CHAPTER TWO: TEXTBOOKS

STILES watched Ellie from his seat, there were things about her he wanted to know, things that he knew she'd never tell him, and all at the same time, he wanted to put as much distance between them as possible.

They were friends, and for him, that was all he needed.

But as per usual, he knew he would mess things up, he would say something stupid or bring something up that Ellie wouldn't like. Luckily for him, he had Scott to keep him in check. Coach rapped his knuckles against the edge of his desk, "STILINSKI!" he yelled his voice echoing out over the mostly silent classroom, his head jerked from where he'd set it in the palm of his hand.

"Hmm?"

Coach scowled at him from where he sat, "stop daydreaming and pay attention." he grumbled resuming his story moments later. Stiles gave a soft nod and leaned his head into his palm once more, he could care less about Coach and his stories, but if he was going to be forced to direct his attention from his frivolous daydreams, he was going to direct it towards Ellie.

Which also happened to be the main concept of his daydreams.

"STILINSKI!" Coach screamed his voice sending the classroom so quiet that Stiles was almost sure everyone in the room could hear his heart knocking against his chest, "stay after class."

"We need to talk." he hissed leaning back against his desk. Letting out a sigh, the teen nodded his head and focused his attention on Coach as he'd been previously been directed to.

Both Ellie and Scott cast their friend a look from over their shoulders before turning to face the coach again, they could regroup at lunch and ask the tired boy what the man had said to him, until then, it was best that they paid attention to coach to avoid receiving the same fate as their friend.

It wasn't until the bell rang and the students were shocked out of their daze by the loud noise that it finally sunk in that the two teens would be leaving the brunette boy alone... with coach.

Meaning he was more than likely to use some choice words.

Ellie let out a sigh as she slipped out of her seat and pulled the straps of her bag taut against her small shoulders, following out of the room after Scott she cast Stiles a final look before rounding the corner and disappearing from his line of vision.

Stiles let out a sigh, he hated being singled out, but, it wasn't like there was anything he could do about it, leaning back in his seat just the slightest, he watched as coach approached his desk- sitting on the surface of the one beside him- before reaching his hand up to rub at his jaw.

"You know Stilinski, I don't think I've ever seen someone get as distracted as you do... besides McCall with Allison." he let his hand drop his gaze set on the brunette teen before him.

"My advice, forget about Simmons, you've got bigger fish to fry, like our upcoming game." Stiles shrugged his shoulders, "I really like her Coach, you gotta know what that feels like, right?"

The man didn't respond for several moments, and when he did, he stared down at the floor, "I did, a while back, and you wanna know how it ended?" he lifted his head to wait for Stiles' response before watching the boy shake his head, "it ended in heartbreak, so again, forget about Simmons, you hear me Stilinski?"

Softly nodding his head, Stiles waited till coach had returned to his desk to grab his bag and make way for the exit.

Meanwhile, both Scott and Ellie had found themselves with their lunch trays at their semi-deserted lunch table, god, it felt odd for it to be so empty.

Usually, they had a few other people with them- including Stiles- but it seemed that nobody wanted to be around them, Allison and Lydia were sitting a few tables away with Isaac and a few other people that had clustered around the small trio.

Ellie couldn't help but scowl, no matter how much she tried, she couldn't find it in herself to try and like Lyda, not even for Stiles. Most times she found herself slipping away from the group whenever they began to talk about the redhead, she didn't have anything against her, but, there was just something about her, something off-putting.

Gently jabbing at the dry spaghetti noodles on her tray, Ellie found herself shoveling the odd things into her mouth, it was so much easier than talking, and she knew that Scott was too lost in thought over Allison to even try and begin a conversation.

So they sat in silence until Stiles arrived.

But it seemed that even Stiles didn't want to talk as he picked at his pale spaghetti, Ellie held back a sigh, why couldn't the day be more interesting in a way they all liked?

The three didn't talk for a few moments, Scott even going as far as pulling his textbook out to study it, which left both Ellie and Stiles far more shocked than they would admit.

"So..." Ellie began slowly looking up from her tray, "what did coach say?"

Stiles froze, how was he supposed to tell her without exposing his little secret? If he did that he could see their little circle falling apart faster than Scott's grades in sophomore year.

"Um... nothing really, he just told me to stop dozing off or I'd be benched for the upcoming game." he watched as both of his friends nodded their heads, he had feared they would see through his half-lie, and Scott more than likely had, but if he didn't bring it up then it didn't matter.

Still too bored to talk, the three sat in silence- Scott flipping through his textbook- until the bell rang, and then they had English.

God, Ellie really hated the class, the curriculum, the projects, it all made zero sense to her.

What was the point of the class if it taught her nothing of value that she could use in the real world?

She couldn't help but wonder how things would carry out in the classroom, among their classmates were several people they all knew, Lydia Martin, Allison Argent, and the twins.

It wasn't until they actually sat down in their chosen seats and the class started that they began to sense how things would fall into place. Their teacher- a complete ass- had decided that rather than allowing the students to pick where they would like to sit for the school year, he was going to move them as he saw fit.

And boy, did they definitely hate the new arrangement, Scott was placed between the twins, Stiles behind Lydia, and Ellie behind Allison. Could things get any worse for the three?

She probably should've avoided asking herself the question, especially when she knew what high school was like, so when the teacher announced they would have a project to work on, none of them could be bothered to care, they had far more important things on their minds.

Such as, what they were going to do about the Alpha pack, it was only a matter of time before they moved in on the smaller pack and it seemed obvious that the clock was ticking by, every second they wasted in school was another that could've been spent on fixing their current issue.

It seemed more than likely that they'd be ripped to shreds within days.

Ellie gazed upon the dark hair resting on Allison's shoulders, she wondered why Scott hadn't attempted to talk to her, lord knew she had more than enough time to entertain his conversation.

But that was between them, not Ellie.

Besides, she had bigger fish to fry.

Like Isaac, the boy had been "borrowing" her textbooks without permission and not returning them, and she wanted them back, not to mention needed, she had a physics test coming up, and if she failed she was going to murder the teenager.

She shook her head raising her gaze to rest on the teacher as he spoke, he was explaining the details of the project and how he planned to partner them up, so when he said they weren't allowed to choose their own partners it didn't come as much of a surprise.

Ellie refrained from rolling her eyes, hopefully, she didn't get stuck with either of the twins, anyone but them.

Most of them leaned forward as the teacher read out their names most crossing their fingers under their desks in hope of getting someone they knew or were friends with.

Well, it seemed Stiles was having better luck than her, he'd been assigned to work with Lydia.

And Ellie?

Allison.

Which was alright, she knew the girl, she'd even once been friends with her, until she'd split from Scott, she'd been forced to choose between friends, so, she choose the person she'd known longer.

Scott.

The girl couldn't help but raise an eyebrow when she heard Scott's name being called out with Ethans, surely they wouldn't murder each other on school grounds, right?

For all their sakes, she hoped both boys showed some restraint and avoided getting physical in front of so many people, the last thing they needed was more trouble biting at their ankles.

It seemed they were already knee-deep up shits creek, any further and they'd surely drown.

"So, I think I've made it clear that you are not to switch partners, the project is due in about two weeks, I expect everyone to be done by then."

Waddling over to his desk, the class watched on in silence as he plopped down in his chair and let his eyes flutter shut, a few people whispered among the others questioned what he was doing and what they were supposed to be doing.

Honestly, no one knew.

The majority of the teenagers turned to the people beside them and began to quietly talk. Ellie leaned her head into her hand, she could do the same if Scott and Stiles weren't as far away as they were, it almost seemed as if they were a part of an entirely different class.

Her next class was supposed to be gym, sadly. And she knew exactly what waited for her, laps, and lots of them.

It wasn't until the end of the day that she'd finally see the boys again, and catch Isaac sorting through her locker.

She couldn't help but grab a pen from her bag and begin chasing after him as he toted her History book in his long arms, both Stiles and Scott watched with questioning looks as she rounded the corner still hot in her pursuit against the dirty blonde teenager.

Neither bothered to move, instead waiting for their friend to return.

Which only took her a few minutes.

She looked about as tired as one could be after chasing the boy, her textbook in her arms as she approached the boys, "he's a lot stronger than he looks."

Raising a brow, Stiles gestured to her right hand, "where's your pen?" Ellie sucked in a breath, "I may or may not have jabbed Isaac with it to get the book back."

The boy couldn't help but smile, "nice, now, let's get going, I wanna watch Star Wars, and none of this stupid werewolf stuff is going to stop me."

Scott lightly chuckled, he highly doubted that, Stiles was about as loyal as a dog, he could be trusted and Scott knew more than anyone that if needed the boy would come running at the mention of his name.

He was a good friend.

And they all admired that.

Although sometimes they did regret asking for his help so often, he had a life too, as small as it may have seemed to others, and they wanted him to be able to live it without always being stuck around them.

He deserved to have fun and be able to enjoy himself, although they both knew he enjoyed Star Wars, so they'd try their best to avoid bothering him for the night.
