Character Origins: Sabine Wolfhart

Hey guys, so this is a chapter type I plan on incorporating for each of the elementals to give them some more contextual backstory. I have so many ideas for this but I just need to find ways to incorporate them.

The group of friends made their way back into the city after a new member joined the team. Lucian, the ghost elemental's descendant, has decided ,with a tad of reluctance, to join them on their quest. They barely know anything about one another, though this will soon change for a certain individual who is perhaps the most mysterious of the group.

In the Pokémon Center of Lumiose City, everyone was seated in a pair of booths. Ash and Serena were in one pair of seats while Lucian and Sabine were in the opposite pair of seats across the table. Bonnie and Clemont were behind Ash and Serena in the opposite booth looking over. Bonnie seemed to be keeping her distance for some reason...

"So Lucian, where do you come from? Are you a trainer?" Ash asked with a raised eyebrow. He was thinking of the pokemon who had been taken in for treatment after the incident in the graveyard. Even Pikachu was parted from his shoulder to be properly checked over.

Lucian had a similar attitude to Sabine in the sense that he acted fairly emotionless until he trusted people. He seemed to trust Sabine after she helped expel Obliternus' poison from his mind. "I am not a trainer but to be honest Ash, I would like to know more about the rest of you, in particular Sabine." He replied gesturing to his right. Sabine looked at him curiously and then at the others.

Serena spoke next. "Actually, I would like to know more about you to Sabine, whats your story?" The others murmured in various levels of agreement. Bonnie remained silent, her eyes fixed on the groups new addition.

Sabine took a breath. "Very well, I will tell you my origins."

Sabine went on to tell them her story, where she came from and the connection she had to all which was transpiring.

Sabine was always a fun loving young girl when she was a kid. She would play with many pokemon of all types but she seemed particularly drawn to the psychic type pokemon her father had caught in his travels. Her father was a pokemon archaeologist. His official title was Doctor Wolfhart. He had travelled around many regions such as Hoenn, Unova and Alola. However, perhaps his greatest discovery was in the Celestic ruins of the Sinnoh region.

His presence in the ruins was not unheard of. He was just there doing some research on the ruling pokemon of space and time. He was curious how these two entities had a part in the creation of the universe. There was a belief that a third pokemon known as Giratina existed in a parallel dimension called the Distortion World. However, Wolfhart had a different question in mind.

For just how powerful these three deity like pokemon were, what of those who created them? He was also aware of the belief in the Alpha pokemon Arceus. During one of his investigations further into the Celestic ruins than few care to venture, he was delighted to find something about the Alpha Pokémon. A mural of some kind. It wasn't clear what it depicted.

He put his hand on the mural as he walked to the side with a flashlight in his other hand. He tried to make sense of what the strange language on the bottom was saying. There were some languages he did recognise such as the language of the Unown. Each one kept referencing the same thing. '18 elements, 18 elements.' Wolfhart and no clue what this meant.

He continued to make his way across the mural until it just...stopped. He looked at the edge of the mural. It just cuts off like a letter which was ripped in two. He took a few steps back and looked at the depiction of Arceus. It made up exactly half of the mural. If an entire half of the mural is missing opposite of Arceus, what or who is on the mssing half?

A few seconds passed by as Wolfhart continued studying the mural. Suddenly, a strange cracking sound echoed from below him. Startled he shined his light to the floor. His face immediately contorted into one of terror as the floor around him gave way to a large menacing crack. Without a moment to react, he felt himself topple through the floor, as a single yell escaped his throat.

With a stroke of luck, the drop was only around 10 feet. he was relatively unscathed, the worst injury being a twisted ankle. He looked around frantically when he recovered, his eyes setting on his flashlight a few feet away from him. He shuffled over to it as quick as he could and took it in his right hand.

His gaze was quickly absorbed by a second mural. As the dust cleared from the amount of age old debris, his eyes widened in surprise at his discovery. This mural was different, had things he had never seen before. Once again it showed Arceus, smaller but unmistakable, with another pokemon floating to his side. They shared some similarities but even as a timeless image, it looked wrong, evil. He kept his gaze off the strange creature.

Further down from Arceus, his surprise increased further. There were a group of figures who seemed to be bowing to Arceus, his plates glowing with an energy that radiated from each one. Humans, a mix of girls and boys.

Wolfhart looked at the humans for a few seconds until a thought occurred to him. Arceus has 18 elemental plates. There are 18 humans covered with energy from those plates. 9 boys and girls. Did Arceus create humans with some of his own power? Upon closer inspection to the humans, he was on his feet limping towards the mural now, he saw that each of the elementals had a symbol of some kind on both of their wrists.

Where did he see that symbol before? A bolt symbol, a shield symbol, a flame symbol. 18 elements, 18 symbols, 18 types... What did it all mean? Then he realised where he had seen those symbols, on his trip through Alola...

Wolfhart had the same black hair as his daughter and the same dark blue eyes as well. It was always a telltale sign he was thinking about his daughter or wife when he held a lock of his own hair. It would ground him to earth, remind him no matter what, they were always waiting for him. I was always waiting for him.

Sabine, for the first time, had a show of emotion. When a tear escaped her eye, everyone else, bar Clemont, grew silent in understanding. "What happened to him Sabine, we are here for you." He spoke gently.

Her and Clemont's eyes met and for a brief moment, she thought he was going to cry himself. Instead he gave her a reassuring smile, his eyes brimming with understanding and compassion. She somehow managed to find a small smile for him as well. "Thank you Clemont, all of you, anyway..." she straightened up.

"Around 6 months after my father found this mysterious mural in Celestic Ruins, he left once again but stayed local to Kalos. We are Kalos native after all. He only ever told us about the discovery, no one else. But, he went missing. There was never a trace of him." She took a solemn breath, she struggled to talk about her father.

Lucian nodded in sympathy, though he did not wish to interrupt. He to knew what it was like to lose family. Ash and Serena also shared a knowing look of concern, both of them knowing what it was like to grow up without a father."We never found out what happened to him, the authorities were forced to give in because they had no leads." After a long pause, a reluctant Serena questioned "What about your mother?"

"She... passed some time after my fathers disappearance. I was raised by my Aunt Idris after that. She encouraged me to take a journey, though I didn't want to be a trainer or bond with pokemon. It felt like anything I grew to care about would be destroyed." She choked back a sob. Internally she was punishing herself for almost breaking down in front of her new friends.

"Sabine, you do not have to continue if you don't want to." Ash interjected. Before Sabine could respond, a small sniffling sound could be heard behind Ash and Serena. Everyone tilted their heads in the direction and Clemont was gesturing to Bonnie. She had sat down out of sight and was quietly crying. "Bonnie?" Clemont questioned gently.

She looked up at her older brother with tears leaking from her eyes very precariously. She felt the burning of more tears behind her eyes as she thought about Sabine's heartwrenching story. "Big brother... what would happen if our dad wasn't there?" she stuttered between sniffles. Clemont's surprise could not have been more obvious.

"Hey shh, don't think like that." He whispered as he hugged his little sister. "Our father loves us, just as much as Sabine's father loved her. I know it." He passed a glance to Sabine who nodded and mouthed a thank you to him. Everyone else all wore a frown at the brotherly display. It was rare Bonnie would be so bothered by something like that.

"Hey, why don't we go see how Dedenne is doing with the other pokemon huh?" Clemont offered. He got up from the booth and held his hand out for his younger sister. With one last sniffle she nodded her head. "Ok..." Clemont and Bonnie exited the room and headed into the further facilities of the pokemon center to see their faithful companions.

"If you three don't mind, I would like to finish my story." Lucian was still watching where Bonnie and Clemont had left the room. Something else seemed off when the young girl looked at him. Ash and Serena were just as attentive. Sabine, seeming satisfied with everyone else's focus, went on to the next part of her story.

"2 months ago, on my journey, I had the strangest dream. It was like this..."

Sabine fell into a deep sleep on a night that seemed darker then usual. That seemed to be the case. Darkness seemed much more visceral ,more dominant, as if something terrible was gonna happen soon. As she lulled into a slumber worthy of the night outside her hotel, a certain entity began to manifest within her thoughts.

Sabine looked around her own dreamscape. "Where am I?" Confused, she stared into the distance. What she assumed would be the sky was just a light blue expanse, no clouds. If there were any, they would be below her since the entire ground was a misty white. "You are in a dream connected to my own." A voice boomed. The voice was regal, powerful. It did not scare Sabine though she still felt a sense of humility towards it. And something else deep inside her, a spark of familiarity igniting the unknown.

"Who are you?" Sabine pulled back on her tone, she calmed herself, thinking it better to give respect to something so powerful. "Why am I dreaming this and what do you mean connected to yours?" she said in a more reserved way.

The voice erupted a low bellow which sounded like a laugh. "Fear not young one. You know me." Something inside Sabine gave way. Somehow this voice had a patriarchal vibe to it. She grew hopeful at this fact. "F-Father?" Once again the voice bellowed like a godly laugh. "In a sense, I suppose. You are my child. My child of clairvoyance..." Clairvoyance? Sabine had no idea what this meant. "You are my creation, you are a descendant of the first." the voice continued. Sabine was still hooked on the idea of her father but before she ask another word a brilliant light blinded her.

When she opened her eyes, the last remnants of energy, streams of celestial, transcendent energy shooting out of a circular vortex. Then the vortex exploded and in its place was a large white creature. One look at it and a single word came to mind for Sabine. "Arceus..." the creature lowered itself in front of Sabine as if it was sizing her up. Sabine was confused, she has never met or seen this creature before and yet she immediately knew its name.

"Of course you know me, your father once mentioned my name." Of course! The discovery, the mural. Sabine paused for a moment. "How did you know what I was...Did you read my thoughts?" If the creature known as Arceus could smile, she assumed it was at that moment.

"Indeed, and so can you my child. You have so many other incredible powers. You have such an important task ahead of you. My opposite is returning, he is the embodiment of darkness. Thanks to all of the hatred and darkness in the hearts of humans, he is becoming strong enough to break free. When he does, all will be consumed in eternal night. You must become strong and seek out your brothers and sisters."

"What do you mean, I-I don't know what any of this means or has to do with me."

"Let me explain to you, all will be clear soon enough."

"So you saw Arceus in your dream?!" Ash said in awe. Sabine nodded in response. Serena shared Ash's awe. "After that he told me the story I told you before, about his conflict with Obliternus and the 18 and what he did when he won." Lucian grunted making the others look at him. "I know that story, when I was under that wretched pokemon's...influence, he told me of the great battle he had with Arceus, of course he made it seem like he lost unjustly and was wronged."

"Something this powerful." Serena began. "What chance do we have against it, it seems like we have only seen a fraction of Obliternus' power." She shivered at the thought of how hopeless it looked. "Hey." Ash brought his voice low in volume. "Listen Serena, don't think like that, we will get through this." He put a hand on her shoulder. "Together." Serena stared at him, his determination was infectious. "Yeah, together!" she smiled back at Ash. Lucian and Sabine shared a grin.

"To answer your question Serena, we train. You and Ash are elementals to. We just have to unlock your abilities." Serena and Ash agreed, they would do anything they could to make sure the world stays intact. "Anyway, lets go get the pokemon. We start tomorrow." Sabine said. So they all got up and followed the path Clemont and Bonnie took.

Hi guys, been consumed by writers block for this story, advantage: loads of ideas now. Hope you guys enjoyed this special chapter. Soon, training begins for the elementals of fire and water. ;)
