Recruits
Recruits were always the new buzz and talk, hot gossip on any sports team.
Katsuki Bakugou knew that, feeling a sense of pride and power that he'd already went through that shit two years ago exiting high school. He had bragging rights of being accepted on a full scholarship ride to only the best division one university; U.A. He was irreplaceable, making sure that he was always the best on the team, but also leading their team to be the best, taking first place last year in the playoffs.
It was every players dream to play here. U.A's had dozens of titles in the past few decades, and it was fucking honorable to be part of one so far.
A retired pro basketball player, Yagi Toshinori, one of the best to play in the history of ball, coached at this school currently. He was a former player here, leading U.A to win four straight titles in a row. He's won multiple titles and MVP awards both collegiately and in the big league. His nickname was "All Might."
Katsuki grew up admiring him, fuck, he was literally the best, and he only accepts to learn from the best. So when the day suddenly came on no notice to receive an offer from All Might himself-
Damn was it the best moment of his entire life.
He loved when the rare opportunity for a new shrimp comes in, whether it be for the mens' or womens' basketball team. The few he's seen course through always look pale and frail, scared shitless during a few scrimmages.
Now, what the words husked around the mens team was about a possibility of an upcoming junior being recruited on the women's side.
"Man, what do you think? I heard from Kendou that when the team scrimmaged a few weeks ago, this chick was around five feet and five inches tall. That seems... too short to be honest," his roommate commented from behind.
Katsuki paused for a second on scrolling through an article on his phone, barely remembering the orange haired girl that was currently dating one of their teammates, Tetsutetsu. "Sounds more like a little girl."
It was in the midst of September, the beginning of junior year coming faster with a cold chill than how the summers warm breeze passing by. At least the best part of becoming a junior was that he and Kirishima didn't have to stay in the dorms anymore, they'd explored out and gotten an apartment to satisfy both of their tastes. Already settled in, it was only a matter of time before the upcoming year.
"Dude, but what if she's cute or somethin'? Y never go out with me and the guys, y'know, the gang! Kaminari-"
Katsuki scoffed and threw an icy glare at the redhead, scarlet meeting ruby. "That's irrelevant to me, piss off about that shit. I'm just curious to know if she made it without tearing a muscle or breaking a bone." He knew Kirishima was referring to their core squad. "Plus, you've already hung yourself up on that pinky haired one."
He sometimes wondered how the fuck those idiots got on the team, Pikachu hair was half a decent mid-range shooter and mildly fast, but one bump and his ass would be sliding on the court with nasty floor burns to follow. Soy sauce hair was just tall, had the wingspan of a fucking pterodactyl which picked off passes and easy steals.
There was too many idiots on the team in his opinion, thank god some of them were just practice members. The worst one was fucking Deku, always irritating him with just existing his entire life that had his attitude skyrocketing.
Kirishima raised his hands in defense. "I'm just saying, man. Since when does U.A recruit juniors? At least she'll be our age."
"You don't even know she'll come here, which I highly doubt considering her size," Katsuki contended, his eyes rolling again.
The men's team had tons more titles than the women's, in fact, they were just a better, more competitive team. The women's more recent title was... maybe thirty years ago?
All in all, it's been short and dry seasons for them. Luckily, he couldn't relate to taking that many L's.
There were some decent players, but nobody stood out as a team leader, as far as he could tell from watching their games. Nobody spectacular stuck out like he did, and a five-foot-five-inch girl was nowhere near that level of greatness.
Katsuki almost laughed at the idea.
.
.
.
With no authority whatsoever, Kirishima forcefully dragged Katsuki into another team dinner, which he perceived to be bullshit from their protests of, "oh, it's just team bonding!"
Team bonding his ass.
The hot topic of the discussion wasn't anything new, but only the most entertaining, at least to all of the idiots surrounding him.
Kaminari tapped his fingers on the table, excited eyes widened with curiosity. "So, anyone get any details about the new girl?" Katsuki wanted to slam his forehead on the surface, knowing that the damn fool only cared about juicy secrets and girl shit.
Shouji raised a large hand and gently waved. "Kodai told me she's sort of quiet, but pretty nice."
"Okay, so she's short, but nice with a shy side... I bet she's pretty cute." Kaminari drooled over the thought, tempting him all the more to punch the sucker square in his shit-faced loopy grin.
"Dude, chill," Kirishima said in a dull tone. "Don't stoop under Mineta's level."
Hearing that name sent cold shivers down each and every one of the young mans' spines. Mineta may be the water boy on the team, but damn he was thirsty for more than just fucking drinks. That pervert dug up the most explicit shit, which Katsuki wondered how the female stalker was still allowed at U.A?
Midoriya cleared his throat from the other side of the table, half a smile on his face. "Yeah, we barely even know anything about this girl. For all we know it could just be an average basketball player."
"You don't care cause you like dick," Sero jokes from the side, earning a few loud howls and laughs as Midoriya's face bursted in crimson color, his green eyes glancing over to half n' half, who replicated the same shade as his red hair.
"Yeah yeah, we all know you just want to suck your boyfriends' face off, but we ain't interested in that," Katsuki sneered with a cocky grin, letting Kirishima off the hook once the man slapped his broad shoulder without consent.
The young man's boyfriend, Todoroki, fought to keep the blush rising onto his cheeks as his jaw hardened and multi-colored irises stared back. "You don't have to keep intoxicating the air with every low insult, it wasn't necessary to the original topic."
"Aw, don't take him seriously, he's just being a bitch, no worries."
Kirishima laughed as he nudged the man on the other side of him, known as his headband buddy, his black hair sticking upwards with a white and blue headband in a similar shitty manner as his roommates.
Kaminari took a swig of his drink. "Awase, you're lucky Kirishima's between you and Bakugou."
Damn right he was. If they weren't in a public restaurant right now, god knows Katsuki's hand would be clamped around headbands' throat for good.
"Going back on the women's team," a different voice popped from another direction, the young man's black hair slicked down the center of his head into a short French braid that reached the back of his neck. "Did Yaoyorozu say anything about the recruit?"
Sometimes, Katsuki could barely remember that Hiryuu Rin existed, the damn guy wasn't the most talkative or loudmouthed on the team.
Awase flipped his fingers across the tops of his hair, a subtle hint of pink dusted across his face. "Momo didn't say anything bad, but she could tell that the girl was definitely timid during workouts. Said maybe she's just shy at first, but really kind overall."
"Bein' nice and stuff is cool, but is she really going to make a difference?" The silver-grey haired man queried, "Kendou did say she was short, but maybe she was just holding back. We all get it, we've gone through that manly stuff."
Katsuki sipped from his beer and slowly took in the exquisitely tiny amount of information about the unknown young woman coursing through his thoughts. Both teams haven't had any recruits ever since him and the rest of the team came in, but it was more than strange to look at someone their age to take in for only two years. It irritates him that because of the fact mystery girl's recruitment is in the smack midst of her collegiate basketball career is what nicked at the back of his brain.
Not to be blunt, but he didn't feel very Katsuki Bakugou like, he didn't have any hopes or prayers in the new potential baller, but curiosity was driving him up a wall.
So what the hell was so special in her that All Might decided to give her a go?
