat down muttering, "Honestly... these students... why can't they see that I am doing all of this for the good of our dorm...." Suddenly the memory of Andie's face popped into his mind, Riddle's eyes widened in shock.
"My dorm may not be as fancy or as high class as yours or any other dorms.... But at least at my dorm, I will always be there for my friends, no matter what. Even if everyone here finally obeys and follows every rule you enforced on them, in the end... you'll only end up being all alone."
"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UUUP!" Riddle growled out angrily, trying to remove the memory of the platinum blond haired student who has managed to get on his nerves. "Why...." He thought angrily, "why does her words get to me so?" He grip on the arm chair tightened as he said with gritted teeth, "Well she is wrong... absolutely wrong... and I am... I AM ALWAYS RIGHT!"
*Drip Drip Drip*
The next day, at the library, Trey was walking through the isles, returning the recipe book he had borrowed yesterday for the mont blanc, not that the cake was enjoyed anyway. He couldn't help but feel guilty over what happened to Ace, Deuce, and the other residents who were collared by Riddle. He gave a long sigh... So many... Just how many students has Riddle collared now..? He honestly didn't know... he had lost count. He let out a sigh. What should he do? Is there something... anything he can do? What..? Trey wasn't sure if there was much of anything he could do. How could he say anything against Riddle of all people? Even so...the weight of his guilt and regret have been piling on his shoulders for years now...
Trey looked a bit in a daze, and was about to pick another book when...
"Trey-senpai."
Trey was surprised when he saw Andie, Ace, Deuce and Grim, who all already changed out of the Heartslabyul dorm outfits and back into their school uniforms, and the guilt from yesterday resurfaced. "It's you guys..." "We figured you'd come to the library to return the cookbook for the mont blanc and camped out here." Deuce explained, "We really can't agree with the way Riddle is doing things." Ace said, getting straight to the point. Trey wasn't surprised, he knew that sooner or later they would come and talk to him about this. But... he won't have any much to say. He hung his head and closed his eyes, taking a breath, "... I bet." Trey agreed giving another deep sigh.
"What do you really think about him since you were kids, have you always been so subservient to him?" Ace asked him. This time, Trey shot up his head to look at his juniors in surprise but then he narrowed his eyes and went on the defensive, "Who did you hear that?" He questioned. "From a guy named Che'nya." Andie answered, "Che'nya... Ah, that guy." Trey said, visibly confused at how his juniors could meet someone like Che'nya, but then remembered that he likes to pop out every now and again to come to see him and Riddle for a chat.
"Aren't you also older than Riddle? Just get angry at him." Grim questioned him. A little irritated that, as someone who was Riddle's friend, could be so lenient and allow Riddle to act the way he does now. Trey shook his head and gave a soft smile, but only for a moment, "I'd do it if iI felt it was necessary. But... I can't bring myself to scold him." He confessed, "Why?!" Ace demanded. Trey then leaned in a nearby shelf as he continued, "Everything Riddle is, was 'made' by following strict rules." Trey said in a dejected tone. The boys were stunned at what they heard, but none were more shocked than Andie as she stared wide-eyed. Riddle was raised by strict parents?
"Huh...?" Deuce blinked, "What do you mean?" Andie asked, "In his homeland, there isn't a single person who hasn't heard of his parents, as healers, they're that famous. His mother is especially exceptional and she wanted riddle to be exceptional as well. So from dawn till dusk, his every move was decided for him, down to the smallest thing, as part of his study program." Trey explained, "Down... to the smallest thing?" Grim asked in disbelief, he couldn't imagining living in that kind of life where everything is scheduled and decided for you.
"From what he ate, what he wore, what he consumed, to his friends, everything was decided for him. Neverless, Riddle never said a word and strive to meet those exceptions and completed his unique magic at age 10. On top of that, he has maintained his spot at the top since elementary school. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult that must have been." Trey tells them. A pained expression rested on his face as he recalls the very few happy memories he had with Riddle. He remembers that smile he used to have when they were still together, but now... because of his parents... because of his mother, that smile and that happy boy were gone.
Everyone was left silent as they took in Trey's words. Even Ace, who was infuriated with Riddle from the very beginning, was left speechless. They had no idea. They didn't know Riddle had that type of strict environment. Being told what to do through a serious of strict regulations and have everything, down to even minor things be decided for you. To live in that type of life, it was like Riddle was a bird in a bird cage. "So... the reason he's like this... is because of his parents...?" Andie said, looking at Trey with an unreadable expression. "Riddle thinks being bound by strict rules is for one's own benefit. He was bound by hard rules and still became a leader, so he believed it worked for anyone. Anyone can be like him. And that means breaking the rules is utterly unacceptable. I mean..." He said, trailing off a bit.
"If he gives rule violation any sort of positive reaction, it means going against the way he was made... you mean?" Ace said, finishing for him. Trey nodded. He felt his heart wracked with guilt and sorrow. His best friend... how he wished he could've... "... I understand why you think he's a tyrant. And that his way of doing things is incorrect. But for me... I just can bring myself to scold him." Trey said. "Ffnaa..." Grim's ears drooping down a bit as he began to feel sympathy for Riddle. They all were. None of them had expected to hear that something as controlling and severe as an environment as that would be something that Riddle had to live through. Deuce's head hung down as he softly said, "Riddle-senpai has a past like that..." Ace and Andie were silent. Ace did not make a sound as his mind began to process everything he has learned today. Yes, he was still pissed at Riddle... but... he knew that not even he deserved that. He glanced up at Trey and said, "After hearing all of this, I finally understand. The way Riddle is now, is your fault."
"Eh?!" Deuce, Grim and Trey exclaimed as they looked at the dark-orange haired boy in confusion. Expect Andie, who was understanding on where Ace was going with this. Ace didn't flinch from their stares and said exactly what was on his mind, "Riddle had no say in who his parents were. But, you've at least thought that they were wrong for a while, right?" "That's..." Trey began to protest, "If you think Riddle is making the same mistakes his parents did, say so. Put him on the right track. What have you accomplished by feeling sorry for poor Riddle and indulging him? You're just going to watch while he becomes hated and isolated from everyone? Or what? Are you keeping quiet cause you're afraid of losing your head? So lame!! You're not childhood friends. You can't even call yourself his friend!" Ace shouted at Trey's face. The once gentle natured Trey now looked at Ace with a deep frown and silently glared at him. "H-Hey... Ace!" Deuce cried out trying to stop his red-haired friend. "Oi Andie... aren't you going to say something?! Ace is running off his mouth again!" Grim cried out, looking at the platinum blonde who just stood quietly observing the whole scene.
".... Actually, I'm agreeing with Ace on this one...." "EH!?" Deuce and Grim looked at her like she grew a second head. Andie knew that even though he can be too straightforward and harsh at times, he does have a point. Trey was Riddle's childhood friend. And as a true friend, he could've helped Riddle instead of staying quiet. You can't choose your parents, and it's important to learn from your mistakes as you're growing up. Andie stepped closer to Trey and said, "I can understand that you want to protect him since he went through so much after what his parents did to him. And now that you told us, it makes us understand him better." She glares at him as she crossed her arms, "But not saying anything or doing anything will only bring him more pain and make your relationship with Riddle even worse. If you really are Riddle's best friend, Trey... then you're supposed to help him by stopping him. But instead, you stood by on the sidelines and watch him becoming a monster. SO, STOP BEING A COWARD AND MAN UP!"
Trey was stunned as he stood there silently, progressing what Andie said, when a voice yelled, "HEY! YOU ALL! BE QUIET IN THE LIBRARY!!!" They nearly jumped three feet as Crowley had appeared out of nowhere and suddenly began yelling at them. Grim's ears drooped again and stated, "You're being the loudest here." "Oops, apologies." Crowley said, embarrassed. He cleared his throat before continuing his scolding and whispered, "My goodness, the library is for quiet study or reading!" "Wait, what are you doing here, Headmaster?" Andie pointed out. "I was researching ways on how to get you back to your own world. I didn't forget it at all, see? Oh, how kind of me~ Research starts at the library, after all."
"Mmm..." Andie looked skeptical as she crossed her arms again, "However, I'm not actually here because I wanted to read the latest addition to a certain novel earlier than anyone else, no sir, not at all." "Which is it?" Andie frowned in annoyance, knowing what he said about finding a way for her to go home is absolute bullshit. Crowley cleared his throat and changed the subject. "By the way, what are you all doing here with such grim faces?" He asks them. The group looked at each other for a moment before coming to a conclusion. "About that..." They told him everything that's been going on. Hopefully, though it might be unlikely, he could provide some useful advice on what to do.
