Chapter 2

Eclipse: Newborns

It had been some time since Anastasia had heard trouble from the Cullen's.

Her interest in the strange coven was surprising, but she herself couldn't explain why. She believed they piqued her interest because of the human they harboured. The coven chose to protect the human, and it was quite fascinating.

Alec always told her humans were weak, nothing but walking blood bags for their superiors. Ana hadn't interacted properly with a human in decades, not including those who she fed off of. But she wouldn't consider that human contact.

Besides her inexperience around humans, Aro had sent her with who she called 'The Fantastic Four' to see over a potential threat in Seattle, Washington. Anastasia had jumped at the opportunity to leave the Volturi castle. She hadn't left the castle grounds in over 60 years. She was excited to return to the states.

"Fools," Anastasia stated boringly as she stared down at the lot filled with vampires. Newborns scattered below them, all feeding on random humans they had hunted.

"I don't understand why Aro had to send you. You're useless," Jane said to her. Ana scoffed.

"We both know that if I hadn't come, this quick trip would turn into a three month investigation. Besides, Aro would grow tired of waiting for his favorite foursome. He will also be curious as to why we haven't stopped the newborn army. Care to elaborate?" She asked as moved between Alec and Felix. She looked back down to the lot. Ana scrunched her noise in disgust as she saw how savagely the newborns acted. As if they had all the power in the world. She watched as a newborn sunk his teeth into a human and ripped its arm off. Anastasia's nose scrunched.

"Honestly, you think they'd have manners," she mumbled. She then turned to Jane.

"And what are we to do about this?"

"They've already drawn too much attention," Demetri commented.

"So has our inaction. Others will begin to question the Volturi's effectiveness," Felix growled. He clenched his fists.

"Let them," Jane said simply. Felix didn't like the answer and turned away.

"Maybe we should consult with Aro," he announced. Jane turned quickly on her heels. In a flash, Felix's back snapped backwards by the pain Jane inflicted on him.

"Aro's decisions are being watched. We must be the ones to decide," Jane said before stopping the torture she set on Felix. Ana gave a slight chuckle, one that mirrored Demetri's.

"Then decide sister. It's time," Alec said. His twin hummed in agreement.

"Yes it is."

"Either we let them do what they were created for, or we end them. Decisions, decisions," Jane drawled on as she continued to watch the newborns.

"It would be unwise to intervene, when Aro clearly hasn't given direct instructions to dispose of them either. He must have a plan for them," Anastasia said and for once Jane agreed with her.

"You're right. Let them cause chaos. It's not like they'll survive for long anyways," she hummed.

They all fell silent. After a few more moments of watching the lot, Anastasia turned away and huffed.

"I'm bored. We should go see a play!" She exclaimed and grabbed onto Alec's arm as they all walked away. He chuckled and looked at Jane.

"Sister, can we go see a play?"

"...Fine. But I get to chose which one we see."

Down in the abandoned lot, a boy by the name of Riley Piers glared at the army he had created. He stopped suddenly when he felt an uneasy presence. As he glanced to his left, he expected to see someone watching down on him.

But the top of the building was empty, and Riley Piers frowned as he turned back to his newborns.

And somewhere in Seattle, Anastasia was having the time of her life as she watched a late night play about two starcrossed lovers who were so stupid, they both died.

At least, that's how Demetri described it.

~

After some time doing random things at night, and Anastasia absolutely spazzing out when she discovered there was a play and movie called Anastasia, Jane announced they were to leave the same morning after visiting the Cullen's.

"The Cullen's live in Seattle?"

"No. They are in a small town not far from here. They call it Forks."

"Who would name a town after a utensil?"

Ana frowned as she tied her cloak over her dress. She smoothed it out before glancing at Demetri, who was watching her.

"Does this make me look fat?"

Demetri looked baffled.

"You haven't changed appearance since 1963, how in the world could you think you look fat?" He scoffed. Anastasia shrugged.

"It was an innocent question."

After leaving the hotel, and feeding off of some humans they found in an alley, the five began to walk to Forks. They followed the newborn scent and Ana frowned when she realized they weren't using their speed. Walking a bit faster, she joined Jane's side and voiced her curiosity.

"I want the army to fight. They have something against the Cullen's... Maybe they can manage to take a few of them down. Aro will be pleased if he knows a couple Cullen's died tragically and there was nothing we could do," Jane explained.

"How devious," Ana commented.

Not another word was said as they all walked through the thick forest. Anastasia was amazed by all the trees and the large space around her. No human could be heard for miles and it was truly something beautiful Ana didn't know she needed. She found a new respect for trees.

"We're not far now," Jane said. With those words said, they all took off, full speed, in seconds they arrived to their destination.

"They're coming!"

When Ana heard those words, she came to an abrupt stop. That was Alice.

The five walked into the battlefield gracefully. Anastasia could see a huge fire in the middle, and various newborns bodies already burning. She scrunched her nose. The Volturi stopped before the Cullen's and each removed their hood. Ana felt her red hair fall to her back. She had forgotten to tie it up. Jane would have a fit later about her looking unprofessional.

"Impressive. I've never seen a coven escape an assault of this magnitude and tact," Jane said plainly. Ana looked around the field before agreeing. It was impressive how the Cullen coven managed to defeat every newborn. Sure, the newborns weren't the smartest and always used brute over skill, but they were still large in numbers for the tiny coven of seven to take on.

"We were lucky," the leader of the coven, Carlisle, said softly.

"I doubt that," Jane responded.

"It appears we missed an entertaining fight," Alec commented.

"Yes. It's not often we're rendered our necessary."

"If you'd arrive half hour ago, you would've fulfilled your purpose," Edward snarked and Anastasia clicked her tongue. She hoped Edward would think before speaking like that to Jane again. The witch twin wasn't known for being merciful.

"Pity," the blonde hissed. Alec and Ana could see Jane about to snap at any given moment. But her sharp eyes smoothed over as she trailed off to  behind the Cullen's, where a small girl cowered, clearly frightened by everything going on around her.

"You missed one."

At Jane's words, the newborn realized they were talking about her and took a couple steps back, panting hard. One of the Cullen's made path to stand next to her, standing tall.

"We offered her asylum in exchange for her surrender," Carlisle explained.

"That wasn't yours to offer," Jane said strongly. She then turned to the newborn with vicious eyes.

"Why did you come?" Jane asked loudly. Without even giving the newborn a chance to answer, Jane let her powers attack the young girl. Anastasia flinched as the screams of the newborn were strong. She had to look away.

"Who created you?" Jane asked again, increasing the torture even more.

"Jane, I believe that is enough," Anastasia said firmly, not being able to bare the girls screeches anymore. But Jane didn't listen as she concentrated on all her power.

"You don't need to do that, she'll tell you anything you want to know," one of the Cullen females pleaded. Jane smirked slightly and stopped.

"I know."

"I, I don't know! Riley wouldn't tell us! He said our thoughts weren't safe!" The newborn cried.

"Her name was Victoria. Perhaps you knew her," Edward said. It was clear to Anastasia that Edward already knew the Volturi had lacked interfering, and that, of course, Jane knew of Victoria.

But the Volturi would never admit to that.

"Edward, if the Volturi had knowledge of Victoria they would've stopped her. Isn't that right, Jane?" Carlisle said, trying to ease the tension between Edward and Jane.

"Of course. Felix?" Jane said to the vampire besides her. It was obvious what Felix was about to do.

"Jane please, maybe we can spare her life. She is young and clearly has no foul intentions," Anastasia whispered to Jane, even though everyone could hear. Jane shook her head, already denying Ana.

"She didn't know what she was doing!" The same vampire who had defended the newborn exclaimed again. Jane stopped Felix.

"We'll take full responsibility for her," she continued.

"Give her a chance."

Jane scoffed softly.

"The Volturi don't give second chances. Keep that in mind. Caius will be interested to know that she is still human," Jane said, now turning her attention towards the only human in the area.

"The date is set," Bella spoke up. Anastasia clicked her tongue again. She had hoped Bella would have been a vampire by the time the battle happened. She had hoped Bella and Edward had taken her words of advice to heart. She was disappointed they hadn't listened.

Jane looked peeved when she heard they had a date set but didn't say more on the topic.

"Take care of that Felix. I'd like to go home," Jane commanded. Ana shook her head and once again tried to negotiate with the twin.

"Jane... Show mercy to her? She has done nothing wrong. Look at her; she's so scared, its pathetic," Ana said quietly trying to get her to change her mind. Jane narrowed her eyes at Anastasia but said nothing. Her words went unheard and were gone with the wind as Felix moved past the Cullen's towards the newborn.

Anastasia looked away as the newborn gave her final scream, and the loud cracking of marble was heard before a dreaded silence.

Jane smiled with pleasure.

Without a word, the Volturi turned around and sped towards the forest line. Anastasia was the last one, but she stopped and turned around.

"I advise once again to push Bella's date up. Caius isn't very fond of humans. He will take drastic measures if you do not move to keep your promise," Ana warned. Edward nodded in appreciation.

"Thank you, Anastasia," Carlisle said in his usual soothing voice. Ana bowed her head once.

"Ana, won't you consider staying with us?" Alice suddenly asked. Most of the coven's members turned to look at her with surprised expressions. All except Edward, who knew exactly why Alice wanted Anastasia to stay.

The redhead smiled before shaking her head.

"The Volturi are good at tracking down their prey. Remember that as well."

She managed to glance at the boy in the far end, the one who had moved towards the newborn. She smiled at him before looking at the coven.

"Smells like dog around here, doesn't it?"

And Anastasia ran out of there lighting fast, vowing to herself never to reveal who had actually helped the Cullen's win the miraculous battle.

And she also ignored the painful heart-tugging call of her mate as she ran back to Volterra.

She hoped to see the Cullen family again.
