It happens so fast that Peter almost misses it. A fist comes out of nowhere and strikes Calvin in the face, making him stumble back against the wall. The rest of the guys join in and in seconds, Calvin collapses to the floor, already covered in blood.
"Hey!" Peter yells, getting their attention but not enough so that they stop beating Calvin up. He webs one of the guys closest to him to the wall, hoping it will help lighten the attack. Another guy tries to swing a punch at him but he dodges it and strikes him in the ribs instead. He feels something crunch and the guy screams in pain. Peter probably hit him harder than he should have but he doesn't care. Rage and worry flow through him and all he can think about is making sure Calvin is safe. Calvin has managed to get off the floor now that only three guys are surrounding him but he's still not putting up a good enough fight to win. Peter rushes to his side and blocks a few punches that were aimed at him. Calvin looks away from his attacker and over at him in awe, earning him another blow to the torso.
"Y-You're-"
"Spider-Man. Yup," Peter interrupts, not bothering to be polite or change the tone of his voice. Calvin won't notice anything strange about him, he's too shaken. Peter kicks the guy nearest to him in the stomach, sending him flying back into the car. He webs him to it and turns around to see Calvin punch a guy across the jaw, sending him to the floor.
"Nice punch," Peter says. Calvin shrugs.
"I've had a bit of practice."
"So I've heard," Peter replies. The next guy tries running at him and an idea pops into his head.
"Duck!" he yells at Calvin, hoping he'll get what he means. Luckily he does and he crouches into a small ball next to Peter, his hands covering his head. Just as the guy reaches Peter, he uses as much power as he can and jumps into the air, gaining at least three meters. The guy's legs crash straight into Calvin's back and he falls over, whacking his head onto the floor and knocking himself out. Peter lands back on the ground and gives Calvin a hand up.
"That was awesome," Calvin breathes, looking back and forth between Peter and the guy lying on the floor.
"Thanks," Peter replies, grinning underneath his mask. He goes to web up what he assumes to be the last of the attackers when his spider-sense goes off and he just manages to dive out of the way of a knife attack. The guy stumbles past him but regains his balance quickly and turns back for another go at him. Peter manages to dodge and block most of his swipes at him but one catches him on his head near his ear, ripping through his suit and cutting him. He yells in pain and staggers away. Man, that hurt. He's torn away from his own thoughts when he hears a yell from next to him. He quickly looks up and sees Calvin fighting off the knife-attacker.
He's cut up even worse than he was before but now the attacker appears to be hurt too. Peter moves behind him and grabs his arm, twisting it so that he drops the knife. He turns him around and punches him in the chest. He can hear the breath leave his lungs and knows that he won't recover from being winded like that for a good while. He takes a few steps back before collapsing on the floor wheezing. Peter lets out a deep sigh and tries to shake everything off. Ignoring the throbbing pain in the side of his head, he counts the number of bodies on the floor just to make sure there's no one he's missed.
"We got all five," Calvin says, slowly walking up to him.
"Yeah," Peter mutters, trying to recollect himself. He looks over at Calvin and sees that he's bleeding a lot more than Peter originally thought he was. "You should sit down, you're bleeding quite a lot."
"You can talk," Calvin says, pointing to Peter's head. "That guy with the knife got you pretty bad." Peter's hand instinctively goes up to the cut. He pulls it away to see that it's soaked in blood. Apparently, the cut is a lot deeper than he thought.
"Huh," he says, suddenly aware of how light-headed he feels. He needs to sort this injury out now otherwise it could get a lot worse, plus he doesn't need this on top of his other newly recovered injuries. He starts walking off to go around the corner and sort himself out but his legs suddenly give in and he collapses onto the floor.
"Shit!" he hears Calvin say and he runs up behind him, putting a hand on his back. "I think I should call an ambula-"
"No," Peter interrupts firmly. Having paramedics and ambulances would mean that his identity would almost certainly get revealed, especially with a head injury this bad. He tries to get up and make it two steps before he collapses again, this time into Calvin's arms.
"Dude, if you're not gonna let me call for help, you've at least gotta let me have a look," Calvin sighs, reaching to take off my mask. Peter squirms to get away but his body is too weak. He can feel his limbs going slightly numb and his vision becomes more and more blurry.
"No, don't," he mumbles, his words becoming more slurred as more blood leaves his body.
"I won't tell anyone who you are," Calvin says sincerely. "Hell, I'll probably have no idea who you are anyway." He gives another tug at the mask and Peter feels it starting to slip off his face.
"No," he whispers, giving Calvin one last pathetic push to try and get him off of him before a high-pitched ringing fills his ears and his vision goes completely black. The last thing he remembers is the feel of the cold, night air hitting his face, and Calvin whispering his name.
"Peter."
