XII*

After several hours of traveling, Eldwin's vision swam. He felt his mother place a cold hand against his warm forehead, firmly pressing it against him before jerking it away. He felt her body twist around and then dig through what he assumed was her medical bag. Chills began racing up his spine, causing him to shiver.

Eldwin's teeth chattered as a cold substance was pressed against his forehead, and a blanket was thrown over his body. "Rax," he heard his mother speak worriedly, "he is running a fever. I put a breakable ice pack on his forward to help with the fever, but we need to get him an antibiotic as soon as we land."

"I told you I have him bring you some directly to the airport." His teacher spoke somewhere in front of him. "Why didn't you get him some in North Carolina?"

"I'm not licensed there, or I would have."

The world around Eldwin turned black. After what felt like several seconds, a hard pain shot through his temple, causing him to cry out. He heard the hum of the engines come to a stop. "Eldwin," Sari cried somewhere in the distance. Voices grew louder as he felt his body picked up and carried in extreme heat. His body stopped moving as the speakers babbled in what his mind could pick out as Arabic.

Moaning, he forced one eye open. Looking up, he noticed Mr. Del Mastro had picked him up and held him in his arms. "Brax!" A man called out in the chaos.

"Reggie," the teacher responded, "Did you bring the antibiotic I requested?"

"Brax," the man named Reggie laughed. I learned a long time ago never to trust your judgment."

"Shut up," Sari snapped, "give it to me; if we hit the four-hour mark, he has to be hospitalized, and I don't have my license here anymore."

"My apologies, Sari." Reggie lowered his voice.

"Rax," Sari's voice drew farther away, "lay him down in the lobby. I need to wash up."

"Yes, Dear." Mr. Del Mastro spoke with a playful tone followed by a chuckle. Eldwin closed his eyes again and felt his body move once more. He was not asleep by no means; he could still hear everything around him but couldn't open his eyes, no matter how much he willed it. He heard a door opening and then slamming shut somewhere nearby. "Hang in there," he heard the teacher's voice coo, "your mother will fix you. She's fixed me up enough times." The teacher chuckled again.

"Stop telling him stuff like that." His mother chimed.

"I'm being honest."

"Shut up, and help me clean off this drainage."

"His wound looks bad. My men usually died from such a thing." The teacher said, disheartened.

"Well, praise the creator. He made man smart enough to heal it in the twentieth century." Sari snarked, "Kirk, I need a knife and my medical kit from the plan."

"Here, ya go, and I'll be right back."

Eldwin felt a warm, sharp pressure dig into his skin. He winced as he thought his mother dragged it around the wound in a circular motion. "Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Reggie came from somewhere a bit further back.

"Do you want to do this," Sari and Mr. Del Mastro snapped in unison."

"I'm cutting off the dead skin that will cause him trouble if it stays." His mother sighed.

"I'm back," Kirk's voice drew closer.

"Get me the gauze and the sterile pad." She directed. "Rax, where did I."

"Here you are; you handed it to me."

"Thank you." Eldwin felt the relief of a cream grazing his wound before his mother began wrapping his shoulder tight. "I'm hoping that will hold. For now." Eldwin was rolled on his back; he moaned and tried forcing his eyes open. All he could see was his mother and the teacher staring at him before he succumbed to the infection.
