Chapter 19: Little Sun Flower is Upset

I  cried myself to sleep, feeling absolute useless and angry and broken. I didn't know what to do. Or where to go, I was angry but so lost and confused. Nana Calantha held me while I cried, she rubbed my back until I passed out. The Vision dreams hit me hard once I was asleep.

I saw a bright shinning war ship sitting in the middle of the volleyball courts. A two hundred foot long war ship, with a bronze-plated hull, mounted repeating crossbows fore and aft, a flaming metal dragon for a figurehead, and two rotating ballistae amidships that could fire explosive bolts powerful enough to blast through concrete. The dragon head at the mast opened its mouth and let a giant roar. A short kid with wild curly hair came running from somewhere under the deck. His hands were stained with great and soot. He wore a tool belt around his jeans and he had a screw driver tucked behind his ear.

"I told you Festus, I'm still trying to unstick this one gear and then were golden!"

"LEO!" A voice yelled. A girl with blond curls poked her head out from a hatch, She had matching soot and grease. "I think I figured out the problem!"

"Annabeth I could kiss you!" The elf looking kid cried, he scrambled back down the hatch after the blond girl.

It was silent on the deck for a minute and then I heard a grinding sound and then the dragon head tipped back and let out a loud roar and shot fire into the air. From the ground a loud cheer went up. I looked over the side of the war ships railing, a crowd of grim looking teens in orange t shirts. I saw a centaur standing beside two kids, they looked vaguely familiar.

"Jason, Piper, it's time." The centaur said, and the two kids who looked familiar climbed up the ladder that appeared over the side, the kid named Leo  had tossed it over.

The dream shifted again, but now the ship was in the air, it was flying through the clouds. The blond girl was walking back and forth on the deck, she had a clip board in one hand checking things off. There was a huge white flag, as big as a bed sheet flying, clearly a 'we come in peace' sign. She looked anxious and stressed. She walked over to the edge and gripped one of the bronze shields that lined the starboard rail.

Her three crewmates took their places.

On the stern quarterdeck,  the kid named Leo rushed around like a madman, checking his gauges and wrestling levers. Most helmsmen would've been satisfied with a pilot's wheel or a tiller. Leo had also installed a keyboard, monitor, aviation controls from a Learjet, a dubstep soundboard, and motion-control sensors from a Nintendo Wii. He could turn the ship by pulling on the throttle, fire weapons by sampling an album, or raise sails by shaking his Wii controllers really fast. Even by demigod standards, Leo was seriously ADHD.

As  I watched the four of them on the deck, memories of who they were came back. Leo- the son of Hephaestus. I helped him catch and tame the metal dragon that was now the mast of the ship. I recognized Jason, the blond Roman superman- we had a long chat when I helped rescue them from storm spirits and then a nice chat with the centaur (I couldn't remember his name) And then there was the girl, the daughter of Aphrodite. I didn't have any interactions with her, but she was on the deck, pacing back and forth mumbling to herself. I watched her for  moment.

For a child of Aphrodite, Piper  was trying hard to play down her beauty. She was dressed in tattered jeans, worn-out sneakers, and a white tank top with pink Hello Kitty designs. Even in that she was seriously pretty. Her choppy brown hair was braided down the right side with an eagle's feather.

I turned and saw Jason. He stood at the bow on the raised crossbow platform, where the Romans could easily spot him. His knuckles were white on the hilt of his golden sword. Otherwise he looked calm for a guy who was making himself a target. Over his jeans and orange Camp Half-Blood T-shirt, he'd donned a toga and a purple cloak. From my time with Mithras, these were symbols of  praetor rank, which means he was claiming to be leader of the 12th roman legion. With his wind-ruffled blond hair and his icy blue eyes, he looked ruggedly handsome and in control- just like a son of Jupiter should.

Directly below the ship, nestled at the edge of the lake, the city of New Rome gleamed in the sunlight. She recognized landmarks Jason had told her about—the hippodrome, the coliseum, the temples and parks, the neighborhood of Seven Hills with its winding streets, colorful villas, and flowering gardens.

I saw evidence of a recent battle with what was clearly an army of monsters. The dome was cracked open on a building she guessed was the Senate House. The forum's broad plaza was pitted with craters. Some fountains and statues were in ruins.

Dozens of kids in togas were streaming out of the Senate House to get a better view of the ship that was descending. More Romans emerged from the shops and cafés, gawking and pointing as the ship descended.

About half a mile to the west, where the horns were blowing, a Roman fort stood on a hill. It looked just like the illustrations I had seen in military history books that lined General Mithras's office—with a defensive trench lined with spikes, high walls, and watchtowers armed with scorpion ballistae. Inside, perfect rows of white barracks lined the main road—the Via Principalis.

A column of demigods emerged from the gates, their armor and spears glinting as they hurried toward the city. In the midst of their ranks was an actual war elephant.

I scanned the crowd, hoping to see a familiar face, maybe Raph had escaped and was now with the Romans. But I doubted it, the Romans had taken him. I shook my head as something exploded, knocking the ship. I whirled and found herself eye to eye with an angry statue. My heart jumped, but then I remembered I was in a dream vision, they couldn't see me or hear me. I was just observing. It was the blond, which only now her name came back to me, Annabeth- Percy's girlfriend.

"Unacceptable!" the statue shrieked.

Apparently he had exploded into existence, right there on the deck. Sulfurous yellow smoke rolled off his shoulders. Cinders popped around his curly hair. From the waist down, he was nothing but a square marble pedestal. From the waist up, he was a muscular human figure in a carved toga.

"I will not have weapons inside the Pomerian Line!" he announced in a fussy teacher voice. "I certainly will not have Greeks!"

Jason shot Annabeth a look that said, I've got this.

"Terminus," he said. "It's me. Jason Grace."

"Oh, I remember you, Jason!" Terminus grumbled. "I thought you had better sense than to consort with the enemies of Rome!"

"But they're not enemies-"

"That's right," Piper jumped in. "We just want to talk. If we could—"

"Ha!" snapped the statue. "Don't try that charmspeak on me, young lady. And put down that dagger before I slap it out of your hands!"

Piper glanced at her bronze dagger, which she'd apparently forgotten she was holding. "Um...okay. But how would you slap it? You don't have any arms."

"Impertinence!" There was a sharp POP and a flash of yellow. Piper yelped and dropped the dagger, which was now smoking and sparking.

"Lucky for you I've just been through a battle," Terminus announced. "If I were at full strength, I would've blasted this flying monstrosity out of the sky already!"

"Hold up." Leo stepped forward, wagging his Wii controller. "Did you just call my ship a monstrosity? I know you didn't do that.

"Let's all calm down." She raised her hands to show she had no weapons. "I take it you're Terminus, the god of boundaries. Jason told me you protect the city of New Rome, right? I'm Annabeth Chase, daughter of—"

"Oh, I know who you are!" The statue glared at her with its blank white eyes. "A child of Athena, Minerva's Greek form. Scandalous! You Greeks have no sense of decency. We Romans know the proper place for that goddess."

Annabeth clenched her jaw. "What exactly do you mean, that goddess? And what's so scandalous about-"

"Right!" Jason interrupted. "Anyway, Terminus, we're here on a mission of peace. We'd love permission to land so we can—"

"Impossible!" the god squeaked. "Lay down your weapons and surrender! Leave my city immediately!"

"Which is it?" Leo asked. "Surrender, or leave?"

"Both!" Terminus said. "Surrender, then leave. I am slapping your face for asking such a stupid question, you ridiculous boy! Do you feel that?"

"Wow." Leo studied Terminus with professional interest. "You're wound up pretty tight. You got any gears in there that need loosening? I could take a look."

He exchanged the Wii controller for a screwdriver from his magic tool belt and tapped the statue's pedestal. I stopped listening to the arguments between the statue and the demogods. I leaned over the edge and scanned the crowd again, really hoping to see Raph.

Down in the valley, the legion reinforcements were halfway to the city. The crowd in the forum was over a hundred strong now. I scanned the faces and I had to do a quick double take, I saw Percy. What was he doing here in the Roman demi god camp?  He was walking toward the ship with his arms around two other kids like they were best buddies- a stout boy with a black buzz cut, and a girl wearing a Roman cavalry helmet, she looked vaguely familiar- I had seen her once before, but I couldn't place it. Percy looked so at ease, so happy. He wore a purple cape just like Jason's—the mark of a praetor.

My dream suddenly shifted.

I was in some dark stone room. It was dark and cold, and smelt horrible. There were water marks on the wall, I turned in a circle, trying to see anything. There were no windows in the stone cellar. A door was closed and locked, clearly. There was a little light that crept through the cracks in the door, that was the only source of light. I hear some rustling and turned towards the noise. Sitting in the corner, was Raph. I yelped in surprise. He looked more or less alright. He had a bruise on his check, and some dried blood from his nose and lip. His ankles were chained together and he had a thick iron clamp around his neck which was attached to the wall with a thick chain. I let a sob out. He had his head bowed as best he could and was murmuring something.

I crept closer, and I realized he was prying to his father, Ares. Tears burnt my eyes. I knelt right in front of him. I wished I could touch him. My hand passed right though his face, like I was some kind of spirit. He raised his head when there was the sounds of footsteps. His eyes narrowed and I saw his jaw clench in pure anger. There was a lock in the door and it swung open, thudding against the wall.

Raph threw his hands up to block the light. Standing in the door frame was the tall skinny kid named Octavian. If I was there in real life I would have blasted him with my fire and insinerated him right on the spot. He had a wild twisted smile, and his eyes were manic. He looked deranged right now.

"Can you close the door, I was enjoying the silence." Raph said dryly.

"I come bringing you good news, Greek scum." He sounded like a kid in a candy shop. "Your war ship arrived this afternoon. They took that stupid Greek, Percy, who claimed to be a praetor who claimed he had no memory and was just dropped at the house with Lupa. A likely story. But no matter, they started the war! I couldn't have planned it better then this! So now...we are off to your camp to whip them off the face of the earth! Gaea will be content the gods wont have their split personalities anymore and we can go back to peace."

"Your are more fucked up then I first thought." Raph spat. I saw the horror in his dark eyes though. I shivered as I saw Octavian step into the room, his eyes flashed-

I sat up wit ha wild scream. I didn't sleep the rest of the night. I tried bringing up the Sight again, but I couldn't figure out how, and I was just getting more and more angry.  I tossed the covers with a growl and got dressed, and walked through the quiet house and out into the training grounds. I plucked the bow off my bracelet and shot arrow after arrow into any and all the targets. I had discovered my never ending supply of arrows, and I just stood shooting anything and everything.

Once my fingers should have been bleeding, I went to the dummy at the end of the training ground and slammed my fists into the thing over and over and over. My knuckles should have been bruised and bleeding, but I didn't feel anything, they were red, but that was about it. I wanted to feel the pain, I wanted the sting and the hurt. Raph was being chained and beat and I was sitting here in safety. I needed to leave.

With a scream of frustration and sadness and anger I slammed the palm into the dummies chest and it exploded in fire and flew off the pole. I stood huffing, gold tears slid down my face.

"That seemed excessive."

I glanced over my shoulder. Marcus and Vlad stood behind me, leaning on one of the marble columns that lined the training ground. They had collected the many many arrows I had shot. There was a solid pile of bronze tipped arrows with white feathers piled at their feet.

"Little sun flower is upset." Vlad growled. "Who hurt you?"

"You want a list?" I snapped, using the back of my hand to wipe the tears.

"Yes, actually. That's why I asked."

I couldn't help but let out a sad laugh. I shook my head.

"Nora, you can tell us what's going on. We know there's some crazy shit going on. Gaea is on the move, there are rumors of giants rising from Tartarus. We know many of the Greco-Roman gods are struggling." Marcus said flatly, he pointed one of my arrows at me, and raised an eyebrow,  "And we know it has something to do with you in the center of it, and we know you can't stay here for ever. And from the look on your face, you're planning on leaving. But tell us what's going on and the brotherhood can help. That's why you joined. You're not alone."

I deflated. I ran my hand through my hair, shoving it out of my face. "Fine."

I spilt everything. I told them what I saw yesterday with the vision after the movies, and what the dream visions were, how I worked out Percy was taken the same time as we found Jason, the forced exchange program with Hera. I told the guys how I was part of it, but I was plucked and tossed here, alone, still struggling with my memories. But now I needed to get going I had been safe here for 3 months. I needed to go help my friends. I couldn't stay here anymore.

The two huge warriors listened and nodded along.

"We wont fight you leaving. We understand. Sunflower needs to find her path. But before you go...wait. Wait 48 hours. Let us talk to General Mithras, Like Marcus said, we are a brotherhood, you have your own path but we wont let you go alone. So just wait before you do something rash."

I growled in frustration, but Vlad had a point. "Fine. 2 days. Then I leave."

The two guys nodded. "Now...you said there were werewolves in your vision?" Vlad asked, I noticed Marcus shivered. I nodded slowly.

"What are you thinking?"

"Monsters are killed with Celestial Bronze or Imperial gold." Vlad said slowly, as he ran huge tattooed hand over his long braided beard.

Again I nodded slowly. "My arrows are bronze. And my knife is bronze."

"You have two knives." Marcus pointed out.

I pulled them out, my twin blades, one was bronze with the a sun engraving the other looked silver with a moon. I handed them over to the Viking. He looked at them closely. "What other weapons do you carry?"

I pressed the sun on the one bracelet and it spun into a Celestial bronze shield with a huge engraved sun. "My bow and arrows, knives, shield and fire power."

"If you are fighting werewolves you need a weapon. This knife is silver, but its too small. Short range. You need a sword..."

"Those rings from The Bull Beast!" Marcus snapped his fingers. "All your trophies from defeating such a beast."

"Perfect." Vlad smiled, it was slightly malicious and twisted. "Do you mind if I use the rings and craft you a weapon worthy of the warrior you are?"

"Not at all, I wasn't sure what to do with them." I shrugged.

"Excellent. Wait until I am done, my little Valkyrie." He nodded, and wondered off to the armory.

"I also have an idea, but we must go talk with the General." Marcus said shoving the arrows back into my quiver. "He's in the kitchen with Nana. Come on." He dragged me back through the training ground and back to the house.
