ELEVEN; SATAN IS NICER THAN THIS PRICK

Sabrina felt flushed when she woke up. Everything was shifting between being too hot and horribly cold, leaving her in an uncomfortable state of agony. There were a hundred drummers banging on her forehead as well as a numbing pain from her waist down. Every inch of her body ached, and to make matters worse, she couldn't seem to get her eyes to open.

"Good afternoon, Sabrina," a soft, unfamiliar voice greeted her as the woman stirred. Sabrina hardly heard it, she was weighed down and weak...and tired. God, she was so tired. "I'm glad you're awake."

Sabrina's head lulled to the side and she forced her eyelids to spread. The light blinded her — not because it was bright, but because it just happened to exist. It felt as if she'd been asleep for years. If she had, she'd be pissed. "Wh-"

"Best not to talk, dear," the voice came again. Sabrina felt a hand on her arm, and she looked up to see a fuzzy figure morph into focus. It was a woman. She was tall, blonde and had the face of an angel. She wore the clothes of a nineteen fifties housewife and had the smile of a mother from a fairytale. "My name is Grace. Diego brought you here last night and I fixed you all up."

Sabrina's lips tried to form a response.

"You were shot twice. We don't usually help those outside the family, but Diego insisted," Grace continued in her gentle voice. It somehow put Sabrina at ease; the fact that she was in a random room with a stranger didn't seem to matter. "I've bandaged everything up and given you a healing agent. You're very lucky, my dear. We were quite impressed with your bravery."

"Uh, thanks," Sabrina mumbled, her voice raspy and unused. It hardly ever sounded like that. "Where's Diego?"

"He's outside," Grace replied with ease. "He refused to sleep last night but he nearly fainted upon your operation. I'll bring him in for you."

Sabrina smiled lightly. The thought of Diego fainting was quite amusing to her.

Moving her head and glancing down, Sabrina groaned a little at the sight of her legs hoisted in slings. She came to the conclusion that she had royally screwed up. Well, that was obvious enough. She strained her neck and little and wiggled her toes. Huh, she could still move down there. She must've been pretty damn lucky.

"Look what we have here," Diego's voice snapped Sabrina out of her thoughts, and she looked over to see the leather-clad man walking her way. He seemed to be holding back a smile, but it was clear he was happy to see her. "How're you feeling?"

"Peachy," Sabrina tried to grin, but it was more of a grimace. "Thanks for saving me."

"Thanks for not dying," Diego retorted, reaching for her hand and squeezing it softly. Grace watched the pair with a light smile. "You understand why I don't like this hero shit? You could've died last night, Brie."

"Yeah, I know," Sabrina muttered, resting her head back on the pillow. "I'm sorry, Diego. I shouldn't have been so stupid."

Diego started rubbing circles on the back of her hand. "Sometimes we have to learn these things the hard way."

"You're just saying that cause you don't wanna hurt my feelings so soon," she quirked an eyebrow, and he dipped his head, chuckling softly.

"Absolutely," he responded, looking back up to meet her eyes. His face then fell a little, and he glanced back at Grace. "Listen, Brie. I tried to get you back here as quiet as I could, but it's only a matter of time before my father finds out. He's already suspicious enough, but if he leaves his study, it could mean that he'll try and use you."

"Speaking ill of me when you assume I am not around is insulting, number two," a sharp, irritated voice cut through the conversation like a knife through cake. Diego visibly tensed and spun around to face the elderly man who had entered the medical room. Sabrina tried to look up, but her friend had stepped in front of her so that her view was blocked. "Step aside and show me the girl. Nothing happens in this house without me knowing about it."

"I don't want you anywhere near her," Diego's voice dropped to a low, dangerous tone. Sabrina had never heard or seen him like this before. To be honest, it freaked her out a little. It also made her feel...other things, if you're picking up what I'm putting down.

"You have no authority to speak to me like that," what Sabrina had come to the conclusion was Reginald Hargreeves snapped. Footsteps approached, and a cane hit Diego's shoulder. Diego didn't flinch. "Step. Aside."

Diego hadn't let go of Sabrina's hand the entire time, and Sabrina winced a little as his grip continued to tighten. "No."

"Number Two," Reginald warned angrily. It took a moment, before Diego finally took a step back, though he still held onto Sabrina. The wrinkled face came into her view within seconds, and the woman held her chin up as high as she could. If this was the one person to make Diego cower, clearly he wasn't the cream of the crop. "Who do you think you are, using my medicine and technology?"

"Tell that to the assholes who shot me," Sabrina retorted, once again not seeing any boundaries. Reginald's jaw stiffened a little, and he glared down at her through the monocle over his left eye.

"Get her out of here," Reginald grumbled, and Grace stepped forward, though her face showed hesitance in obeying.

"She's not ready to go yet," Diego insisted, but the old man held a hand up to silence him. Diego clenched his free fist, his eyes flickering down to Sabrina, who softly nodded once she knew what he was considering. "Dad, she's like us."

"Impossible," Reginald shook his head in denial. "The other children died or were adopted after their mothers lost control. I would have known if I missed any others."

"She was born on the first of October at midday, like me," Diego continued. "She can materialise dreams and sense danger. She's worth saving."

Reginald sneered, leaning forward so that he could inspect Sabrina closer. His breath smelled like after dinner mints, she hated it. "I don't believe you."

Sabrina scowled, before she stared him dead in the eye. "What's your worst nightmare?"

All of a sudden, Reginald tensed and looked to his left.

"Reggie, what are you doing? This isn't what I wanted."

"Stop that," the man took a step backwards. Sabrina watched him with a calm expression.

"Reggie, these poor children. You destroyed them. You destroyed this world with your creations. Everything you've done has been for nothing. I'm glad I died before you did any more damage."

"I'm warning you," Reginald hissed, and Sabrina met the eyes of Diego, who wasn't completely sure what was happening, for he couldn't see what his father was seeing. "Make it stop or you will face dire consequences."

"You need to stop being such a prick, Reggie," Sabrina responded without hesitation. She then pursed her lips and closed her eyes. She opened them after a moment, and the apparition of his nightmare was gone. The old man was left stunned, which didn't look any different to the lack of emotion he usually exuded. Still, it made Sabrina feel quite good. "Sorry for being argy bargy, for lack of better word. I'll get out of your hair as soon as I can, sound good?"

"Where were you born? Why couldn't I find you?" Reginald avoided her question and began to interrogate fiercely.

"Sweden. Shitty village called Dammig," she said bluntly to match his own tone. "My family tried to keep me a secret for as long as they could. My grandmother thought I was the spawn of Satan. She tried to cast spells, perform exorcisms, all that jazz to keep the demons away. You probably couldn't find me cause everyone pretended I didn't exist. Screw your technology, the spoken word is far more powerful."

Reginald straightened up and rested his hands on the top of his cane. "Once you can walk, I want to speak with you alone. That is the only condition I will allow you to stay."

Diego squeezed her hand even tighter.

Sabrina swallowed the lump in her throat, before she nodded once. "Sounds good to me. Thank you so much for your service."

Reginald's upper lip curled up in annoyance, before he spun on his heel and stalked out of the room without another words. Diego took a moment to adjust, but when he did, he stepped towards Sabrina and placed his hand on her cheek. "You didn't have to do that."

"Yeah, I did," Sabrina shrugged carelessly. "Your dad's a real fucking prick by the way. I've never met Satan, but I'm sure he'd be a lot nicer."

Diego chuckled. "Anyone's nicer than Reginald Hargreeves."
